Enlightened Listening for May 7

It's the first Friday of the month, and that means we're once again moving our weekly new music playlist, Enlightened Listening, to Bandcamp. As with last month's Bandcamp Friday, I've put the playlist on BNDCMPR here to streamline your listening experience. Again, I've opted to keep the releases in alphabetical order by artist name as this incredibly diverse compilation is nearly impossible to mix smoothly.

The nine-release, sixty-nine track (at the moment) compilation opens with a pre-order of A. G. Cook's massive LP. While there are forthcoming remixes from Boys Noize, GRRL and Baauer, it already features the likes of umru, Kai Whiston and DJ Warlord. Following that is the live recording of Austra's solo acoustic performance of HiRUNDiN. Rounding out the first three releases is Boys Noize's Defected follow-up to "Mvinline."

The middle third of this week's Enlightened Listening features a trio of raucous releases, starting with six slappers from Brodinski & Modulaw. Even wilder, Chippy Nonstop and dj genderfluid's self-titled LP gets cheeky with all kinds of rave energy. Headed further hardcore and break-driven, India Jordan's Watch Out! is simply wicked.

Finally, we head into the final three releases with the IDM journey through sound and consciousness that is Little Snake's lengthy titled LP, A Fragmented Love Story, Written By The Infinite Helix Architect. Another release that's likely to leave you doing double-takes is LUXXURY's Edits Vol. 7, which features a couple handfuls of fabulous disco, synthpop edits of classics from The Rolling Stones, Black Box, Alexander Robotnik and more. Finally, our lone freebie, a treat for Diablo II fans in Priori's DnB twist on the "Tristram Theme."

Find each release linked individually below, note ^ for pre-order and * for free download, and stream the full playlist via BNDCMPR here.

Enlightened Listening for August 28

Spanning 85 tracks and running more than five hours, this week's Enlightened Listening is absolutely massive. So much so that I dare not tackle a write-up it as I'll be here until tomorrow. Instead I've worked hard to curate the playlist for maximum flow, in the hopes that it can be enjoyed with ease. Don't like something? Skip ahead a bit. There's so much great stuff: banging, groovy and otherwise. As always find each individual release linked at the bottom. Dig in below and have a great weekend!

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Gesaffelstein - Viol (Brodinski Remix)

With Brodinski taking over CODA Saturday (RSVP/Tickets), I knew I had to find something to fit into this week's episode of Bump In The Hump. Then of course I realized his remix of Gesaffelstein's "Viol" came to us through Tiga's Turbo Recordings. So set your speakers to stun and press play below. Not only is Brodinski set to bring the beats to CODA, he'll be joined by RYME whose label BADLQQK has a new release slated for Friday, and you'll get your first listen on Bump In The Hump tonight. They'll be joined by the likes of new Rezz, Keys N Krates, Zeds Dead among several other big names. There's truly a mix of everything from disco and funk through to future bass, trap, DnB, techno and dub. Don't miss a minute, live from 7-9 PM EDT via Radio Humber or after the fact via Mixcloud here.

Sister City - Blood Mind

Ahead of it's release this coming Friday (Jan 22), Bromance Records have released another single from their upcoming Homieland Vol.2 compilation album. Sister City's "Blood Mind."

The Brodinski fronted label, is known for it's eclectic techno, club-centric and bass heavy releases from the likes of LOUISAHHH!!!, Sam Tiba and Panteros666, but this marks the first release under the Bromance label for Sister City. "Blood Mind" isn't your typical techno delivery, rather it's quite the subtle, slow burner. Each technological sound and sample is so delicately added and subtracted so as to not take away from the overall project. The additional vocal flourishes are the only organic sounds, whereas the rest of the track is an entirely mechanical production; an assembly line of awesomeness. Perhaps my favourite part of the track is the interplay between the various elements with rapid transitions, negating the need for a banger-esque drop; it's artificial intelligence has surpassed such a mortal requirement. Pre-order the album now, and tracks from GENER8ION, Myd, Canblaster, Tommy Kruise and more (24 tracks in total) in your iTunes as the calendar flips to the 22nd.

Throwback Thursday: Gesaffelstein - Variations

For this installment of my Throwback Thursday series, it is my pleasure to reintroduce the world to one of the most influential, genre destroying, face melting, wall of sound, crunchiest, warbling, synth slaying, powerful popping percussion, insanity inducing, "Variations," from French revolutionary, Gesaffelstein.
I can still remember the first time I heard the track, I was scrolling through the, now defunct, Erol Alkan forum, specifically an endless thread labelled something to the tune of "show off your hottest new tracks" and everyone seemed to be going on about this guy with a weird, unpronounceable name and some track called "Variations." Upon first listen, I was blown away, it was like nothing I'd ever heard before, so in your face and intense; seriously ear popping. The at once, subtle yet jarring progressions throughout, move the track in such a powerful way, and are only the first pieces of the genius that is Gesaffelstein's production.

There is no questioning the beyond brilliant production value on each of the sounds, that come and go at seemingly random intervals, but this is the beauty, Gesaffelstein, who is knowingly setting us up for what's ahead. The transitional effects (at 1:13, 2:03, 3:56, 4:29, etc) act as though they are the beat/melody devolving but it's really his sneaky way of adding movement and setting us up for what can be seen as a drop, changing the sounds and samples. Those sounds, as mentioned above, are clearly chosen and produced with care, in an effort to create the most impact. There's no doubt that he achieves this feat with flying colours.

"Variations" is full of attitude and intensity, and lays a foundation for his future productions, "Control Movement," "Viol," and "Hatred," (among countless others) and paved a path for other producers such as Rezz and Drezo, even becoming so popular that Kanye West had Gesaffelstein produce some of the tracks on Yeezus. Gesaffelstein will always hold a spot in my heart, as I'll always remember literally laughing all the way home to my New Years Eve party, after dropping my family off at the airport, listening to the full Variations EP, as well as seeing him DJ alongside Brodinski at Wrongbar, chanting "Mehdi, Mehdi, Mehdi," when they dropped Carte Blanche's "Gare Du Nord."

Tune in live this evening when Oggie brings you back to the world of electronic music. The only oddity/special this week is a tribute to fathers the world round, and their paternal influence; with a mystery late 70s track from local Toronto talents that can only be found on vinyl. Oggie will be looking at current events both here on the Niagara Peninsula and across the pond with a tribute to tonight's BBC Radio Uno essential mix special live from the Sonar festival in Barcelona, Spain. Therefore the tracklist includes both Brodinski & Gesaffelstein, Niall and Beni of Jack Beats, Benny Benassi, and the obligatory Fake Blood, Boy 8-Bit, and Montreal natives A-Trak and Tiga as ZZT. Stay tuned to this page for the tracklist, which will be posted here at 6 PM.

EFYE April 27/12

This week Oggie James brings the heat with a summer feel. Sebastien Leger always sports a warm bouncy feel, Boy 8-Bit's Tropical Heat continues with the almost jungle feel, where we dive right into the much anticipated and hyped track from Major Lazer, Get Free. You can get Get Free for free from his website as well as Bonde Do Role's remix of it. Things are then changed up when Oggie goes for a deeper and perhaps more complex sound with Caribou's sultry remix of Radiohead's Little By Little; followed up closely with another Canadian talent, The French Nobility and So Cynical. This leads perfectly into the dead heavy bass sound with is signature to France's Gesaffelstein, with, his partner on the Bromance tour, Brodinski on the remix.

Keeping things heavy and processed we move to Fake Blood's classic remix of his own band, The Black Ghosts. Perhaps his best remix, production wise, although stay tuned in the coming weeks to hear contenders for that title. Staying on the remix wagon, we find ourselves in the middle of A-Trak's magical and jacking remix of Boys Noize's Oh! Once you thought the endless list of remixes was over Oggie hits in the heart of the ears with amazing Canadian talent Peaches and her take on LadyHawke's Paris Is Burning.

After the break, the dust of the remix explosion has settled and you are drawn to the serene yet haunting beauty of Robert Smith's vocals on Crystal Castles' Not In Love, perhaps how it was meant to sound with the vocals reminiscent of the time the original was written by Platinum Blonde right across Lake Ontario in Toronto almost 30 years before in 1983. Keeping with the Canadian content is Jacques Greene perfecting Katy B's vocals in his remix of Broken Record. Closing things out, winding things down and yet clearly still keeping a dance-able groove rhythm the set closes out with Erol Alkan's  very funky rework of Forever Dolphin Love and Tiga's remix of the fantastic lyrically telling James Murphy created I Can Change. Tune in next week same place, same time for more Enlightenment For Your Ears.

Hiatus

The program is currently on a brief hiatus for two reasons; one, while it seeks official status at CFBU, and two, because the station and it's volunteers are busy with the student union's referendum. Once it does achieve official status, the show will permanently move to Friday evenings from 6-7. Host, Oggie James will be able to play a much wider range of music to enlighten your ears. The show will heavily feature new and classic tracks from the following artists: Boy 8-Bit, The 2 Bears, Tiga, Fake Blood, A-Trak, Felix Cartal, Skream, Netsky, Booka Shade, Bowski, Azari & III, Nero, Sebastien Leger, Gesaffelstein, Brodinski, Foamo, Jacques Greene, The Prototypes, Rynecologist, Tommy Trash, Jack Beats, SBTRKT, Clouds, NT89, Jokers Of The Scene, Style Of Eye, Alex Metric, Boys Noize, Erol Alkan, Benga, Skrillex and many more.

We will update you on any updates we get concerning the show's status.
