Enlightened Listening for December 6

It's the end of the year and everyone's busy so I'm gonna keep the write-up to a minimum for this edition of Enlightened Listening. We open with the first single from ATTLAS' forthcoming album, before turning to two epic compilations from EMERCIVE and fabric respectively. They're followed by two of my favourite artists in Jessie Ware atop Franky Wah and another new Caribou cut. Next up Purple Disco Machine tries his hand at taking on Dua Lipa's fantastic "Don't Start Now." Staying funky, Friend Within hits Toolroom for "Space Jam" and GotSome sends us some Chicago grooves with "The Message." Finally we close with an ingenious take on Joris Voorn's "Messiah." The Knocks - Memorial Day Weekend in Ibiza Vol. VIII

For eight years now, the New York duo of B-Roc & JPatt have brought their sound to the shores of Ibiza for Memorial Day Weekend. This latest edition of The Knocks' long running mix series is chalk full of the latest grooves, with more than a couple classic vibes. Starting with A-Trak's smooth and supremely satisfying "Work It Out" before moving into the power of The Chemical Brothers "Got To Keep On," this first five minutes lays the groundwork for the rest of the mix. There's a good amount of movement within the house sphere, as the mix can bring both extended easy going island bliss and more upfront, fiery club energy. This range may be no better evidenced than in the two times Purple Disco Machine appears, extended in his remix of Fatboy Slim's "Praise You," and punchier in Yolanda Be Cool's take on "Body Funk." As far as standouts go, my ears perked up with GotSome's remix of "Heroes" and Pablo Fierro's uber cool edit of "Baianá." While this forty five minutes of fun is not out and out Baleric, it does indeed have the White Isle written all over it. Forthcoming Mashup (AC Slater & GotSome vs Out Of Cookies)

Monday I wrote about Out Of Cookies track "Who's Them Boyz" and how it reminded me of AC Slater & GotSome's "Move It Back." So I decided to see how easily I could mash up the two tracks, and surprising it came rather easily. However I'm now on my new computer (finally!) and haven't finished moving stuff over, so it remains incomplete. But I thought I'd share a preview of what's to come.

Out Of Cookies - Who's Them Boyz

The depth of the dutch scene seems to be more vast than even James Cameron's The Abyss, as we're continually introduced to rising talents like Out Of Cookies, whose latest track "Who's Them Boyz" dropped mere hour ago. It's available now for free download courtesy Ones To Watch Records. Starting with a splash of percussion and rapidly picking up intensity along with a flurry of deep, spluttering vocals, "Who's Them Boys" feels like a fresh combination of deep/bass house and jungle terror/trap styles. The way Out Of Cookies adds turbulence to the vocal samples ahead of the drop immediately reminded me of AC Slater and GotSome's "Move It Back," yet the drop itself is more reminiscent of Wiwek's machine gun style of mayhem.

Normally I don't like to project comparisons on artist like that; art is very much so a personal endeavour and making a comparison as such could imply copying or even worse thievery. However, in this case, I feel compelled to draw a connection to Wiwek, GotSome and AC Slater because of the sheer raw, neoteric nature of Out Of Cookies' sound. "Move It Back" remains one of my favourite tracks from the mighty Night Bass label and Wiwek's jungle terror stylings have inspired countless artists. Perhaps the title of Out Of Cookies' track is a reference to his influences, or maybe an allusion to his still widely unknown status. Whatever the case, it certainly seems Out Of Cookies is one to watch.
