Enlightened Listening for June 29

Friday's never disappoint. Whether you want the biggest names or the freshest faces, there's always something spectacular somewhere. Hopefully I've done a good job finding a combination of both, with the usual range of genres and styles. Again I've done my best to deliver a diverse yet cohesive run through 12 tracks, from punchy PC Music stylings, through techno, house, disco, and more bass heavy bangers. Check the playlist below, read the descriptions following, and grab those free downloads.

DUCKY - Headfirst
Undeniable energy amidst a furious and fantastical flow. Great for diving into the long weekend.

Boy Sim - Solid Gold Clit (ft. Pearl)
Felt equally in your face and all over your body. Massive mind-bender of an anthem that you might not want stuck in your head, but will work its way in there regardless.

Eekkoo - Punks
Lead and title track from his just released 4 track EP. Another sensational, progressive and powerful take on techno, that delivers a godly groove with warm wobs, and tantalizing twists.

The Aston Shuffle - Everything I Got
Heavenly house with sublime synth swells that plays perfectly with the vocals (chops and otherwise).

The Pharcyde - Runnin' (Petko Turner's Extended Edit)*
Another awesome offering from Petko Turner. Big throwback vibes that will serve us well this weekend.

Fatback Band - Whicky Whacky (Count Funkula 12 Inch Fierce Discko Regroove)*
Party, party, party! Groove, groove, groove! Dance, dance, dance! Just let go and enjoy.

Family Of The Year - Hold Me Down (Autograf Remix)
Autograf deliver delicious quality as usual. This is massive, soulful and fun. Stunning.

Sultan + Shepard - I Got 5 On It
More throwback vibes brought bouncing back to beautiful life. Snappy, poppy and fun.

Tom Bull - It's My Life
Brilliantly banging bass house mix of Armand Van Helden's "You Don't Know Me." Simple yet strong.

POWERCYAN - Plutocracy (Ephixa Remix)
Stunning cinematics from Ephixa, which dive in a diabolic direction. Master craftsmanship.

NuKid x Lucille Croft - Got The Flow
Dirty, dirty, dirty stuff from NuKid as per usual. Not to sound old like Randy and in turn Stan on South Park, but I often envision bass sounds as farts, and this ones hella stanky (see here).

Diplo ft. DRAM - Don't Look Back (QUIX Remix)
Head spinning stomper of a remix. I can only imagine the exorcism that must've taken place to create the sounds in the drop. Absolutely wild.

L'impératrice - Vacances (Yuksek Remix)

When the weather is hot, nothing beats a breezy, bouncy groove, and that's just what we've got with Yuksek's remix of fellow French artist L'impératrice. "Vacances," which translates to holidays, is a comfortable cloud of a disco dream. It has all the hallmarks of a heavenly, hop-on-the-floor, summer sensation. The drum groove features a deft delivery that welcomes the wondrous guitar riffs, brilliant bass, sunny synth swells, petite yet princely piano and soaring seraphic singing. And while that list of components is nice, it doesn't compare the finding some shade on a hot day, and letting "Vacances" waves wash over you. Equally as enjoyable swinging in a hammock, watching the sunset/rise, as dancing the afternoon away. Take a holiday in your head and fly away with "Vacances." Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Robotaki - Science (Re-Examined)

Since then we were treated to the thrilling Allen French and Manu Dia takes on "Butterscotch" and "Limbo" respectively. Now the full Re-Examined remix EP is out with additional edits from Billboard, Madnap and Swardy (Ben Swardlick, one half of The M Machine). Stream them all below, download here, and tune into Bump In The Hump tonight to hear one of these in the mix.The summer continues as we look ahead to the Canada Day edition of Electric Island (RSVP/Tickets) with tracks from The Martinez Brothers, ANNA and Andy Cue. Tommy Kid - Psyqom

The term "club killer" is one I use rather frequently, but with Tommy Kid's "Psyqom" it has never been more appropriate. Harrowing like Hitchcock's Psycho and the accompanying Bernard Hermann soundtrack, the spine-tingling string stabs play front and center, while the Parisian producer's club quality commands the floor. The maddening mood and ominous intensity play right from the start, scorching the earth as rifling drum-fills ratchet up your heart rate. There is no escape as around each and every corner this crazed cut-throat lies in waiting, ready to lunge for your neck. Tommy Kid is said lunatic lyncher, showing off suffocating strength, preposterous power and a demonic disposition. You won't find many more fearsome forays than "Psyqom" which can be yours free via CyberSonicLA here.FOLLOW TOMMY KID: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

The Wild Now - Tongue Tied (Far & Few Remix)

I've covered Texas duo Far & Few several times, most recently with their potent collab with Blvk Sheep "Pop." Their range of bass tracks, primarily through the trap lens, shows off incredible production quality, a knack for nasty drops and an incredible versatility around vocals. The latter ability leads their two most recent, more vibey, productions "iwantuu" with ye. and "Ghosted," a take on on Sevdaliza and Stwo's "Haunted." But today the duo is back with a brooding banger, steeped in scowling synths and vicious, yet vaporous vocals.

The atmosphere of "Tongue Tied" is unmistakably menacing, grinding with the intensity of Rezz or Gesaffelstein, while still offering up crystalline clarity in the few haunting high-end notes. As always their percussion is on point, rolling the track forward with a playful progression that makes moving to the macabre joint easy. All this said, the quality of the vocal chops and their interplay in the drops is what makes "Tongue Tied" such a tremendous track. TVBOO - Wook Worm

Not only does bass music deliver some dope get-downs, serious screw-faces and full body vibrations, it's also incredibly fun to write about. Instead of bright, positive phrasing, I can get dirty with the dark side of my vocabulary. Yesterday Mississippi madman TVBOO's unleashed a "Wook Worm" whose sinister soul breeds a barrage of baleful, blistering bass. Its piano opening lays the foundation for the lethal, almost abusive, bass chords to come. But its not all about the brooding vibrations, the pestilent percussion its built around is equally successful in its sacrilege. And this is the key to TVBOO's cutthroat track's quality, it's not just one ruthless bass or drum sound, it is a relentless progression of poison pills, each more effective than the last. Another week, another invasion of artists to the 6ix. Sinjin Hawke & Zora Jones - God

Praise be to the deity duo of Sinjin Hawke and Zora Jones, who just announced their first collaborative EP, Vicious Circles, which is due out August 3rd on Planet Mu Records. "God" sits stream-ready as the first single from the Fractal Fantasy founders, and delivers the at once debaucherous and divine production quality we've come to expect. Their creativity is captivating and front and centre in this fiery delivery. The Bulgarian choir summons the strength of the booming bass; barbaric brass; pernicious percussion; sinister, spiraling synths and incredible, antagonistic vocal sample as heard in First Opus. Almost exactly like the first time I heard "Monolith (Overture)" last year, I'm absolutely convinced of this record's killer club quality; the intricacy, not just of the design but the interplay and movement, once again sets Hawke and Jones apart from all others in this sphere. Their almighty abilities remain illimitable and unparalleled. Get close to "God" by pre-ordering Vicious Circles and streaming below.FOLLOW SINJIN HAWKE: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Sweater Disco @ Spring Awakening 2018

Mix master Michael McReynolds, better known as Sweater Disco, first caught my attention with his absolutely wild mashup of A-Trak's "Head Will Roll" and Nomak's "Korean BBQ" (stream/download here). It's edits like this that highlight his (re-recorded) set from Spring Awakening. Describing his sets as "non-wack tunes played non-seriously" this hour long adventure is just that. Ranging from all varieties of house, with touches of trap, techno, throwbacks and freakouts, there's more than enough dance madness to go around. Find the tracklist in the description, and stream via Soundcloud below.I'm always one for a an experimental or left-field opening but boy does the Henry Wu selection seem inspired, especially in contrast to the depths of the tech house follow up, "Synchronise." The grooves and masterful movement just keep coming as the next 15 minutes bounce along brilliantly. The next piece I cannot help but notice and call attention to is of course the incredible Chris Lake/Walker & Royce collab "Dance With Me."

Things get further twisted as we work our way into Don Rimini's daft "Loop Da Loop" and DJ Ze MigL's mental "Push 2 Shove." The wild and weird fun then seems to peak as in the next couple minutes we get a four pack of Sweater Disco's own crafting with a barmy, bass heavy edit of Lil Pump "Movin" followed by two of his trademark mashups, capped by a presumably forthcoming collab with Lvndo.

Now if you think you've heard the best of Sweater Disco's top notch edits, I can just about guarantee your jaw will be on the floor as a dance circle builds around it. For 10+ straight minutes we're treated to five fire flips in a row. Masters At Work vs Sven Lochenhoer, M.I.A. vs Edwin Osterwaal and Kanye vs Ardalan/Justin Martin, all absolutely kill one after another. It is a delirium inducing dance delivery that stays sick right up until the last loop of DJ Icey's "Analog City." An unquestionable music odyssey, one worthy of revisiting as the summer progresses.

Chromeo - Head Over Heels

It's finally here. Chromeo's much anticipated fifth studio album, the first in four years, and their "love letter to all the sub-genres of funk that have influenced [them] over the years," Head Over Heels.
Reviews, comments and favourites are already pouring in, and after several full spins I'm quite confident Dave 1 and P-Thugg have not only lived up to the lofty expectations they've built through their killer catalog, but crafted a captivating album of full of energizing and electrifying funk.

We've already heard four fantastic singles and these eight new additions fit perfectly, propelling Head Over Heels into one of the most lush, loving albums you'll ever come across. The duo deliver more powerful heart palpitations than a marathon of your favourite rom-coms. Finally, while I'm floored by at least half of these new tracks, I think I'm most excited by the prospects of the remixes that are sure to arise (as we've already been treated to several top notch takes, and I can only imagine what's next).

As with almost all of Chromeo's oeuvre, love songs are the key component and that once again rings true here. "Must've Been" brings the youthful, naivety and puerile pleasure of a first love, welcoming listeners with a warm, weak at the knees awakening. Things mature a bit as "Don't Sleep" leads us into the game of love, the cherubic chase. It is playful peacocking, that while one "can't tell you who to love" you can certainly try to influence infatuation. And that's where we end up with "One Track Mind."

Almost creepy, although Dave 1 or Head Over Heels' narrator insists he's not, this is overt obsession. Crazy cool vibes rise through this utterly resplendent soundscape, perhaps the most intoxicating of the album. And as I mentioned above, it is this track that most excites me with the potential for remixes, as the elements and groove laid down are ludicrously cool and fantastically funky. And that's when perhaps the most fiercely funky track "Count Me Out" comes in, as DJ Quik's opening  identifies it as such. The slap-bass riffs play perfectly with the 3rd wheel lyrical content, sticking out like a sore thumb, jutting more impactfully than a cliffhanger season finale of your favourite show. Finally this one feels like my favourite track because it plays host to perhaps Dave 1's best lyrical content. Not just his delivery of the Mazda Miata line but the mathematical word play, specifically the "I know that you're free / but I never knew a couple was supposed to be three" line had me in stitches. And this leads me to a thought that first arose when Chromeo announced they were using their own legs, no longer women's.

While lyrically, all of the love songs are focused on women (even the interlude sung by women, saying "Right back home to you girl"), these are always empowered women. And never more so than in the next two tracks "Bad Decision" and "Just Friends." The power is in their hands, with Dave 1 becoming a slave on a leash, ready to buy a ring, empty his bank account and declaring it Amber Mark's world. And that's seemingly just the way he likes it. It feels like home as we hear in the increasingly funky interlude, which like "Bedroom Calling Pt. 1" sends us spinning in spine-tingling spirals.

The two other tracks we haven't heard yet "Slumming It" and "Room Service" took a couple plays for me to really get into. Both are classic Chromeo cuts, offering up genius grooves and pristine production. The slow burn of "Slumming It" reaches fever pitch with the sultry sax solo, one I'm interested to see if they'll include in their tour performances. "Room Service" fits fantastically as the finale as again it nails the enamour-laden nature of not just Chromeo's lyrical output but production quality. It is warm, playful and singularly focused affection, as in their oeuvre there is nothing better. And that's why it's so good. It fills you with love, hope and enthusiasm; things I cannot wait to experience as these salacious sounds take over the Danforth Music Hall July 3rd. I know that this will be one of my albums of the year, I'll be playing it for weeks and months to come, and will be patiently waiting for remixes. Long live Chromeo!

Bells And Robes - Jackal And The Moon

Electronic music will always have an alien appeal, as we cannot see the strings, skins or reeds vibrating. There is some kind of disconnect, almost fantastic or magical. And for me that is why I'll be drawn to it. It's personal in how your brain receives it and where it takes you. That said, the best compositions tend to lead listeners to the same place, perfecting their storytelling. And that is the case with the latest from Bells And Robes, "Jackal And The Moon" as 'narrated' by Kaisune.

Following on the heels of their exquisite and out of this world Pleasures Of The Mind EP, "Jackal And The Moon" again eases into ears with wondrous, warm instrumentation and shimmering synth work. Comparable to Daktyl, Lido and Flying Lotus the mixture of sounds and styles makes for not only an unmistakably moonlit atmosphere but a chilling one at that. The room left for each element to play its part, and Kaisune's killer vocals to come out on top, is yet another example of Bells And Robes' brilliance. But for my money, the reason this track is such a stunning success is its ability to so seamlessly sew life and humanity into the combination of electronic and organic sounds. Find it free via Bandcamp and Zen Fresh Records, and be sure to check out more of their captivating catalog here.

All this week NXNE is taking over the city with dozens of events, and seemingly more popping up each day. Then again you don't even have to purchase anything for the Yonge-Dundas Square Festival Village events (Friday through Sunday) which include CHVRCHES, Tinashe, Jazz Cartier and more. That said there's still several non-NXNE shows happening and I'll be showcasing them on Bump In The Hump as well. Below you'll find a list of those events you'll hear from and about tonight. Click through for more details, to RSVP and pick up tickets (if necessary).

The summer of Chromeo continues with another remix of "Must've Been" before Head Over Heels drops Friday. Pusher makes his triumphant return with "Sober." We get funky with tracks from Sparkee and Zanski's EPs, and get a first play of Hanz Ford's forthcoming track "Abyss." Crowd Control & Popka - Happiness Therapy Split (Vol. 1)

Just over a year ago I was introduced to French house producer Crowd Control through BADLQQK and his sensational RQQKIES release "I House You." This potent palette pleaser was a wonderful warm up for his beautiful blend of throwback house tracks, particularly his Invitation To A Better Place and 90's Groove EPs. Now this week we've got our first full look at his next release, a split EP with UK producer Popka, Happiness Therapy Split, which is set for a Friday (June 15th) release. Get it here. These two are a perfect fit, filling this EP with warm, buoyant and utterly enjoyable grooves, and dance-worthy delights. From start to finish it hearkens back to a time when house had heart, with a masterful mix of electronic and organic instrumentation.

"Yes It's Me" shows off Crowd Control's fantastic feel for filtering, allowing listeners to ease into the groove before being pushed onto the floor with propellant horn hits. Diving right into a brilliant bass line "Can't Keep My Hands" offers up some sensational sampling of T.S. Monk and again sets the table for this dance-all-night kind of EP. And this is where Popka takes over and really runs with things.

Offering up two 8+ minute tracks the second half of Happiness Therapy Split spirals into a Soul Train Line. "Rhythm Child" and its extended excellence plays host to more elements than you can shake a stick at, allowing you to take a breather mid-track, then return in full force with a new routine. Finally "Too Much Pressure" bookends the EP by again easing you into its wobbly warm groove before cutting back the vocal chops and letting the synth lead out. And again like "Yes It's Me" the filtering in and out of layers gives great dynamism and dance-worthiness. Best of all, the final flourish once again reveals the organic, human heart behind the electronic nature of house. Truly a perfect cap to this EP.

LH4L - Elastic (ft. Overjoyed)

French filth manufacturer LH4L (L'homme Aux 4 Lettres) has been on one hell of a run in the last couple months. Firing off originals "My Peop," "Holly," "How Low," and "Good Body Gyal" along with a Summer Jam edit of "Whistle." all since the first of April it's hard to believe that he's authored yet another track. But here we are with "Elastic" featuring New Yorker/Venezuelan duo Overjoyed. Almost impossible to categorize, this track is wicked wildness that will leave your heart racing and your head spinning. Despite one unnecessary comment "I can't dance on it," I find it to be an incredible club track that will have you inventing a new dance craze. It is this unhinged, untamable energy that makes "Elastic" such a savage sensation. Stream via Soundcloud below, Spotify here and iTunes here.FOLLOW LH4L: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Shakedown - At Night (Purple Disco Machine Extended Remix)

There's no doubt disco is on the rise as of late with Chromeo's Head Over Heels looming large, Diplo joining the fray with Silk City, and A-Trak spinning a disco set during Coachella weekend. All that said, there is perhaps no better indication of disco's latest revival than seeing Purple Disco Machine atop both the Beatport and Traxsource charts. At this very moment the German's remix of classic 2002 Shakedown track "At Night" looks down on all other tracks, regardless of genre. I'm not sure I've ever seen this before, but after a full stream and further thought it's easy to understand why.

Frankie Knuckles said it best, calling house disco's revenge and while people are still ravenous for the likes of dubstep, future bass, trap and other genres, house will always be the heartbeat of electronic (dance) music. "At Night," and Purple Disco Machine's updated version more specifically, blurs the line between the two brilliantly. It has all the hallmarks: a groovy syncopated bass line, glitzy guitar riffs, sublime string swells, intoxicating vocals, and a playful pluckiness that in this extended mix allows for effortless all night dance enjoyment. It is abundantly bouncy, keeping your body vibing from your head to your toes, filling each four-on-the-floor bar with a feeling of freedom and confidence to groove in whichever way you want. And in the end this is exactly what makes disco, house and truly all of electronic music so special; it works on such a visceral level, both singularly personal and as a shared community. There really is no better feeling, so try it for yourself via Defected Recordshere.

Enlightened Listening for June 8

Another Friday, another massive day of releases, and another edition of Enlightened Listening. Booka Shade and Chromeo continue to bring brilliant remixes to light, Sparkee drops his Technically Impossible EP, Fraudulent Records share their second release and Skrillex returns with a classic remix. All this and more in the playlist below with descriptions at the bottom. Note free downloads via asterisk.

Booka Shade - Night Surfing (Booka Shade Rework)
The cool flowing grooves of the original become even more smooth and hypnotizing, as though upgrading from VHS to Blu-ray. Sublime swells that are sure to satisfy dance-floors and ears alike.

DAAV & Relique - In My Head*
While bass, deep and g-house are all on the rise, the vast majority of it is safe, unadventurous and all too close to tech house. This collab brings back the wild, animalistic energy that its been missing.

Sparkee - Play That Music
More free form and playful than his PINEO & LOEB collab, this could easily be confused as a Chromeo production, although keen observers will note Sparkee's inimitable bass work. The whole EP is absolutely fantastic, but because of the solos, this is the track that most caught my attention.

Aeroplane - Body (ft. Yves Paquet)
With more and more disco (and disco-adjacent) records being released these days one could become overwhelmed, however this track's effortlessness and light-flowing luminosity set it apart from the rest.

Pendulum - The Island, Pt. 1 (Dawn) [Skrillex Remix]
The first Skrillex release in what seems like forever. In true form it is immaculately designed, and necessarily so as this is a classic track. It might not be as ground breaking as some of his earlier work, but there's no denying the strength of this warm reconstruction. Expect to hear this a lot this summer.

Chromeo ft. DRAM & Jesse Johnson - Must've Been (Yolanda Be Cool Remix)
Yet another delightfully delicious and dance-worthy remix of this DRAM led track. Somehow this is able to lay claim to both the most banging and groovy of the bunch. THE ALBUM IS OUT NEXT WEEK!

Louis The Child ft. Wafia - Better Not (Attlas Remix)
The stage Attlas sets is an incredible one. It shimmers serene, while leaving room for Wafia to sing on top. And again this is where Attlas' genius comes through. His always resplendent productions bring life to each note, allowing the story to be told through the instrumental elements.

Mija - Falling ApART (Again) [Kill Paris Remix]
There's some kind of sneaky beauty not just in Mija's lyrics but the distressed and deep diving chords. The dynamics, especially the solo'd sounds and empty spaces are brilliantly bewitching. Gulp.

DLMT & Vanrip - The Light (ft. Deverano)
Opposing the title of the track this one is heavy, at least in the bass, which goes deep. Wobbly and warped, this delivery is an absolute delight, especially as Deverano's voice gets a genius call and response/echo effect with the vocal chops. Another undeniable summer sensation.

DUX - Lady Of The Night (ft. Stan Taylor)

It's probably not a good sign to be at a loss for words as I begin a piece, but here I am. I'm struck by DUX's "Lady Of The Night" in so many ways. Let's start chronologically shall we?

A couple months back the Boston-born, California-based artist uploaded a video (below) of himself, vocalist (and apparent stunt driver) Stan Taylor, along with the four other artists behind "Lady Of The Night," all jammed in a car performing the funky piece. Not only are the visuals something to behold, but the song is quite simply sensational. Of course this had people clamoring for a download/stream or the likes, and DUX came through last week with just that (Soundcloud/Spotify).
The studio version brings the same fun and easily enjoyable warmth of the live version, in an even more fulsome manner. We already know how polished and powerful Stan Taylor is, but the fact that his voice is still full of passion removes any doubt that this version is stale or lifeless. And this is the key to the success of a song such as this. It must have a heart and soul, and like the titular character, this decidedly does. Find it as part of DUX's Sarita EP, which is due out tomorrow (June 8th) see here.

The Melker Project - Ballin' Oates

No it's not Throwback Thursday, but today I got invited to see Hall & Oates at the Air Canada Centre. So I figured no better time to share one of my favourite projects, that of Scott Melker and his ingenious combination of classics from Fleetwood Mac, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and of course Hall & Oates, with rap, hip hop and RnB. Sadly removed from Soundcloud (but still on Youtube below) the Ballin' Oates project is my favourite with Wu-Tang, T.I., Twista and others adding to the allure that is Hall & Oates.
The classics from Hall & Oates are unmistakable, undeniable and still stand strong despite all the additional instrumentation and vocals, and the first track "Claneater" is a perfect example of that. Pitting Wu-Tang against "Maneater" shows off Melker's masterful recasting, as these are actually not the originals, but completely replayed and remixed versions with additional acapellas. And like with "What You Know? You're Out Of Touch!" the pop perfection of their backing track continues to resonate resplendent despite this trapped out recasting.

The visceral vibrations each of these tracks brings is exactly why I'm so excited to see duo take the stage tonight; there is just some kind of magic that permeates throughout their productions. And again that alchemy comes through in droves as Twista's fearsome flow bounces atop the keys of  "Kiss On My List," as though straight out of Big. These tracks are tremendously fun too, and I don't mean just the production either; part of the fun arises in the names as "Rich Girl Meets Rich Boy" and gets some d's thrown on it. The final track "Melker Can't Go For That" doesn't get any additional vocals, but instead receives a pure remix from the man himself. It further showcases Melker's mindset and dank trapped out delivery, alongside the supremely smooth and sultry original synths. It is the kind of track you could end a set or evening with, sonically laying listeners down easy, tucking them in for the night.

If this excites you at all, I strongly recommend checking out more of Melker's catalog (best done through Youtube). Also be sure to follow his socials below and maybe you'll find some download links.
