Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings - I Learned The Hard Way (COPYCATT Flip)
Despite losing the legendary Sharon Jones nearly a year and half ago, her influence still stands strong as Aussie producer COPYCATT just released a chunky neuro re-groove of the 2010 classic "I Learned The Hard Way." Just like the original, the funky opening immediately captures your soul before becoming warped and twisted under COPYCATT's immense gravity. Like Thanos, you can see the deterioration happen first hand as the harmonious horns become a blistering bass battle. Jones and The Dap-Kings transform into a group of evil androids, glitching out in what would be best described as a heinous headbanging ritual. Its power is awesome, leaving you stunned at what has become of the beautiful heavyweight groove. All that said, the brilliance of COPYCATT's creation is that the DNA of the original still pumps through this franken-droid emulation. As diametrical as these sounds and styles may seem, the transition between them is actually seamless, best noticed in the overlap between drops (about 1:11-1:28). It is at this point that I'm reminded of Zeds Dead's "Coffee Break," a classic rework itself, and one that still satisfies. Whether COPYCATT's flip follows the same trajectory we won't know for a while, but we certainly can marvel at its unreal power.
