Enlightened Listening for June 4

After a week off, we return to our new music playlist in a big way. This week's edition of Enlightened Listening features fifteen releases, largely in the funky sphere, but gets further driving and dark the deeper it goes. If there is one theme, it is the guitar (bass and otherwise). The oft underused instrument plays a varied role in several of this week's standout tracks, including particularly enjoyable iterations from ARTY, Myd and Lamorn. The latter mau5trap release, along with singles from Gaspard Augé and Rampa, and minds&machines' "Resurrected" make up my favourite four tracks of the week. The final third of the playlist, which holds all of the longer releases, features the second sensational EP from Hyunji-A in as many weeks, the deadly good debut EP from Afterlife & Tale Of Us founder Anyma, and another epic delivery from Drumstone, who continue to amaze at every turn. Throwback Thursday: SBTRKT ft. Little Dragon - Wildfire (Objekt Remix)

Over the past weeks Tiga has been posting his old episodes of My Name Is Tiga as aired on BBC Radio Six. A foundational show for me thanks to Tiga's inimitable wit and incredible track selections, I've been slowly going through each episode injecting myself with nostalgia and a lot of laughs. As a result I've found myself downloading a bunch of that throwback brilliance and while there's a ton of incredible stuff I could gush about, I've decided that for this Throwback Thursday post I'd focus on the incendiary excellence of Objekt's remix of SBTRKT's Little Dragon aided track "Wildfire." Unfortunately there are no full versions available for streaming so we'll have to focus on the shortened Soundcloud upload below, however the power and brilliance of TJ Hertz's tough techno take is unmissable.

A raucous and ruthless future is the deliriously awesome spin Objekt has offered in this new vision. The percussive power is epic, enough to rattle walls with a small subwoofer, just as the snare is sure to shatter bones. Adding the synths to the mix is quite simply cataclysmic. That said, "Wildfire" does not suffer from sheer weight or unwieldy gravity - it is no black hole. Rather, Objekt succeeds in pitting Yukimi Nagano's heavenly vocals against the unholy backdrop by brilliantly incorporating her at the most opportune times as though sprinkling her in like fairy dust. In fact, Objekt is able to retain much of the captivating quality of the original track, while re-contextualizing it into a techno titan - just as Tiga notes in his remix special with Gesaffelstein's remix of Lana Del Rey. Lane 8 - Halloween 2019 Mixtape

This Never Happened head, Lane 8 is at it again. Known for his quarterly, season-based mixtapes, he has just broken the mold by following his "Fall 2019 Mixtape" with a haunting Halloween edition. Stretching well over two hours, this mix strays a bit from the standard fare of seductive deep and provocative progressive house to allow for more spine-tingling techno and blood-curdling bass.

As always Lane 8's track selection reigns supreme. There's the usual onslaught of IDs, mixed in with some classic cuts from Justice, Gesffelstein and even The Bloody Beetroots' smash "Warp 1.9." And while those old cuts still hold power, it's the new and unknown tracks that do the most damage as you have no idea what evil awaits. Prior to "Let There Be Light," we're welcomed by a creepy choir of sorts. Later we're embroiled in a shadowy chase scene as wolves and all manner of malevolent monsters howl and yelp in the distance. Even deeper into the mix, the astral imagery becomes increasing alien, beaming us aboard a spaceship helmed by freakishly, grotesque creatures.

The whole of the mix is a heart-palpitating journey through sound, endlessly filling you with helplessness as you attempt to navigate the vile vision of Lane 8's crafting. Especially thanks to the largely voiceless nature of the mix, it is nearly impossible to rein in your imagination. Enlightened Listening for October 4

Three weeks ago I thought I was on the precipice of returning to regular blogging and a new season of Bump In The Hump. However that weekend I spilled on my laptop, and while I'm writing to you from said computer, it is no longer on my lap as I am forced use an external keyboard and mouse while I continue to wait for the replacement part to arrive. That said mountains of music continue to be released, and while I spent most of my week wading through the weeks I missed, I've decided to focus on this Friday's releases via a new edition of Enlightened Listening. Listen below and find a brief blow by blow in the next paragraph.

As always, I like to open with cool cuts and that's what we get with the latest from Goldroom. His dreamy delight leads us into funky fun and eventually acid in Justin Jay's Future Feels EP. Following  that comes a killer four track EP from Oliver Koletzki who offers up awesome, expansive grooves rife with wild sound and a plenitude of percussion. The legendary Eric Prydz then follows with his epic 13-track PRYDA 15 VOL III album, which is of course killer quality, through and through. Turning towards bass house, there's four banging EPs back to back from trusted names like Jack Beats, NuKid, Destructo and CONFESSION. Closing out that ridiculous run is a track BLANSH had sent me in January, and while I've always been a fan of his work, I can honestly say "Way Up" is my favourite. And speaking of favourites, Gesaffelstein is back again and much closer to my favourite Gesaffelstein in the diabolically dark, shiver inducing power punch that we got from 2010-2013. Following the incredible power of NOVO SONIC SYSTEM comes Datassette's Kestrel Manoeuvers In The Dark, a brilliant mind-bending display of synth work. Finally we close with a 15-track deadmau5 remix package featuring the likes of Morgan Page, Pig&Dan, Spencer Brown and a whole host more. Enjoy!

Enlightened Listening for March 8

We've got an extra funky Friday full of releases for this week's edition of Enlightened Listening. There's a couple cool albums of the groovier house variety, opposed by the despair driven darkness of Gesaffelstein's first album in over five years. There's also excellent EPs from Jon Gurd and Joe Goddard, as well as some sick singles from Don Rimini and Juelz, plus a couple sublime remixes from Folamour and Joris Voorn. Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs - Energy Fantasy (Folamour Remix)
Fantastic opening track. The drum work dazzles beneath bright and beautiful, soaring synths.

Birdee - Then Came The Sun
There are no holes in this album. Full on funky fun with awesome vocal driven and instrumental tracks alike. Big bold beats like "Love" and "Rumours" and more spacious, slow-burning sensations like "Meant To Be" and "Don't Give Up Your Love."

Locked Groove - Sunset Service
A lot like Birdee above, the funk is strong with this one; however, the energy is kicked up a notch, as immediately noted in "Pudding." Verging on classic rave vibes, there's no shortage of dance energy at the core of these tracks. They can be dark and dirty like "Zillion" or bright and ethereal like "Out Of Orbit."

Yotto - Walls (Joris Voorn Remix)
The typical top notch brilliance of Voorn is on full display here. As always, the extended offering allows the ease of "Walls" to breathe its beauty into your soul.

Jon Gurd - After It All
Like Folamour above, the drum work throughout this EP lays a fantastic foundation for the swirling synths to dance around. While it opens skyward in its projection, After It All gets deeper as it progresses.

Joe Goddard - Pull The Plug
My most anticipated release of the year so far. Each track is exceptionally designed, delivering some seriously sick grooves. "Sacred Heart" is both hypnotic and brilliantly bumping. "Max De Fool" builds on this hypnotism, turning further towards techno before Kool Keith cuts the chord with a wild get-down and fulsome flow on the title track. Finally, the fire inducing, furious drum opening of "Broken" will have you on your ass when the beat finally drops. Unreal.

Don Rimini - Homeboy
Bleepy shuffling brilliance. Not an all time stunner, but a surefire party starter.

Gesaffelstein - Hyperion
Expectations are dangerous. Expecting an artist to craft the same kind of tracks they did nearly a decade ago is foolhardy. No, this is not Variations, Conspiracy or even Aleph, but yes, it is still Gesaffelstein. His genius is still there; just like any of us, he's changed/evolved/grown over the years. Admittedly, I was not big on any of the singles, especially after the first few listens, however they've grown on me and now I'm quite the fan of both of the features. Of course I'm here for HAIM, and The Hacker/Electric Youth collab is incredibly intriguing, but the three track finale is perhaps the best bit of this whole endeavor. It's a bit soundtrack-ish, but hey, he's always had those proclivities and if you're not a fan of quality soundtrack stuff like John Williams, Wendy Carlos, Alan Menken and others, you're kind of missing the point...

Juelz - Closure (ft. Ruby Chase)
Finally, Juelz gives us our first taste of his Shanghai Nights EP, due out May 3rd on Fool's Gold. His club capabilities are on full display as he blends trap and future bass better than I've hear in a while.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Gesaffelstein - Viol (Brodinski Remix)

With Brodinski taking over CODA Saturday (RSVP/Tickets), I knew I had to find something to fit into this week's episode of Bump In The Hump. Then of course I realized his remix of Gesaffelstein's "Viol" came to us through Tiga's Turbo Recordings. So set your speakers to stun and press play below.Not only is Brodinski set to bring the beats to CODA, he'll be joined by RYME whose label BADLQQK has a new release slated for Friday, and you'll get your first listen on Bump In The Hump tonight. They'll be joined by the likes of new Rezz, Keys N Krates, Zeds Dead among several other big names. There's truly a mix of everything from disco and funk through to future bass, trap, DnB, techno and dub. The Wild Now - Tongue Tied (Far & Few Remix)

I've covered Texas duo Far & Few several times, most recently with their potent collab with Blvk Sheep "Pop." Their range of bass tracks, primarily through the trap lens, shows off incredible production quality, a knack for nasty drops and an incredible versatility around vocals. The latter ability leads their two most recent, more vibey, productions "iwantuu" with ye. and "Ghosted," a take on on Sevdaliza and Stwo's "Haunted." But today the duo is back with a brooding banger, steeped in scowling synths and vicious, yet vaporous vocals.

The atmosphere of "Tongue Tied" is unmistakably menacing, grinding with the intensity of Rezz or Gesaffelstein, while still offering up crystalline clarity in the few haunting high-end notes. As always their percussion is on point, rolling the track forward with a playful progression that makes moving to the macabre joint easy. All this said, the quality of the vocal chops and their interplay in the drops is what makes "Tongue Tied" such a tremendous track. Frustra on Bump In The Hump: August 24

If you've been following Bump In The Hump in the last few weeks, you'll be aware of the hiatus, friend of the show, Frustra has put himself in. He's assured me this is only a temporary move, as he continues to grow and work on his sound and style. And although he's still released music during said hiatus (see his remix of Katy B & Chris Lorenzo "I Wanna Be") it seems the turning point is now in sight.

In less than three weeks time, August 24th to be exact, I'll be playing host to the last track from Frustra as we know him, as well as speaking to him about what the future holds for the talented young producer. This afternoon, he released a teaser on his soundcloud, which one can only assume provides some insight into his new direction. Cryptically titled, "VIIIXXIVMMXVI" features deep, dark bass vibes reminiscent of Gesaffelstein and Rezz, amidst militarily precise percussion and affected, ominous vocals. Tagged "bodywave" and "vaporfunk," the feels from this teaser are sure to send shivers down your spine. Frustra's official comment is, much like Big Brother, to "expect the unexpected." Throwback Thursday: Gesaffelstein - Variations

For this installment of my Throwback Thursday series, it is my pleasure to reintroduce the world to one of the most influential, genre destroying, face melting, wall of sound, crunchiest, warbling, synth slaying, powerful popping percussion, insanity inducing, "Variations," from French revolutionary, Gesaffelstein.

I can still remember the first time I heard the track, I was scrolling through the, now defunct, Erol Alkan forum, specifically an endless thread labelled something to the tune of "show off your hottest new tracks" and everyone seemed to be going on about this guy with a weird, unpronounceable name and some track called "Variations." Upon first listen, I was blown away, it was like nothing I'd ever heard before, so in your face and intense; seriously ear popping. The at once, subtle yet jarring progressions throughout, move the track in such a powerful way, and are only the first pieces of the genius that is Gesaffelstein's production.

There is no questioning the beyond brilliant production value on each of the sounds, that come and go at seemingly random intervals, but this is the beauty, Gesaffelstein, who is knowingly setting us up for what's ahead. The transitional effects (at 1:13, 2:03, 3:56, 4:29, etc) act as though they are the beat/melody devolving but it's really his sneaky way of adding movement and setting us up for what can be seen as a drop, changing the sounds and samples. Those sounds, as mentioned above, are clearly chosen and produced with care, in an effort to create the most impact. There's no doubt that he achieves this feat with flying colours.

"Variations" is full of attitude and intensity, and lays a foundation for his future productions, "Control Movement," "Viol," and "Hatred," (among countless others) and paved a path for other producers such as Rezz and Drezo, even becoming so popular that Kanye West had Gesaffelstein produce some of the tracks on Yeezus. Gesaffelstein will always hold a spot in my heart, as I'll always remember literally laughing all the way home to my New Years Eve party, after dropping my family off at the airport, listening to the full Variations EP, as well as seeing him DJ alongside Brodinski at Wrongbar, chanting "Mehdi, Mehdi, Mehdi," when they dropped Carte Blanche's "Gare Du Nord."

Hero's Long Lost Minimix

Yesterday afternoon, Calgary's own, Hero dropped a self described random "18 minute electro mix [from] a while ago." Turns out that "while" was a few years, but in the same vein as A-Trak's Bloghaus Revival mix, it's filled with tracks that stand the test of time and still sound as fresh as ever.

Hero treats us to an excellently mixed compilation of tracks from the likes of Pilotpriest, Gesaffelstein, Sebastien Leger, Cassius, dcup, Siriusmo, and some Uffie, of course. Despite his claim that the mix is random, it actually flows really well and brilliantly showcases Hero's true artistry, in which he literally does everything: production, writing, mixing, vocals and art. The back and forth mixing between tracks in the early sections is tight, well thought out and adds some serious oomph. I've always liked mixes for the unparalleled amount of creativity they allow an artist to take advantage of and room for story telling, and there's no doubt that Hero puts this to good use. Alternatively, original productions and single tracks leave less room for such drawn out storytelling, making them more compressed and lean more heavily on vocals to tell the story, see for example his latest original, "Crutch," below.

Monday Mashed Up Mix #2

Each Monday I post a little mix of less than 30 minutes for your listening pleasure. It contains a variety of electronic music mixed and mashed up to varying degrees. The music is always first and foremost while DJing and mixing skills are meant to take a back seat. It includes some brand new stuff but also some forgotten gems and whatever it was that had entered my consciousness. #NoNeon w/ Hunter Siegel, Ghastly & Dr. Fresch (Review)

Last night Hunter Siegel, and his final #NoNeon party of the year, shook the Hoxton to it's core and nearly brought it to its knees. I've never seen the Hoxton so busy so early, there was a massive line from as early as 11 and by the time I got in at 11:30 the club was already packed back to the door. I'm glad I arrived early because I'm sure the line was never better than the half hour I waited, and to my surprise Hunter took the stage right at midnight. Which apparently he does most of the time (although not at the last #NoNeon).

Regardless what time he went on you had to know, Emperor Palpatine, the Lord of DarkPLUR was going to deliver. Yesterday I speculated that there might be some B2B action, a live performance from Delaney Jane, or some new Hunter Siegel productions. Well, I was about half right, there was no B2B, and neither did Delaney Jane sing live, but she was there side by side with Hunter when he dropped "Still Waiting," as was Autoerotique who joined Hunter onstage when he dropped LYAOF. Best of all Hunter premiered his new collab with Autoerotique, video of which you can watch below.

Early Influences Mix - Now Downloadable

This past Sunday I released a playlist I had kicking around my iTunes for nearly three years, in the form of a two hour mix. The "Early Influences Mix" is just that, it is a collage of some of my earliest loves from the world of EDM, created to imitate my favourite radio program and greatest influence BBC Radio 1's "Essential Mix." It ranges in styles from DNB, House, Tech-House, Dubstep, Trance, Bass and downright beautiful melodic tracks such as my favourite at the time, Erol Alkan's rework of Forever Dolphin Love.

This mix is the conflagration of all that influenced me into becoming more involved in the EDM world, and eventually pushed me into joining CFBU and becoming a radio DJ. I most certainly have changed immensely since this time as I would no longer be comfortable playing any Alesso track. The times have shown that he is not deserving of my respect (at least at the level of DJing, see his "faked" live sets). Nor would I feel comfortable playing many of Skrillex's tracks; although I do respect a certain number of his tracks, I find that because of his now worldwide success and fame, his productions have taken a downturn and people are too enamoured to think critically towards him. Apart from these few exceptions of artists I can no longer support, the rest of the artists, specifically Boy 8-Bit, Boys Noize, Erol Alkan, Gesaffelstein, Clouds, Tiga & ZZT, Alex Metric and the now sadly defunct Carte Blanche, I still continue to love and have immense respect for their productions and artistry.

Unfortunately or not I decided to stick with the original form of the playlist I created so long ago (which at the time I felt to be my "best of" or "Essential Mix") which resulted in perhaps some unfavourable transitions, and playing out of some tracks in their entirety for mere ease of mixing. I justified this quality of mixing through something that resonated with me that Alex Metric said in his essential mix in 2011 that it is music first, an "anything goes ethos...no genres, just good music." This is not to say that Alex's mix had poor transitions, as it is entirely the opposite, the emphasis ought to be on the artistry of the tracks and not myself, although I am showcasing myself through the tracks I chose. One such artist I could compare the transitions and mixing style to is that of Deadmau5 as he is no DJ, he is all producer; I do not think this is a slight towards the mau5, he too agrees that his role is that of producer and does not care for DJing. My thoughts are if Joel can get away with it I don't see why I cannot.

Regardless, this is truly my first attempt (from long ago) at creating an essential style mix and I intend to do more in the future as I am beginning to miss my weekly platform and the pile of new and great music continues to grow. The only oddity/special this week is a tribute to fathers the world round, and their paternal influence; with a mystery late 70s track from local Toronto talents that can only be found on vinyl. Oggie will be looking at current events both here on the Niagara Peninsula and across the pond with a tribute to tonight's BBC Radio Uno essential mix special live from the Sonar festival in Barcelona, Spain. Therefore the tracklist includes both Brodinski & Gesaffelstein, Niall and Beni of Jack Beats, Benny Benassi, and the obligatory Fake Blood, Boy 8-Bit, and Montreal natives A-Trak and Tiga as ZZT.
