Last weekend I welcomed Blair Malott to the Radio Humber studios for a chat ahead of his episode of My Mixtape which airs this Saturday, February 2nd at 11 PM EST. This is that conversation in full.
We discuss why he left Staccato behind in lieu of his given name; the therapeutic, experimental nature of his new, bass driven, side project Decarboxilate; his recent afterhours sets; working with Chuck Woodward; his upcoming releases; working with local labels and talent; and his episode of My Mixtape.FOLLOW BLAIR MALOTT: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Greg Gow - People Mover EP
Veteran Toronto DJ and producer Greg Gow has been moving people for the better part of two decades, most recently with the three track People Mover EP which came out Monday on Swedish imprint Truesoul. Not only will you hear a cut from said EP on tonight's episode of Bump In The Hump, you can also see him live in person as part of CODA's 5 Year Anniversary Saturday with Carl Craig, Mike Gibbs and Jackie Spade (RSVP/Tickets). Stream below and pick up People Mover now here.CODA is not the only one with an anniversary this weekend, as my friends at FUXWITHIT will also be celebrating their 5th year Friday at Nightowl (RSVP). However it's not just about anniversaries but also opening parties, as RL Grime plays the Grand Opening of Toybox (previously UNIUN) [RSVP/Tickets]. It's not all about clubs either, rather Bump In The Hump is packed with tracks that you can get down to anywhere you like. We're stocked up with future funk, wave, future bass, dubstep, trap, and remixes of both Hans Zimmer and Nero. Plus we're back to new episodes of My Mixtape, so we'll get you set up for the return of Blair Malott with a clip of my conversation with the artist formerly known as Staccato. All that and more live from 7-9 PM EST via Radio Humber and as cataloged on Mixcloud.

Tale Of Us - Afterlife Voyage 013
Whether it be through their own productions, their label Afterlife or their mixes, German duo Tale Of Us have been turning heads for years, first breaking through into mainstream consciousness with the runner up for Essential Mix of 2015. Last month they once again authored an awe-inspiring mix, the 13th edition of the Afterlife Voyage series, featuring countless forthcoming and unreleased tracks. Like Afterlife's motto "an odyssey through the realm of consciousness," this mix is one hell of a journey.
While writing this, and working on other odds and sods, I've made it through the first 47 minutes without it feeling like even half that length, however this is where I'm starting to notice a transition into more involving pieces, capturing my consciousness. Now of course this is not my first time listening to the voyage, and I am beginning to feel my favourite section coming to life. As many have noted in the comments, the second half of the mix seems to be the most widely appreciated, and I would agree as my two favourite IDs reside here. In fact when showing my friend this mix a couple weeks ago, I pressed play around the hour twenty-five mark but had to keep going back 5 minutes at a time because every time I moved back there was a banger waiting there for me.
So starting with the ID shortly after the hour mark through to what has been identified as NOID "125" and unreleased Ae:ther near the hour thirty-three mark, you cannot go wrong. But special attention has to be paid to the trio of tracks that starts with Ivory "Black Haired Sea" through to the aforementioned Ae:ther. This section is jacking, sweep you off your feet sensational, both with the blending transitions and the tracks' stunning sound designs. And while that section is truly a treat, a mere 10 minutes later we're welcomed to another exceptional run of IDs and unreleased cuts.
Much like Innellea "Vigilans," I was immediate awe-struck by the drop of Citizen Kain's "Indigo" at about 1:43:30. Of course the bleepy brilliance is all kinds of cool, but it wouldn't be nearly as effective without the deftly designed drums which add so much oomph there's no way you don't feel it in your core. Another one I cannot help but feel in my heart is of course the What_If edit of "Love Will Tear You Apart," which seemingly begins the descent into the expansive finale that includes Camille Luciani's take on "Sweet Disposition" and closes with a Kevin de Vries ID.
This more than two hour epic is most definitely a trip I'll continue to take whether I'm traveling, working out or just need a strong section for my shower and shave routine. Being that there's so many unreleased gems in here, I would not be surprised if it becomes one of my most played mixes this year, however I'll certainly be waiting with baited breath for the likes of that unreleased Ae:ther and "Indigo."FOLLOW TALE OF US: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Enlightened Listening for January 25
Friday's never disappoint when it comes to new music, and for this week's Enlightened Listening, I've honed in on a couple albums, and the latest Afterlife EP, alongside a handful of fantastic singles. As always stream below, find individual releases linked with brief descriptions at the bottom and enjoy!
Rudimental - Toast To Our Differences
Massive album from the masters. More features than you can count, including Jess Glynne, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Maverick Sabre, and more. The kind of quality and range you can expect from one of the world's best outfits. Some easy listening poppy bits with its share of heavier, DnB stompers.
BOT - BOT New World
Serious callbacks to his crazy Crookers days with weird, often times trippy deliveries. Colourful, vibrant and transportive techno. If this means we're coming back to this style, I'm game.
Fideles - Endless Sacrifice
I cannot get enough of Afterlife at the moment, and while I would've loved to have got my hands on some of the IDs in Tale Of Us's Voyage mix, this is certainly satisfying. At times overpowering and others spine-tingling, each track has an engulfing energy that, like BOT above, takes you places.
Sheridan Grout & GXD - Dam
Was not expecting this kind of banger, but I am most certainly here for it. Reminds me of one of my favourite mixes of all time, Cosmic Gate's 2011 Essential Mix. Beyond brilliant, absolutely euphoric!
Ducky - Day Zero
Lyrically and sonically punchy. Captures the same kind of energy as early Porter Robinson/San Holo.
QUIX - Stronger (ft. Elanese)
QUIX keeps innovating and moving the bar, keeping not just us listeners on our toes but his peers too. The consummate quality he always brings is astounding, and while we may already know that, it's hard not to get blown away by the drums and brass in the second drop. Wow, just wow.
Rusko - Squeeze (Burnin)
The world is a better place with Rusko pumping out beats, and that's exactly what he did with this one: pump. Fat af, this simple stunner is sure to get rinsed out all summer long, in fact it might just speed summer along, and I don't think anyone's complaining about that...
Haus Of Panda - Kick It
I don't know what I like more: 1) that Haus Of Panda's been dropping fire like this with incredible regularity for over a year now, or 2) that he seemingly raises the bar with each release. Certainly seems as though speed house is here to stay!
Dr. Fresh x BIJOU - Gangsta Party
The masters of menacing g-house combine for a couple chest rattlers. Not for the faint of heart, these are sure to do damage on the dance-floor.

Dombresky - Soul Sacrifice
Dombresky sure knows how to get people grooving, whether it be with his smart selections behind the DJ booth or when he's in studio making his own beats. Following the space-bound, synth led "Futurmastic" and acid rolling tech-house collab with Noizu "Rave Alarm," Dombresky delivers yet another spin on house, this time letting organic instruments take charge in "Soul Sacrifice." While the saxophone is the fulcrum of this track, the simple strength of the guitar and the dance-ready drums make it a spirited sensation. It takes very little imagination to see that this will certainly have people flying across the dance-floor, shuffling along to the sax lead. While it is certainly repetitive, it is an integral part of the lifeblood of the production, playing perfectly with the walking bass-line, giving a genius swing to the nearly four minute groover. Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: David Hohme & Dustin Nantais - Onward Only
Tomorrow the legendary trio of Above & Beyond take to REBEL for what promises to be an epic night (RSVP/Tickets). Not only do I have a remix of their classic "Sun & Moon" lined up in tonight's episode, it's also sandwiched by tracks from their own Anjunadeep imprint, including the just released David Hohme & Dustin Nantais collaboration "Onward Only." After first capturing my attention with "Crash & Burn," I've kept a close eye on Nantais and can safely say that this is the perfect place for his expansive, wandering sound. Stream it as a part of Explorations 08 and catch it in the mix tonight.
Above & Beyond are not the only Anjuna talents in the 6ix this weekend however, as Luttrell brings his Into Clouds tour to The Velvet Underground Friday (RSVP/Tickets). Rounding out the weekend of activities; Wingtip, Destructo and Mind Against all hit the decks Friday night (click names to see each event). Also on tonight's episode, we open with a first play from Vancouver's Hot Tub, make back to back stops at EPs from Shapeman and The Accountant, before closing with a strong serving of trap, midtempo, DnB and dubstep from the likes of So Sus, Slooze, Zeds Dead and AWAL. Listen live from 7-9 PM EST via Radio Humber or catch it after the fact as cataloged on Mixcloud here.

Luniz - I Got 5 On It (Jaymie Silk Edition)
One of the best gifts we got over the holidays was the trailer for Jordan Peele's forthcoming film, Us. Prominently featured in that clip, and seemingly garnering as much hype as the film itself, was a darker version of Luniz classic "I Got 5 On It." Today, as a part of his new Sorry I Don't Do Drugs EP, Jaymie Silk has taken advantage of that bloodcurdling cover and given it his own twist. Staying true to his club roots, Silk scorches the original with a blend of jungle, DnB and gabber, while paying penance to the eerily lurid and irksome twist found in the trailer. The screeches send shivers down your spine, the chords have your hairs standing on end, and the ominous atmosphere overwhelms. That said, Silk saves our souls by providing the power to combat the calignosity with capoeira (dance-fighting). The hard hitting, hyper force of the DnB sections soundtrack the fight against evil or, in the case of the film, your shadow self. Get the powerful reproduction of "I Got 5 On It" as part of the Sorry I Don't Do Drugs EP here and be sure to follow the genius that is Jaymie Silk with his socials below.FOLLOW JAYMIE SILK: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Peggy Gou - 2019letsgetit Mix
While many of us on North America's east coast are in the middle of an incredible deep freeze, we've caught a bit of a break with Peggy Gou's first BBC Radio One residency of the year. Calling the hour long mix "2019letsgetit," she shares music old and new, both entirely electronic and otherwise organic. Providing little insights into each selection, this is one of the best ways to get familiar with one of 2018's biggest stars and most trusted taste-makers. Of course I'm partial to Jay Daniel's take on "It Makes You Forget," however the new/old/new sandwich of Look Like "Do You Love," 2008 DFA release "Where's Jason's K," into Dorisburg's March release "Rytm," is exactly the kind of mix we expect from Gou - clubby, groovy and downright magical. That said, the final track, Jordan GCZ's "Minor 7 Resin" encompasses all those traits and more, warming our hearts and leaving use floating off into oblivion. Get the official stream via BBC Sounds here and follow the globetrotting Gou's socials for more!FOLLOW PEGGY GOU: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Enlightened Listening for January 18
Something, something, new year, new music. Yeah yeah, these intros can be formulaic and really, do you even bother to read them? It's about the music, which you'll find below. This week's Enlightened Listening has a couple killer remixes, the first release from Dr. Fresch's new label, and fire EPs from both Aylen and Masayoshi Iimori. Read brief descriptions below and enjoy your weekend. Cheers!
Tycho - Epoch (Luttrell Remix)
Your new alarm/wake up call. You can see the sun bursting over the horizon and feel its warmth. The already beautiful original gets a top notch touch up from one of techno's melodic masters.
Mark Ronson ft. Miley Cyrus - Nothing Breaks Like A Heart (Martin Solveig Remix)
The remixes just keep coming, only further showing the strength of the original. Solveig pairs his production with Cyrus' voice brilliantly, letting each lead, and the whole thing grow organically.
Bob Sinclar - Electrico Romantico (ft. Robbie Williams)
The longevity of Sinclar is stunning, and so is this. Poppy, uplifting and funky. I think this is my favourite track on this list.
Mishap - Motions
The first in a long run of bangers in this list. A really strong example of the hybrid nature of bass driven tracks we're seeing these days. Dubstep, trap and do I hear some Pink Floyd "On The Run"?
Noizu - Dance
Rolling raucousness, acidic punches and dark dirty vibes. Noizu remains one to watch; whether it be on CONFESSION, OWSLA, or BlackBook like this, he always brings bangers.
Aylen - Routines
Always on top of the sound design game, Aylen seems to have made XXL the home for his weird, and wickedly effective house tracks. Both tracks are weapons, but in this case I'm more for the a-side.
London Elektricity - Funkopolis
I still remember the first time I heard London Elektricity, and while I can't say any of his productions have captured my attention the way "All Hell Is Breaking Loose" did a decade ago, this comes close. These two share that same kind of cool, almost soundtrack style delivery. Funky and full of energy.
Various Artists - The Remedy Volume 1
You cannot go wrong with 1) anything Dr. Fresch touches or 2) a compilation that includes the likes of BIJOU, Tony Romera, Gerry Gonza and JAXX DA FISHWORKS. If g- and bass-house are your things, best keep your eyes and ears locked on The Prescriptions Records.
Masayoshi Iimori - Euphoria
While Aylen and Iimori work in different genres, I cannot help but see similarities in both the quality and wildness of their productions. Both are liable to batter your brains with any given release, and certainly that holds true with this three track tumult. It'll surely leave your head spinning and your body moving. If you're still on the fence, let me say that "FMW" gives me a Boys Noize vibe and what could be wrong with that?

Joe Goddard - Jack Come Back
After a relatively quiet 2018 following the smashing success of 2017's Electric Lines, Joe Goddard seems poised for another big year as he's already offered up a new original in "Jack Come Back," the lead single from forthcoming shared EP with Kiwi. Jack Come Back / LakE, which is due out February 8th via Cin Cin Records, has already whet our appetite with the title track already surfacing on Spotify below. Instantly bouncy with both its drum delivery and rubbery bass, it turns whatever surface you're standing on into a trampoline park. However this isn't some overly sanitized, family-friendly facility, it is dark and, in turn, dangerous - equal parts inviting and irksome. The omnipresent acid-tinge sends shivers down your spine as you become hyper-aware of warehouse's worn down equipment. However that's all part of the power and allure of "Jack Come Back," it is exciting, energizing and just a little bit risky. A giant, pulsating, guilty pleasure, I'll certainly be coming back to this while I wait for the full release with "Moebius Trip" and Kiwi's "LakE" and "KatE," February 8th. Pre-order now via Bandcamp.FOLLOW JOE GODDARD: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Jordan Astra - All Blessings (Mikey Palermo Remix)
On a tear behind the decks recently, playing Destructo's Friendship, opening for Dillon Nathaniel last weekend and set to open for Walker & Royce this weekend, Mikey Palermo is absolutely on fire. However his talents reach further than the wheels of steel, as I can say for certain the man has big stuff cooking on the production side for 2019. Our first example of this coming in his take on Toronto/Melbourne artist Jordan Astra. "All Blessings" sees Mikey in his wheelhouse, adding funky tech grooves to the catchy hip hop flow. Just like his genius "XO TOUR Llif3" bootleg from December of 2017, this is Mikey at his best. Stream below and follow Mikey's rise with socials at the bottom.Tonight's episode of Bump In The Hump plays host to many more Toronto talents in Vincent Caira, Art Department, Memphis and the debut release of newly formed duo COREKT (Duskope and Brock Edwards). The Magician - Magic Tape 86
After authoring some of my favourite mixes last year, The Magician's Magic Tape series returns with the 86th edition today. Always a top notch mix of disco, house, and funk from both the biggest acts and rising stars, the eclectic selection is sure to satisfy as well as set off your salivary glands as we get a taste of some new creations. Of the first seven tracks, five of them are unreleased or forthcoming with the two already released "Stay The Night" from HERO and "Paris Madness" from Samaran both coming in the last month. Certainly one could drool about all of these forthcoming releases but I can't get over 1) how good the Jamie Jones remix of Bob Moses is and 2) how well it goes into Rebūke's "Along Came Polly." With another Rebūke track, from the forthcoming Dirtybird Jump Ship EP, an ID and a vibes for days finale in 700 Bliss' "Ring The Alarm" and IZNiiK "Losing U," this is yet another awesome example of the quality of The Magician and his Magic Tape series. FIRE FESTIVAL 2019 OFFICIAL RECAP Playlist
This weekend the world was tuned in to the awe-inspiring success that was FIRE FESTIVAL 2019, the spiritual successor to last year's head-turning COALCHELLA. Boasting A.G. Cook, Arty, Hudson Mohawke, Iglooghost, Slumberjack, YOOKiE, and a whole host of others on one incredible bill, the two day extravaganza had everything. Whether you stayed locked in on one stage or took full advantage of the epic Minecraft world, the whole undertaking was an absolute wonder. As early as Saturday night, sets began to get shared to Soundcloud, many of which come complete with download and/or tracklist. While I (obviously) didn't get a chance to hear each set, a few of my favourites that you can find in SLEEPYCATT's official recap playlist are Krysh, Poolboy, and onlytom. Stream/download below.

Stevie Nicks - Stand Back (SanFranDisko Re-Visit)
Editor extraordinaire, SanFranDisko has done it again, this time re-visiting Stevie Nicks' 1983 single "Stand Back." Lending itself to this kind of edit thanks to the Prince played synthesizers (as Nicks wrote the song around the melody from "Little Red Corvette"), SanFranDisko leverages that lush lead adding just a little more oomph to the synthpop/dance-rock original. Already a triumphant number, this take feels even more fearless than before; Stevie stands resolute, staring daringly at a darkened, dreamy dance-floor. However this is par for the course for Nicks who always exudes a mystical allure, spellbinding listeners with for decades, and that's just what happens here. It's impossible not to get wrapped up in Stevie's sublime vocals and those sensational soaring synths, get them free here.FOLLOW SANFRANDISKO: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Deev - Hafla
Over the holidays, Lebanese dubstep producer Deev released a fire freebie entitled "Hafla." Blending Arabic instruments and blistering bass, the whole track is a whirlwind of energy, that at times explodes into a onslaught of DnB. The allure of the strings (both plucked and bowed) sweep you off your feet before getting drop-kicked by the force of the fulsome dub/drum-step delivery. These two elements work wonderfully together; just as the black hole of bass seems suffocating, the organic elements ease back in, giving you a breather as you enjoy the scent of spices and the vision of a colourful bazaar. As the track progresses and you get deeper into "Hafla," a word which means party, the wilder and more deranged it gets. All kinds of debauchery and seduction spin around you, and you can't help but take part. And why not give into the wicked wonder of such a sensation, you only live once right?FOLLOW DEEV: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings - I Learned The Hard Way (COPYCATT Flip)
Despite losing the legendary Sharon Jones nearly a year and half ago, her influence still stands strong as Aussie producer COPYCATT just released a chunky neuro re-groove of the 2010 classic "I Learned The Hard Way." Just like the original, the funky opening immediately captures your soul before becoming warped and twisted under COPYCATT's immense gravity. Like Thanos, you can see the deterioration happen first hand as the harmonious horns become a blistering bass battle. Jones and The Dap-Kings transform into a group of evil androids, glitching out in what would be best described as a heinous headbanging ritual. Its power is awesome, leaving you stunned at what has become of the beautiful heavyweight groove. All that said, the brilliance of COPYCATT's creation is that the DNA of the original still pumps through this franken-droid emulation. As diametrical as these sounds and styles may seem, the transition between them is actually seamless, best noticed in the overlap between drops (about 1:11-1:28). It is at this point that I'm reminded of Zeds Dead's "Coffee Break," a classic rework itself, and one that still satisfies. Whether COPYCATT's flip follows the same trajectory we won't know for a while, but we certainly can marvel at its unreal power. Download it absolutely free here.FOLLOW COPYCATT: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER
