Throwback Thursday: Bloc Party - One More Chance (Alex Metric Remix)

For this week's installment in my Throwback Thursday series, it's with great pleasure that I take a stroll down memory lane to enjoy Alex Metric's magnificent remix of Bloc Party's "One More Chance." Lately, I've been enjoying Bloc Party's triumphant return to the world of music, through their new album Hymns. It's also spurred some nostalgic re-listening to much of their masterful back catalog, especially my favourites: the raucous "Hunting For Witches," the undeniably awesome "Banquet," the torturous beauty of their cover of Nelly Furtado's "Say It Right," the inescapable groove and funk of their version of Chromeo's "Needy Girl," and of course the topic of this post, the injection of energy that is "One More Chance."

My first foray into Bloc Party came back when I used to like "How I Met Your Mother" before its disastrous and alienating final season. During the season one finale their track, "This Modern Love" plays through one of the more dramatic scenes. As is the case with television and film the music can play an integral part, invoking the nostalgic feeling whenever you hear it. In fact, there are only five tracks in my iTunes with over 100 views, and two of them hold this sentimental value, of course, "This Modern Love," as you'll see below, and the incredible power of Blonde Redhead's "Elephant Woman," as it appears in the film, Hard Candy.
But back to Alex Metric and his remix of "One More Chance." I was inspired to write about this track in part, as I said above, because of Bloc Party's new album, but also because we are nearing the five year anniversary of Alex Metric's Essential Mix. The first time I heard Alex Metric was when Pete Tong premiered his collaboration with Steve Angello "Open Your Eyes" as essential new tune and declared that it need a festival named after it, it was so large. And quite rightly so, I believe it to still be one of the best tracks to open up a set, and even one of the best tracks of all time. The chords, the uplifting nature, the acid tinged twist, and then the insanity inspiring drop complete with whirling effects and tremendous tweaks, that in turn team up for syncopated psychosis, make it a force to be reckoned with, even after more than five years. But I'll let Pete and the chune speak for themselves below:

Once again I've fallen off track, this post is supposed to be about his "One More Chance" remix. Put bluntly, Alex Metric's Bloc Party remix is all of the best parts of his repertoire. It's got the necessary electro elements, punchy piano, sweeping strings, heart throbbing basslines, and masterful vocal usage, that is only amplified by Kele Okereke's inimitable style and grace. Metric adds, subtracts and manipulates elements the way a mad scientist conjures an invincibility potion, and boy did it work. "One More Chance," sounds as good and fresh as it did when it first came out. It's like he says in his Essential Mix intro: it's his past, present and future, filtering the attitude and feeling of big beat, the anything goes ethos, no genres, just good music. That philosophy run through his remix of "One More Chance," and is precisely what makes his Essential Mix, one of my favourites of all time.
The storytelling inherent in his mix is only made possible through his incredible tracklist. Whether it's old school funk from Chaka Khan or Colonel Abrams, genius combinations like The System and Daft Punk, brain busting remixes like Style Of Eye's dub of "Open Your Eyes," the freshness of Light Year's "Zzafrika" remix, the acid of King Cosmic and Djedjotronic's "Hot Mess" remix, the arching progression of Marc Romboy and Stephan Bodzin's "Triton," the awesome exclusivity of Yuksek's remix of Katy Perry's "Peacock" so brilliantly mixed with LCD Soundsystem's "You Wanted A Hit," the obligatory inclusion of New Order's "Blue Monday," his production credit on the Infadels' "Black Sky" leading to the fearsome finale of Toto's "Hold The Line" and fitting Beatles "The End." His mix hits on a cylinders and delivers in so many ways. It is perfect listening for just about any situation, doing school work, pre-drinking or after-partying. The blog "Blah Blah Blah" has a full tracklist and download link attached that you can find here. Highly recommended listening, that I'm sure you'll find inspires you to search for more Alex Metric of your own.

Cardiknox - On My Way (Champagne Drip Remix)

After playing his remix of Grandtheft's "Summer In The Winter," on the last episode of Bump In The Hump (episode here), the enigmatic Champagne Drip put his touch on Cardiknox's "On My Way." A mixture of drum and bass and happy hardcore vibes lead the track from the start, before the bright and supportive neon vibes join Cardiknox's inspirational and anthemic vocals. Incredibly uplifting and energetic, Champagne Drip's production bolts with incredible haste, at an almost nightcore pace, that will leave your head spinning. The lightning quick progression between elements that launches Cardiknox's track into the great beyond, doesn't follow a linear trajectory, further establishing the maniacal genius of Champagne Drip and his incredible production style. Following the lyric "nothing's going to get in my way," Drip quite simply kills it with a masterfully manipulated and exceedingly exuberant drop.

The track further devolves into a enchanted haven of spinning ecstasy, surrounded by sparkling steel drums and perfect pans. With a corroded fake out ending, Champagne Drip brings back Cardiknox in rapid succession before once again ratcheting up the effervescence for a final frenetic flourish of fantastical proportions. Champagne Drip succeeds in creating a track that strikes the perfect balance between subtlety and hitting you over the head; "On My Way" is a track that every music fan ought to enjoy for it's incredible, awe inspiring production value, heart-pounding progression and inescapable allure.

Photay - Sadie EP

There really is nothing like waking up to new music in your inbox, especially when that music is so bright, sparkling, uplifting and like nothing you've ever heard. That is the case when I opened up Photay's latest release, Sadie, a four track EP on Astro Nautico. Light hearted and full of joy, Sadie's collection of tracks sail smoothly along with vibes reminiscent of SBTRKT, Danny L Harle and Ryan Hemsworth. Just last night, on my way home from Keys N Krates, I found myself clamoring for more midrange music (not downtempo or bangers), so I immediately went to my go to tracks Henrik The Artist's remix of Mark Redito's "So Many Things To Tell You," Y2K's remix of Noonie Bao's "Pyramids," and Tennyson's "Slipperz." It's the immense creativity and playfulness of these tracks, that you find front and centre in Photay's productions.

Each of the tracks has incredible progression and movement, alongside a wide array of instrumentation. While building the tracks in a way that injects familiarity, each track boasts a creative freshness that is incredibly alluring. There are no weak spots, or even ordinary or middling tracks in Sadie; it would be impossible to choose one as my favourite. The lead track "Zeitgebers" performs its function perfectly, building its playful repertoire piece by piece with the utmost intelligence. "Monday," the track featuring himself as vocalist, shows incredible, subdued beauty, so much so that you'll never be able to view Mondays the same way. "Trophy" may be the most boisterous of the bunch, and excels with triumphant synth work, worthy of a victory parade. The final, double track, "Wipe The Sleep From You Eyes," is both the most restrained yet free flowing musical track, finding room for an incredibly funky and playful sax solo. Sadie will find its way into many of my playlists and should quickly become one of my most played albums. SUPPORT PHOTAY: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Seven Lions - Creation

Jeff Montalvo has the heart of not just one but Seven Lions, graceful and yet full of deadly power, as evidenced in his towering and imposing 8 track EP, Creation. It is an incredible tour de force, with sweeping sections worthy of a full symphony accompanied by twisted blasts of dark magic; Seven Lions adds his name to an illustrious shortlist of artists that have crafted a cohesive electronic album, not a mere collection of singles. Big praise for this incredible and absolutely engrossing artistic achievement. SUPPORT SEVEN LIONS: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Gramatik - Epigram

Nearly a year after we received the first taste of Gramtik's album, Epigram, with the tracks "Native Son" and "Corporate Demons," the day has finally arrived for its full release. And as is Gramatik's belief, the full 10 track album is available for free download. His generous and free thinking approach to making and delivering music is abundantly evident in his genre ignoring approach. He does what he feels and that liberation leads to an incredible transfer of emotions through his music into your ears, and verily your soul. The album's title, Epigram, is an incredible fit and furthers the theme of autocracy and absolute liberty. Gramatik is the definition of a true artist, making a point with his delectable designs.

Destructo ft. Ty Dolla $ign & iLoveMakonnen - 4 Real (Drezo Remix)

Drezo bring his inimitable style to Destructo's latest collab with Ty Dolla $ign and iLoveMakonnen, "4 Real." His incredible sub-harmonic manipulations are front and centre once again, relentlessly wrapped around the vocals for maximum intensity. I sure hope you've got a a good subwoofer when you're listening to this, I know when I heard it last weekend, at No Neon, the bass was enough to rattle my soul. Jauz X Netsky - Higher

One of the most highly anticipated collaborations, Jauz and Netsky's "Higher" is officially out via Ultra Music. Part of Netsky's forthcoming album III, this combination of the high powered veteran abilities of Belgian bad boy Netsky and man of the moment, Jauz, proves the sky is the limit. Even the lofty expectations attached to such a massive and ambitious partnership have been satisfied with the seemingly perfect combination of sounds and styles. Netsky's undeniably excellent musical composition is only amplified by Jauz's incredible low end. While the drop isn't mind blowing or anything over the top, its simple yet exceedingly groovy throbs and pernicious percussion create a clean and well constructed piece of music. Having already made its way into countless sets, I can only imagine "Higher" finds its way into more sets and as of its release today, many more iPods and car stereos.  Pre-order III now and you'll instantly receive "Higher," "Forget What You Look Like," "Work It Out," and "Rio," ahead of the album's May 20th release.

Throwback Thursday: Friendly Fires - Paris (Aeroplane Remix)

For this week's installment in my Throwback Thursday series, it gives me great pleasure to reintroduce the world to one of the catchiest and most beautiful melodies, situated around some of the most infectious vocals and bumping basslines, Aeroplane's remix of Friendly Fires' "Paris." Simple soaring beauty propels Aeroplane's remix right from the start, with its subtle disco percussion and sprightly synth plucks. Add the depth of the bassline, and the track really starts to take off. The lightness and ethereal quality of Au Revoir Simone's vocals shoot "Paris" into the stratosphere, imbuing the track with a heavenly essence. The sheer magic of Aeroplane's mix seems to be utterly endless, whether it's the progressive playfulness of the melody and percussion, the sweeping atmospheric movement, the manipulated madness (starting at about 4:17), or the slow but steady release of tension with the final, exalted flourish (at about 6:34); everything Aeroplane puts into his remix exudes lush and rapturous elegance. If you are at all familiar with Aeroplane's catalog, this will come as no surprise to you, his productions are quite simply aesthetic beauty in their most concise and profound form.

I first came across his remix of "Paris" when he was the 500th DJ to do an Essential Mix back in 2010. In that mix (which lives up to his incredible standards of beauty), it was mixed with Flight Facilities' "Crave You" to create one of my favourite mashups ever. Find both (available for free download, courtesy the man himself), the full Essential Mix, and the recreated mashup, below. If I may further add two more suggestions of Aeroplane tracks that you simply must hear, I highly recommend his remixes of Gypsy & The Cat's "The Piper's Song," and The Human League's "Never Let Me Go." Get on board the Aeroplane of awesomeness and travel to a simpler, more beautiful time. SUPPORT AEROPLANE: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Mura Masa x T-Pain - Lovesick Fuck, Can't Believe It

This week on Bump In The Hump, I'm incredibly excited to bring to air a mashup that I've been listening to nonstop for more than a week. First heard in Benzi's Girl Trapz Volume 9, BryceM88 combined Mura Masa's "Lovesick Fuck" and T-Pain's "Can't Believe It." Unfortunately, it is one of 13 original, edit, VIP, remixes that was made specifically for Girl Trapz and was not posted anywhere online, meaning you had to skip to the specific part to hear it. Not being satisfied with that I decided to put together an extended version, that included both drops. I've now uploaded it to my soundcloud, for free download, but you'll also find it as this week's Mashup In The Middle, on Bump In The Hump, Radio Humber. Tune in live tonight from 6-7 EST (stream link here), to hear it with more of the best Canadian electronic music.

Point Point - True Summer

Parisian duo Point Point fearlessly led us into the weekend with their new single "True Summer." Despite yesterday being only the first day of Spring, Point Point establish a futuristic sound, inciting palpable anticipation for the longer, brighter and warmer days to come. Pick up the track, here.
Incredibly light and airy, the minimal approach from Point Point is simply sublime. From its fluttering, almost alarm-clock pulsating, beginning, to the added swooning synths and creatively crafted clicking percussion, the track slowly ascends like a sunrise. It would fit perfectly as either, an after the club wind down track, or a morning wake up call. Nothing about "True Summer" hits you over the head, but its unavoidable beauty seems to swell out of this subtle, refined approach. Aided by waves of atmosphere, from the synths or the vocals, the movement and progression of the track is incredibly organic. I expect "True Summer" to get tons of play throughout the festival season, both as the original, and likely through supercharged remixes utilizing many of Point Point's perfectly produced sounds.

San Holo, Haywyre and Grabbitz at The Hoxton

Last night three Monstercat artists hit the stage at The Hoxton. First up was Grabbitz who dropped his new collaboration with Pegboard Nerds "All Alone" as I first entered the club. I was late arriving and unfortunately missed the majority of his set, I did however catch his track "Better With Time" and his finale "Float Away," while he high-fived, shook hands and fist bumped his appreciative fans. You can hear each of the above tracks, in the playlist below: Crowd interaction was certainly one of the themes of the night, as following his set, San Holo joined the crowd for an impromptu meet and greet. Throughout his set, as you'll see in the videos below, many people in the crowd were trying to grab him, get his attention and make requests showing him their phone. He certainly seemed to oblige many of these ravenous fans, both with his incredible tracks selection and professional mixing. The video (below) of the beginning of his set will help to establish the atmosphere. Even better imagery of the incredible hype that San Holo's set induced, with this guy going crazy. His tracklist featured all of his most well known productions, "We Rise" and "Fly" in the videos above, as well as "BWU," "Donkey Kong," "Victory," "Hiding" and "New Sky," but the biggest ovations came when he dropped his Don't Touch The Classics remixes "Ride Wit Me" and "Ms. Jackson," which followed "The Next Episode" in the video below. He complimented his already swirl and sparkle ridden set with Flosstradamus' Jack U, Post Malone mashup, Rustie's "Big Catzz" and his forthcoming official remix of DJ Snake's "Middle." Once again I've compiled a playlist of many of the tracks he dropped last night, below. Finally it was Haywyre's turn to take the stage, and boy did he ever deliver. It was an unbelievable sensory experience, watching his fingers flying over his keyboard, and the incredible visual display behind him. Of course this is without mentioning his obvious talent and artistry. It was absolutely mesmerizing watching him move from track to track so flawlessly pouring his heart and soul into his performance. Adding a couple of covers, including Daft Punk's "Robot Rock" and Oliver Nelson's remix of "All Cried Out," he was able to bolster his massive library. He played his tracks "Do You Don't You," "Impulse," "Moment," "Memory," "Endlessly," "Back And Forth" "Crimson" and "All We Need." Once again you can attempt to relive the night with the playlist below, although it won't be able to hold up to the energy of his incredible live performance. Syn Cole - The Daze (feat. Madame Buttons)

Syn Cole sets to brighten your Friday, enchanting you with his latest track "The Daze" featuring Madame Buttons on vocals. Stream now on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music or get your copy from iTunes.
Lush, warm tropical synths ascend like a steamy haze, the appropriate response to which, is to relax by the ocean, enjoying the cool breeze, personified by the swirling island flute. The depth of instrumentation and personality behind each, makes it feel as though you're at an island club watching a local band perform their traditional music. Despite its electronic origins, "The Daze" feels incredibly organic and seems to wash over listeners with great ease.

That is the true beauty of electronic music, when an artist breathes life and character into the vacuous samples, and seemingly endless instrumentation. There's a reason orchestral music has survived so long; the combination of a large group of individuals, playing in unison to create a larger work of art, is incredibly alluring. As much as I love DJ sets, I'll always be a sucker for live performances. There really is nothing like watching an artist at work, and of course, truly great DJs can be such.

In the case of "The Daze," it certainly helps to have Madame Buttons injecting the track with fabulous warmth and passion. Her vocals delicately dance atop the musical bed Syn Cole has set out. The motion and movement in her performance invokes the image her spinning around, eyes closed, arms spread, in completely overwhelming ecstasy. This is the cherry on top, perfectly personifying "The Daze" as just that, a simply stunning and engulfing production.

Throwback Thursday: Burns - Midknight

For this week's installment in my Throwback Thursday series, it's with great pleasure that I reintroduce the world to the intense, electro stylings of Burns' boisterous bass-belter, "Midknight." This video speaks for itself, synced to hilarious perfection taking this Jane Fonda workout from the ping pong rally sample through throbbing bass squelches, stabbing synth strikes and ever growing intensity and anticipation. Punctuated by percussion and vocal clips, the depth and inescapable blight of this dark knight of a track stand the tests of time. "Midknight" could easily fit into many of today's sets, carving out an incredible atmosphere rife for apocalyptic, end of days bass drops and tremendously turnt transitions. In fact I first heard "Midknight" in Jack Beats' live essential mix from Creamfields, back in 2011, sandwiched between their remixes of Tommy Trash's "The End" and AC Slater's "Jack Got Jacked." It goes without saying that it's an unbelievable awesome set, Jack Beats at their best, featuring a whole bunch of their tracks new and old. If you'd like the check out said mix, I've uploaded it to my dropbox (link here).

Bestival Lineup Annoucement

Screen-grab from www.bestival.ca approx. 2PM March 14
Bestival's Canadian cousin returns for a second Toronto edition with it's new Woodbine Park location, June 11th-12th. Friday they announced The Cure and Tame Impala as headliners, while the additional 33+ were named today. Once again Bestival can boast one of the most forward thinking, cohesive combination of progressive, boundary pushing artists, spanning a number of genres, while managing to cultivate an exquisite overall aesthetic. Last years engrossing aura tied everything together in it's omnipresence and is the only thing I think may suffer from this mainland edition. Crossing to the island last year was a rite of passage, inevitably invoking an unconscious suspension of disbelief as one stepped off their boat onto the island. The lineup however remains a draw for many different musical subcultures, yet again rivaling any other festival in Canada.

The combination of artists fills every box you could possibly check off. Massive, time-tested, legendary headliner (The Cure), incredibly hot, uber hip, legend makers (Tame Impala), progressive live acts (Odesza, Grimes, Porter Robinson, Madeon), genre leading DJ/producers (Tchami, Dubfire, Thomas Jack, Joris Voorn, Lee Foss, Giraffage, etc), trusted taste-makers (Anna Lunoe, Rob Da Bank) and swath of the best local talents (Art Department, Shaun Frank, Thugli, Pusher, HRMXNY, etc.).

After TRC made their predictions Thursday, I was determined to buy tickets if The Cure were announced. Despite being woefully unaware of The Cure, apart from what local radio and Hollywood had pushed, (Friday, I'm In Love and of course Robert Smith's Not In Love with Crystal Castles) I found I couldn't get enough of "Halo" after hearing it in a car one fateful afternoon. "Halo" seemed to strike a chord with me and quickly became one of my favourite songs, but for some reason I didn't venture any further into The Cure's massive library, at least until South Park suggested it.
Taking Stan's word I listened to Disintegration one night on the bus ride from St Catharines to Toronto, and despite being between waking and sleeping it instantly became familiar and spoke to me through its incredible arc. It's become my go-to, after-the-club, come-down music, as I ride the red vomit comet home. So obviously I'm dead excited to see The Cure live in person; fingers crossed they play some amount of Disintegration.

Despite not going to Digital Dreams, one of my favourite sets from last year was Porter Robinson at the Monstercat showcase at Tattoo. I was moments away from going to bed and shutting down my computer when the my final twitter check discovered a live stream from inside of Tattoo. I ended up raving to the light of my computer screen for the next hour and a half, assaulting my keyboard, punching in the endless tracklist of awesomeness Porter dropped deep into the night. And although Bestival says he's doing a live set this time (see here), you can relive last year's rainy-day respite below.

Another act that I'm excited to see for the first time is Giraffage, I've only heard great things about his sets and love what I've heard specifically "All We Need" and "Lionhearted" from fellow Bestivalers Odesza and Porter Robinson, as well as "All Hands On Deck" "Impression Of You" and "So Cute!"

Then of course are those that I've already seen but know play amazing sets, Madeon, Tchami, Anna Lunoe, Shaun Frank, Thugli, Pusher and HRMXNY. Much like last year I'm sure I'll have to make tough choices as to who I see when, and bounce between stages. If the comparison to last year holds true, I can only hope the weather is more like the second day, not the first. That being said, as long it's not cancelled in some way, it will have beat both Veld and Digital Dreams. I sense there will be more names added to the list and since the price of tickets never go down, the earlier you act, the less of a financial commitment you'll have to make. I'd be surprised if word hasn't got out about how good last year was, and if the biggest headache (the ferrying) is out of the way, tickets will likely be moving quickly.

Throwback Thursday: Sandro Silva & Anjiro Rijo - Fifty What (Dem Slackers Remix)

For this week's installment in my Throwback Thursday series, it's with great pleasure that I reintroduce the world to one of the heaviest, grimiest, bass-jacking, insanity-inspiring, electro house remixes ever, courtesy Dem Slackers, who transformed Sandro Silva and Anjiro Rijo's "Fifty What," into a legitimate barn-burner. I first came across "Fifty What,"when Fake Blood dropped it way back in 2010 at the massive three room affair Digital Future at Sound Academy (which I've mentioned before). I haven't been able to spot myself in the video (below) but I'm sure I'm right up at the front losing my mind as Fake Blood absolutely massacred the crowd. The whistle in the second drop is one of my friends who became well known for that antic. I've since seen Fake Blood drop it at least two separate times, each of which the incredible atmosphere of "Fifty What" transforms the crowd into an undead army under FB's spell. Most times his crowd interaction with this track is perhaps the most awesome I've seen, miming a fisherman, casting a line and reeling us in to the back and forth rhythm of the sub-harmonics. Also in the video you may notice locals, Rynecologist and photographer, thesupermaniak.

Whether used in a set or played in full by itself on your iPod, Dem Slackers delivered a nearly perfect production. Putting most of the original elements Sandro Silva and Anjiro Rijo laid out to good use. The combination of the incredible low end and driving percussion propels the remix into an entirely new stratosphere. Both of the drops remain two of my favourites of all time, in part because of their slight yet inalienable differences; the first for its almost shotgun quality, cocking and firing out the subharmonic death knell, while the second has the additional bongos (added so ingeniously after everything but the flute is cut), it leans on a more complex and playful drum fill before the inescapable madness of the now modified drop. When first introducing my parents to electronic music they often thought much along the lines of Randy Marsh, that the drops sounded like farts, and "Fifty What" is the best example of this. My mom often referred to it as the fart song, and while the drop may induce incontinence with its brown note bassline, its overall power remains unmatched.

On this week's Bump In The Hump, I give Internet Daughter's latest original "Ignorital," its Radio Humber debut. As she was jumping on a plane for her east coast tour, hitting Halifax, St. John's and Montreal, she dropped this little power pill, as a free prescription for 10 days, before going all Martin Shkreli on us, moving "Ignorital" to the iTunes and Spotify shelves. Known for meticulously produced sounds and fastidious attention to detail, leaving no sample unturned, Internet Daughter has once again delivered a sensational track, that will heighten your senses to such a level that you'll need an artificial stimulant to be able achieve that feeling once again. Tune in live tonight from 11-12 EST, here, to get your dose of "Ignorital" to be consumed with the best new Canadian electronic music. SUPPORT INTERNET DAUGHTER: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

WRLD - Awake

Dutch producer WRLD just delivered an incredible artistic arc, upping his game, with the three track EP, Awake, released today, on Vancouver's Monstercat label. The spectacularly sparkling nu-disco/future bass feels of the title track are contrasted with the deeper, downtrodden and blues inspired, "Drowning," which in turn leads to the triumphant, reinvigorated, comeback of the final track "Discovery." Do not sleep on this incredibly cohesive and fantastically cinematic narrative. Let WRLD Awake your senses, by picking up the EP from iTunes, Bandcamp, Google Play, or streaming it on Spotify.
Unavoidably awesome playful, pitch-bent, synth riffs attack right out of the gates, firing you out of bed as though shot from a cannon. Colordrive's vocals preach the power of a double shot of espresso to the arm, inspiring even the most sleepy night owl to start the day with a bounce in their step.

The second track "Drowning," lies in stark contrast to the invigoration of "Awake." Emoting the depression of not being able to get out of bed, after a long night out. It is the overwhelming feeling of debilitating fear and petrification of never being able to achieve the same highs (of "Awake"). Ehiorobo's perfectly portray this suffocating feeling, amidst muted chords and a deluge of despondent synths.

WRLD and his masterful finale, cast this malaise aside, ushering in a new feeling of hope and optimism. The warm synths and bright inspiring piano of "Discovery," inject listeners with energy and enthusiasm for the future. Celebratory flourishes and exalted chords imbue superpowers and the feeling that anything is possible. Lifting spirits as though straight out of an 80s movie montage, it is the triumphant culmination and capstone of the simply incredible and emotive roller coaster ride that is WRLD's Awake.

Chet Porter & Autograf Live at The Hoxton

Last night, local Chet Porter and Chicago trio, Autograf graced The Hoxton with truly awesome and unique sets. As you likely know by now, I'm a big fan of Chet's productions, mixes and overall aesthetic, which he delivered on quite successfully. Despite Sigala's unexplained absence, which forced set time to change, I was lucky enough to have made it through the lines and have picked up my first drink at the same time Chet played his first track, the Hitmane Kokirimix of Juicy J's "Bandz A Make Her Dance." Lighting candles to amplify the atmosphere and mood, Chet's set cruised along, garnering several  cheers from the captivated crowd. Perhaps the most well received section of his set came relatively early on when he combined his euphoric "Over U" remix with the vocals of Blink 182's "Feelin' This" before mixing into San Holo's "Victory." I caught the video here:
I was able to compile a list of 17 tracks he played during his approximately hour long set, but was left scratching my head more than a couple times wondering what bootleg/exclusive/edit he dropped. If I can figure any of them out, I'll be sure to update this post but for now you'll just have to enjoy this playlist:  There was of course a break between the two sets to transition between the DJ decks and Autograf's three person live set, which included an electronic xylophone of sorts, surrounded by three electronic symbols, several drum pads and high-hat, kick combination. In the middle was a mixer and sampler, presumably for changing the tuning for each of the many tracks the played. And on the opposite side, was the synth. Having seen several different live set ups, from Duke Dumont, Keys N Krates and Lido, Autograf's was the most unique and seemingly complex. This only magnified the truly amazing artistry and interplay between the three performers. Throughout their set I was truly in awe of the unity and interplay between the three. There really is nothing like music being made live and the playful performance. That really is the key to the allure of live music the playful nature and showmanship of performance, making it that much easier to connect with the audience. Good music performed live beats great studio music everytime. The way Autograf brought their originals, covers and remixes to life was absolutely amazing, and although I was able to compile a large playlist of what the trio played it cannot do justice to the live versions they played.
Apparently DJ Mag Canada had a live stream of their set, I can only hope that it becomes available so that we can relive their truly futuristic performance. Highlights for me included their remix of Stevie Wonder's "Superstition," and their covers of the Soulwax remix of  Tame Impala's "Let It Happen," Coyote Kisses' "Ferrari" and Swedish House Mafia's "One." The trio showed incredible endurance playing for well over an hour, and playing a 4 or 5 track encore. I will definitely be attending their next show and cannot wait to relive the awesomeness of Autograf.
