Bump In The Hump: October 31 (Season 8, Episode 8)

Tracklist

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Humans - Going Late

Over the past month Vancouver's Humans have been authoring some sublime singles from their forthcoming album Going Late, out November 16th via Haven Sounds. Three weeks ago the sneaky genius of "Breakfast With Liz" captured my attention, and now the title track "Going Late" has me feverish for the full release. Despite its 10 minute runtime there is no boredom or malaise, it is a massive groove that just keeps growing, pleasing your ears with each awesome movement. Until just now I had been struggling to ascribe comparables to these latest releases, but I think I've found it: they're a mix of BADBADNOTGOOD and LCD Soundsystem. Hear "Going Late" opening tonight's Halloween heavy episode of Bump In The Hump and check out the other singles from the LP here.As you know today is Halloween and there is no better holiday for electronic music. Whether it be dubstep, midtempo, trap, techno or bass house, there's no shortage of spooky tracks lined up for tonight's episode. That said there is a brief reprieve from evil early on as we give a nod to aiwake's latest single "Palm City," Robert Robert's How To Save Water, and Ryan Hemsworth's stop at Velvet Underground tonight (RSVP/Tickets). Finally we close the night with a clip of my conversation with STUND, this week's guest on My Mixtape. Catch everything live from 7-9 PM EDT via Radio Humber or after the fact as cataloged on Mixcloud here.

Mall Grab - Feel Good House (Craig Knight Remix)

Over the past few months I've called house not just my home, but the heart of electronic music. There may be no better example than this multilayered track from Craig Knight, a remix of Mall Grab's "Feel Good House." Sampling the same piece as one of my favourite tracks, Nero's "Must Be The Feeling," they both pay homage to "Time To Move" from Carmen. So from 1984 and electronic music's infancy to the familiarity of Nero in the electronic music explosion to Mall Grab's 2018 house recasting in electronic music's golden age. And with that comes the onslaught of endless remixes of today. But that's not all the intrigue with this track; it started out as a Mall Grab instrumental but was officially released under the name Young Romantic and "Move," and that's actually where the album artwork is taken from. So perhaps this mix ought to be labeled as a remix of "Move," but whatever you want to call it the allure is undeniable. Filter heavy, fun, funky and freeing, the blend of piano house and disco vibes make this version really pop. It's got the power of MK and the ease of french house with just the right amount of percussion interplay. Catz 'n Dogz - The Choice (BETON Tribute To The Classics Mix)

Belgian boss BETON continues to amaze with his latest room rattling record, a remix of Catz 'n Dogz "The Choice." A giant godly groove leads the track, after the drum line opening, calling everyone to the dance-floor in a kind of ritualistic rave riot. The energy keeps leveling up as BETON constantly brings more elements to this spellbinding ceremony, often times brilliantly re-purposing the drum line. The big and beefy bass hits hypnotic levels thumping along thunderously with the crackling percussion. At the peak of "The Choice" the energy is utterly electric, as all the elements play perfectly together. The hi-hats lay right in the pocket of the enormous groove. The punctuating ticks, clicks, clacks and empty rattle punches, not only keep you entertained but draw you further into BETON's mind-control. Finally, as the title suggests this is no normal mix, but a 'tribute to the classics' which arises through Miss Bunty's soulful sermon, which ironically is about the freedom of choice, something BETON's beat off with his hypnotic production, leaving you a mere member of the masses on the dance-floor. Open your eyes, open your ears, open your heart, and get "The Choice" from Bandcamp here.FOLLOW BETON: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Patrice Rushen - Never Gonna Give You Up (Joey Negro Re-Grooved Mix)

A couple weeks ago we got a glimpse into the third edition of Joey Negro's Remixed With Love series through his take on L.T.D. "Love To The World." Today we were welcomed with another gorgeous groove in the form of a funky disco remix of Patrice Rushen's 1980 number "Never Gonna Give You Up." Another masterclass in maintaining the original's allure, while upping the oomph factor and thrusting it towards the modern dance-floor, Negro always makes note of the best riffs and hooks giving them increased exposure. The glitzy guitar lead, tempting toms, sublime string swells, buxom brass boosts and brilliant bass grooves all combine with Rushen's ravishing vocals to create a track that both feels brand new, but also utterly nostalgic and cool. And this is no simple bass boost or quantizing DJ-friendly edit, this is a musical masterpiece, letting the instruments lead their own lives, giving the whole track an undeniable soul. Stream the sensation now below and follow Joey Negro's socials for more.FOLLOW JOEY NEGRO: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Tiga & The Martinez Brothers - Blessed (Dirty Mix)

Tiga continues to use 2018 as his year of collaboration, working with the likes of Clarian, Kölsch and now longtime friends The Martinez Brothers. From the first of multiple EPs, today we were welcomed with the lead single and title track "Blessed" from forthcoming Blessed (Part 1), which is due out November 16th on Turbo Recordings. Says Tiga, the track "really sounds like Tiga and The Martinez Brothers, which makes a lot of sense if you think about it. They believe in God. I believe I can fly. As it turns out, we're both right." This kind of cheekiness is on full display in the production as well with Tiga's trademark acerbic wit appearing in the lines "I woke up blessed" and "It's not me, it's you." The track is not only hip, but hypnotic with a Svengali-like web spun through the thumping bass, rattling drums and killer club atmosphere. Be careful consuming this one, it might just be running around your head all day.FOLLOW TIGA: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Silk City ft. Dua Lipa - Electricity (The Black Madonna Remix)

Much has been made about the combination of Diplo and Mark Ronson as Silk City, and justifiably so. They're two of the world's most recognized producers, and they've capitalized on a resurgent sound in disco. Starting with "Only Can Get Better" through to their most recent and greatest commercial success "Electricity," they've pulled in some of the hottest talents: behind the scenes (Alex Metric, Nitti Gritti, Riton and others appear in the production credits), behind the mic (with Daniel Merriweather, Desiigner and Dua Lipa leading) and with remixers (Claude VonStroke and Le Sauvage so far).

Today they've added another powerhouse to the legendary list of talents around the super-group that is Silk City, with The Black Madonna taking on the aforementioned "Electricity." Putting a potent piano in the fore and letting Dua Lipa's love soaked vocals sit in this more hardened house pocket, gives an extra gravity to the already groovy production. The spark of "Electricity" still sends shivers down your back, especially so with the crackling hi-hats, as this lateral move from disco to house maintains the magic of the original. Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: DJ Sneak - Psycho Killer

For quite some time there had been whispers of an electrifying bootleg remix of Talking Heads "Psycho Killer" from OG house head DJ Sneak. Finally released Friday on No.19 Music, this nearly 7 minute acid techno odyssey does indeed follow the classic bass-line and eerily intriguing lyrics, although re-recorded by Charlie Sputnik. Remixes of iconic tracks such as this aren't rarities, they are however when you're talking about this kind of quality. Club and festival weapon alike, get "Psycho Killer" here. One week from Halloween, Bump In The Hump plays host not only to "Psycho Killer," but a number of tracks looking ahead to this weekend's Halloween themed parties. There's a handful of DnB from the Halloween Freakout Saturday at 401 Mini Indy (RSVP), one of my favourite mashups as Handlebar welcome 80s band doppelgangers (RSVP), and an epic remix from Riva Starr who headlines CODA for Creatures Of The Night (RSVP). Rory No-Mates - Hard Liquor EP

Last week saw the release of Abidanti's side project Rory No-Mates' debut EP Hard Liquor on T.E.E.D. led label Nice Age. A three track journey through lush leftfield house, it is equal parts exotic island and smooth spacewalk, all dreamscape. The title track takes little time to inject its intoxicating aura with a cool, off-kilter jazz core. Funky, freaked-out play between the chords and drum work make "Hard Liquor" a potent production, and a great opener for the EP. A darker turn, "Goldfish" wanders in waves of synths, growing ever more noxious as it progresses. No question a natural beauty, the EP really hits its stride with "Land Of Broken Dreams," a brilliant blend of the two previous tracks. Lounge vibes abound as the cool keys cruise atop the crunchy percussion, subtle samples and gripping, groove growls. Donna Missal - Keep Lying (Sapphire Adizes Remix)

Why an artist remixes a track is always an interesting endeavor. Sometimes it's to re-position it for the dance-floor, sometimes it's to focus on certain vocals or a specific feeling. The changes can be almost complete, leaving little of the original intact. Other times it can come more in the shape of a cover, maintaining much of the form, simply retelling or recasting in a more personal mode. And that's what we have here in Sapphire Adizes' remix of Donna Missal's momentous track "Keep Lying."

Like a cover, the two versions run nearly exactly the same length and mirror each-other in terms of melody and movement. However this is not just Sapphire Adizes replaying the track, he's totally claimed it for himself, using this new version as a cathartic creation in overcoming the loss of a lover. The new distorted bass, conflict ridden claps, and overall atmosphere of unease derives from an argument he had with the girl he lost; saying "my frustration manifested in the distortion of the bass, and I played that bass back to myself louder and louder, it was the sound of the words I couldn't find, and I was too angry to do anything but make it louder." Already raw and emotionally ragged, Sapphire Adizes doubles down on the intensity of the original, clearly capturing and amplifying its essence. Not just sonic power but emotional, the strength of this track is undeniably evident in personal catharsis, presumably for Donna Missal but clearly so for Sapphire Adizes. Enlightened Listening for October 19

Gotta love the life Fridays bring through all the new music that comes with it. This week's Enlightened Listening sees some new names (C.O.Z, Parametric and more) alongside some old favourites including a handful of fantastic remixes. There's the likes of TennysonHudson Mohawke, Justin Martin, GTA, TroyBoi, Dombresky and more. Stream below, find brief descriptions after the playlist and enjoy!

Tennyson - Face The Night*
Always inspired, Tennyson craft some of the coolest and most unique pop productions. Such a vibe.

Kito - Pamplemousse (ft. Hudson Mohawke)
The night Tennyson were getting us ready for. More potent percussion. Beautiful and mysterious.

Nick Monaco - River (Mija Remix)
Magical breakbeat mystery. Sublime, stunning soundscape. The voices, bass guitar and sax, just wow.

Strafe - Set It Off (Justin Martin Remix)
Cannot stop listening to this genius. The long version is the best of the 3 mixes, and it may be one of the best tracks of the year. Not sure why but I'm reminded of Erol Alkan's "Forever Dolphin Love." Its just got such a unique, undeniable allure.

EDDIE - Spiritual Contraband
The first of two mau5trap EPs in this list. The more typical of the two, in that its progressive, beautifully crafted techno. The whole EP is definitely dance-worthy, but man is the title track ever good.

Antic - Turncoat
An awesome offering from Anjunadeep. Wandering wonderment with a glitchy groove.

C.O.Z - Back & Forth
Expansive, line blurring blend of bass house/techno. Turn up the sub and let it do the dancing for you.

DJ Zinc & Chris Lorenzo - Gammy Elbow (Dnb Mixes)
I've never seen a remix package like this. Both artists offer their own DnB mixes of their collaboration. Really cool to hear Chris' version compared to Zinc's, his bass house background works wonders while Zinc's consistent quality continues to shine strong.

GTA & Tisoki - Botellas (ft. Godwonder)
Need to bring back TWRK's mix series just for this. Unreal energy, cannot help but wile out to this.

Tails & Inverness - Skeleton (ft. Nevve)
TWRK, Girl Trapz or Get Right Radio, this one has that Benzi stamp of approval as the first release on his new label Parametric. One hell of a get down with vocals that lift you back up every time.

ODESZA - Falls Remixes
TroyBoi, TOKiMONSTA, and Photay all in one remix package? Oh and that's without mentioning Kaskade and The Glitch Mob. STACKED. Jaw dropping work from TroyBoi as per usual. TOKiMONSTA applies a pop polish perfectly, and Photay freaks it out in fantastic fashion. Something for everyone.

Dombresky - Futurmastic
There is no version of Dombresky I enjoy more than the melodic, chill, groovy version. This bright bounce number just feels like the perfect finale to any set or playlist. Exceptionally easy listening.

Throwback Thursday: Phonat - Set Me Free / Learn To Recycle

Yesterday on my way home from Bump In The Hump I was listening to music on my iPod Touch (which itself is a throwback), but it has been glitching lately, leaving only a fraction of my normal music on it. This might normally be really frustrating, but thankfully there were a few gems left, one of which was Phonat's "Set Me Free," one of my earliest and favourite introductions to electronic music.I owe a lot of my introduction to electronic music to one man in particular, a childhood friend who unfortunately has grown apart from me, but had the prescience to show me the likes of Fake Blood, Louis La Roche, and of course Phonat before seemingly anyone I had met at university, let alone our tiny hometown. We knew about Benny Benassi and deadmau5 but this was different, this was weird, trippy and ever so alluring. The synths sublimely satisfying, the groove glitchy yet gorgeous, and who would've thought a guitar could be used in a track like this. But then there's the mind-bending movement and turnt transitions that hold the key to this five minute track's genius. String sweeps and swells, followed by funky grooves and electro energy, there's no pinning this track, nor Phonat, down. Which leads me to the other track I was introduced to at the same time as "Set Me Free," the lush, lurid and revolutionary "Learn To Recycle," which was also released on his debut, eponymous album.
Even more glitchy and groovy than its picturesque predecessor, "Learn To Recycle" is eminently stylish and slick, again offering up garish guitar work atop a fantastically funky, ever changing electro soundscape. Clearly the work of a capable musician, the chords and playful synth work are stunning as is the genius guitar, but it's Phonat's multi-tier track building that makes this such a sensation. He manages to give it multiple lives and identities over the course of the nearly six minute run time, constantly bursting into flames and arising out of the ashes. Without listening and just reading this description you might think it difficult to dance to, but the hardest part is avoiding your jaw on the floor.

Listening all these years later, it's no wonder Skrillex was quoted as saying "Phonat is easily the most underrated producer [...] I don't know why he isn't the biggest thing out there." These tracks still stand the test of time, sounding as fresh and fire as the day they were released. Maybe we weren't ready for him back then, but I feel that if Phonat were to be a new artist these days, he'd have one of the biggest fan bases around. That said, there's no discounting his role in inspiring many of today's artists, so we certainly have that to be thankful for. However it would be cool to have new Phonat too, as his most recent release came back in 2017. Either way I really enjoyed this trip down memory lane, and hope you did too.

Bump In The Hump: October 17 (Season 8, Episode 6)

Tracklist

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Tommie Sunshine, Haus Of Panda & Ming - Do You Remember Rave?

What a year it's been for Haus Of Panda who has unleashed more music than months, staying hot with several releases on Brooklyn Fire. Working once again with label head Tommie Sunshine, "Do You Remember Rave?" is the perfect example of Haus Of Panda's penchant for playing with genres inside a singular production. Clearly a throwback banger, it pays respect to the old school rave genres of UK hardcore, garage, breakbeat and warehouse. And tonight it'll be leading off the two hour electronic music extravaganza that is Bump In The Hump, which like this track runs the gamut of genres new and old, from ballroom and DnB to kawaii, midtempo and trap. Stream below and catch it tonight at 7.Also on the Radio Humber airwaves tonight we've got an awesome array of artists ranging from Keys N Krates and Ryan Hemsworth to Slooze and thook. Big N Slim - Killers: Vol. 1

Destructive, death-bringing, dubstep duo Big N Slim are in their element as we're smack dab in the middle of spooky season. Last week they unleashed two unhinged assassins as part of their Killers: Vol. 1 EP, based around two of the season's staples, Nightmare On Elm Street and Halloween. Oozing with unease and immediately identifiable, the two theme tunes still loom large in these maniacal, metalstep, deathcore recastings. The first, "Elm Street" welcomes you to prime-time with pulverizing putrescent punches, amidst gory, gut-churning guitar riffs, and scary samples all kept aloft by blood curdling bass. The second, and my favourite of the two, "Myers" again leans heavily on a handful of samples, effectively stabbing in Michael's trademark fashion. It is more of a slow creeper than its predecessor, but again fittingly as is Michael's menacing, unrelenting pretense. So if you're in the mood for some fear-inducing fire, grab each of the tracks free here and here, and follow Big N Slim below.FOLLOW BIG N SLIM: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Justin Timberlake - SexyBack (Scissors Remix)

I cannot count the number of JT remixes I've come across since the game changing FutureSex / LoveSounds, but none have snuck up on me the way this Scissors mix has. The little vocal samples and growing bass line in the intro are awesome, but don't necessarily hit you over the head as JT. However once you realize they are from "SexyBack," it becomes overwhelmingly obvious and is just the first example of Scissors' success in reworking the 2006 banger into a brilliant 2018 bootleg. Obviously well designed the original oomph stays strong alongside the uber catchy nostalgic vocals, but the best bits come in the Brazilian bass inspired drop, as those salacious vocal samples pair perfectly with the potent punch of the bass. The best example though comes very specifically  through the almost angelic, heavenly "aah" that immediately gets slapped down by the brooding bass. Not just a thrown together, bass boosted bootleg, this is a well crafted club killer. Get it free via Hypeddit here.

Enlightened Listening For October 12

At over three hours of music, this week's edition of Enlightened Listening runs through a couple incredible albums, funk, future bass, disco, house, bass house, bass, future and more. Some of my favourite names old and new, and some of the most banging club killers of the year. This playlist is stacked not just with heat, but with some of the best story-telling, picture-painting releases of the year. Embark on the musical journey that is this playlist and read brief descriptions of its contents below.

Harrison - Apricity
This 11 track offering is proof of the Toronto talent's mastery of full length projects, sewing several themes together through a range of buttery smooth deliveries. Like the album art, the whole thing shimmers serene.

Conro - All Eyes On Me
You would think after the few prolific years he's had recently we'd have been graced with an album, but here we are with the debut, an undeniable nine track treasure. At times it's thoughtful and restrained, others it's all out funky fire, future bass.

Moullinex ft. Georgia Anne Muldrow - Say It Slow (Wild & Free Remix)
Beautiful, brilliant groove with radiant synths; a perfect warm up piece. A musical marvel.

Humans - Breakfast With Liz
An epic always moving masterpiece. Sneakily, yet supremely satisfying.

CONFESSION (v/a) - Alchemy 3
Compilations are not normally this good, except when it comes to CONFESSION who seem to have conquered the act. Diverse levels of CONFESSION's dark sound and house's various delivery methods. Bass, filter and disco, dominate the six tracks, offering up equally excellent quality.

Purple Haze ft. James New - Fall In (Zonderling Remix)
Zonderling really have a way, and when it hits, it really works. A wildly infectious drop that just oozes all kinds of nostalgic energy, reminding me of the electro awesomeness around 2010.

Lifelike & Kris Menace - Discopolis 2.0 (Sander van Doorn Remix)
Speaking of 2010 vibes, this classic gets a reboot from one of the longest running talents and king of that time. More of a jacked up edit than anything, but it's a banger either way.

Propane - Arbusto
Can't say I've heard any Propane before, but they're clearly flammable because this one could certainly have the dance floor explode. A no nonsense banger.

Moksi - Legit
Speaking of fire on the floor, there won't be many survivors after this weapon goes off. The vocals (both sampling and rapping) really bring this monster to life.

Jack Beats - The Remedy
The fact that these two are still making the same conscionable quality they were 10 years ago is one of my favourite things about the scene. There's a pocket for them to pick and they nail it every time. Big bad, dark and dirty wobs rule as these four tracks are ready to rock plenty a party.

ABSOLUTE. - Malfunction
One of my favourite artists of the year on likely my label of the year, this EP is like icing on the cake. Five diverse yet equally excellently crafted techno club churners. Absolutely awesome atmosphere.

TroyBoi vs Pete & Bas - Do One
The first of two TroyBoi productions in back to back days. His genius will leave you agape as he flips the table at 1:28, yet manages to keep working his magic around the duo's vocal delivery.

thook - Natural Instincts
Of all the incredible sound designers on this list no one can knock this guy off his perch. Instantly engulfing, each of these five tracks whisk you away to a foreign land, sending shivers down your spine with a wild array of animated sounds. An out of this world offering.

TroyBoi - Frustrated (ft. Destiny)
Another dazzling display of TroyBoi's god-like talent. His playful progression around already awesome grooves make every production a treat. Give this guy a couple elements and he'll go off.

Madeaux - LIMBO
If you thought his creative well was dry after the unreal Burn already this year, think again. This trio of tracks further cements his status as an artist to watch. Moody masterfully crafted cool.
