SebastiAn & Metallica - Don't Tread On Else Matters

It doesn't get much bigger than Metallica, so fittingly, they've enlisted more than 50 artists to take on the 12 tracks from their iconic, eponymous album, which turns 30 years old on August 12th. Spanning genres and continents, the Metallica Blacklist project features all kinds of incredible and unlikely artists and their renditions of the all-time album. J Balvin and St. Vincent are among the two earliest entrants, while Rina Sawayama, Weezer, Chase & Status, Dave Gahan and Darius Rucker, to name a few, are still in store, with the full compilation dropping September 10th.

However, today is about SebastiAn, who, as far as I can tell, is the only artist to take on multiple tracks, combining "Don't Tread On Me" and "Nothing Else Matters."  Throwing a curveball right from the start, SebastiAn sets the mood with a funky opening that features "an improbable encounter of Freddie Mercury hanging out with Prince in a smoky downtown L.A. rave." Surprisingly, or perhaps not, these groovy guitar licks fit fabulously with the bristling bass and James Hetfield's gritty vocals. Even better, the groove grows fatter and funkier with additional horns bolstering the sound, pushing things further towards the orchestral final two-thirds of the track. Just as the funkiness fades, the strings and horns swell into the meat of "Don't Tread On Else Matters," the ominous and stunning electro-symphony of "Nothing Else Matters."

Enlightened Listening for September 11

You know why you're here. All this week's new music that you need to hear compiled in the playlist known as Enlightened Listening. This week's edition opens with a slice of genius from SebastiAn, a new single from New Order and perhaps my favourite band's new album RE-ANIMATOR. The playlist then turns towards house with sick stuff from Bruno Furlan, Valentino Khan and Bassani x Prayer Handz. Enlightened Listening for November 8

Keeping the write-up short and sweet for this week's Enlightened Listening. That said the playlist is just short of 40 tracks and three hours. It's bookended by epic albums from SebastiAn and Grum, and you'll find a couple EPs from the house sphere on either side of them, where Shaun Frank hits the bass, while Le Youth puts forth some progressive beauty. A couple of my favourites offer exceptional remixes, where Sinjin Hawke and Zora Jones take on Murlo's magic and ABSOLUTE. stuns with Big Wild. There's two more power duos, in 2¢'s brilliant banger "REBEL" and the latest taste of TNGHT II. While Mura Masa and slowthai are not an established duo I'm sure hoping we get more of their mix, as "Deal Wiv It" is awesome. Finally, a trio of solo singles from Skream, Eli Escobar and Jessie Ware. Enjoy!

Dr. Fresch - The Prescription 30: Bloghaus with Wongo

Yesterday Dr. Fresch dropped the 30th edition of his popular mix series, The Prescription. In honour of this milestone, he upped the dosage to two full hours and invited Wongo to help him spin some salacious bloghaus. As you might expect, it is all kinds of sick, wicked and nasty beats and bangers. Both hours feature some of the most respected names of this egregious electro era, and truly some of the most raucous remixes, fire flips and audacious originals.

Right from the get go we're greeted with one of my favourites, Jack Beats and their "Get Down." The next dozen or so tracks turn to more of the mainstays of the scene with SebastiAn, Mr. Oizo, Crookers, and the genius that is Fake Blood. Those names reappear in Wongo's mix while Hervé and Switch make multiple entries as well. With "Marina Gasolina," "Mars," "Erotic Discourse" and "Hustler" all appearing, there's no questioning the quality of choices for a true bloghaus set.
