Enlightened Listening for February 26

We've reached the final Friday of this perfectly balanced February, and that means it's time for Enlightened Listening. This week's playlist is headlined by two tremendous albums from John Tejada and Dense & Pika; the former a lighter, more explorative affair, while the latter thrives through its impenetrable sound design. There's a trio of remixes from KAYTRANADA, KUU and Claptone, who takes on a personal favourite from the 80s in Trans-X's "Living On Video." Other favourites appear as AkaMatisse makes good with his debut EP, Prospa amaze with their Rave Science Vol. 1, and Matroda goes for monumental grooves with his Insomniac offering. Finally, I would be remiss if I didn't point out the barmy bass house brilliance of ToMix's GOLD DiGGER drop, God DamnStream the playlist, organized for maximum flow, below and find each of the releases linked individually at the bottom.

Tommy Navarro - I Cried My Life Away (Superlover Remix)

While Soundcloud continues to torque everything towards their Go+ feature, recently making a high-quality stream option exclusive to said subscription (angering those who already pay for Pro Unlimited), they do still offer one quality free feature. Often padded by mixes, and more recently, a barrage of BeHoward submissions, The Upload often offers up some hidden gems. Today's scroll turned up a quality cut from Superlover, who lends his lush stylings to a 1964 classic from Tommy Navarro.

While I can't say I'm familiar with "I Cried My Life Away," and very little comes up when you Google it, I cannot shake the feeling that I've encountered it in one shape or another. I'm shocked WhoSampled doesn't have it in their library, as it seems rife for sampling, interpolating or extrapolating. Tommy Navarro's vocals have an undeniably familiar quality, especially in the longer, more emotional notes. And of course, the horn hits and their melody are just as sample-friendly. However, we're working with a remix in which the arc of the original remains largely intact as Superlover brings the track into the new century. Giving the groove a little extra electronic oomph and mixing in some movement-inducing effects, Superlover's remix has a fabulous room-filling warmth and easy-going allure. It's not likely to leave you floored, but its soul is can't miss as it infects you with its groove, which in turn guides you to the dance-floor.

Stream the Superlover remix of "I Cried My Life Away" below and get it via Bandcamp here.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Daft Punk Tribute Trifecta

As I'm sure you know by now, the seemingly eternal hope of new Daft Punk was dashed Monday as the duo announced their split. While it had been years since we shared in new Daft Punk or even a live show/DJ set, their ability to bring people together remains as strong as ever. The outpouring of emotion from fans and artists alike only further illustrated their immeasurable impact and influence. From their sampling techniques to their sound and style, it's hard to imagine the scene without Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter. And while there will certainly be a torrent of touching tributes and clout-chasing bootlegs in the coming days, I've decided to offer my farewell with three fabulous offerings from Sparkee, OVERWERK and Chilly Gonzales. Find Bump In The Hump's finale below, catch it live tonight from 7-9 EST on Radio Humber, and listen back anytime as cataloged on Mixcloud.

Colyn - Caroussel

Friday saw Dutch DJ and producer Colyn share his second EP on RÜFÜS DU SOL's Rose Avenue Records. Bridges In The Sky continues Colyn's strong start to the year, which already saw him score "Signs Of Change" as part of Afterlife's epic Unity Pt. 2. While the title track features vocals from his brother Maurits Colijn, the b-side and subject of this post, "Caroussel" is a sublime, slow-burning instrumental that, in my opinion, exemplifies Colyn's captivating creativity.

Emanating from the expanse of space, "Caroussel" is a creation event in that its arc, the birth and death of a star, leads to new life. There's great gravity and growth throughout, as the beautiful b-side spins in space, pulling all kinds of elements into its orbit. As the melodic play starts to take shape in the second half, the cool, understated keys begin to crystalize and captivate. This sparkling power takes the shape of a sun, sharing its strength through its warm resplendent rays. However, this empowering epic is ethereal, as this sun sets, leaving us cold and craving for more.

The subtle strength of "Caroussel," especially through its progressive melodic play and deft drum delivery, is exactly why I keep coming back to Colyn. It's captivating without being bellicose or overbearing. Get the golden mean of "Caroussel" below or as part of the Bridges In The Sky EP, here.

Enlightened Listening for February 19

It's time for our weekly feast of fresh beats, Enlightened Listening. This week's edition includes many of my favourite names, of which Oski and Vindata make triumphant returns. Oski offers up a trifecta of flames on Deadbeats, while Vindata deliver a double dose of divinity to Monstercat. Also dropping off a dynamic duo, Low:r impresses yet again with infectious affairs "Pixel" & "Well." Equally trustworthy, Polaris adds another star to his galactic catalogue with "Deliverance." But enough of burying the lede. Jacques Greene & Cadence Weapon have a new collab! Sharing much of the magic that made "Night Service" such a sensation, "SENNA" too feels like a phenomenon we'll be enjoying over and over and over again. Other standout tracks come from CloudNone, Diplo by way of his MMXX mix of KUU, and Bit Funk & Jason Gaffner, who share another collaborative single. Stream the playlist, curated for maximum flow, below and find each individual release linked at the bottom. Have a great weekend!

Gaspard Augé - Force Majeure

Last week, Ed Banger boss Busy P spun a DJ set as part of Brut.club's ongoing series that recently featured Vladimir Cauchemar, Jean Tonique and others. Sharing some exclusives from friends Myd, Metronomy, and SebastiAn, Pedro Winter's hour-long set is chock full of gems. While SebastiAn's take on Giorgio Moroder and Donna Summer's classic "I Feel Love" is indeed ear candy, the sonic craving I came out of this set with comes from Gaspard Augé. Recently appearing alongside Victor Le Masne for a remix of Myd and Mac DeMarco's "Moving Men," Augé is spreading the gospel of Justice, even without Xavier de Rosnay. "Force Majeure," the track in question here, could easily be passed off as a Justice production as it reeks of their fabulous and forceful electroclash/space-disco sound. Exceptional and exultant, its energy radiates triumphantly throughout, filling its listeners with an unfounded fearlessness. Like a sonic forcefield, its electro intensity instantly makes you invincible. I'm even hearing that French chemists are working on a way to synthesize it into their COVID-19 vaccine. Obviously, I'm joking with the last bit, but "Force Majeure" is no farce but rather a force to be reckoned with. Check it out below (as ripped from the set and edited by Kwaak) or catch it in the full set here.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Oliver Wickham - Indigo

Just as we have done the last two weeks, tonight's episode of Bump In The Hump begins with an extended section of progressive house and techno. While said section is largely built around mau5trap's milestone 10th edition of We Are Friends, there are back-to-back extended mixes whose releases I've been waiting for anxiously. Previously only available as part of the Anjunadeep 12 mix, Monday marked the full release of Oliver Wickham's breathtaking affair "Indigo." Sending shivers down your spine through scintillating synth sparkles that percolate out of the hazy, simmering atmosphere, this single is sure to warm listeners to the Wickham way. In fact, it's not the only time he appears in tonight's episode, as we also enjoy the ASHE remix of his Crimsen & Feyln collab, "Grey Skies." Dive into Wickham's sensational solo Anjunadeep debut below, catch it in the mix on Bump In The Hump tonight, live from 7-9 EST on Radio Humber, or after the fact as catalogued on Mixcloud here.

Enlightened Listening for February 12

It's the weekend, which means it's time to warp the week's releases in a bow with another edition of Enlightened Listening. Headlining this three and a half hour playlist is the milestone tenth edition of mau5trap's We Are Friends compilation series. It features label stalwarts ATTLAS, EDDIE and No Mana, alongside even more veteran talent in Mord Fustang, Pig&Dan, Tommy Trash and Wolfgang Gartner. And yes, deadmau5 does indeed lead the otherwise alphabetized affair. Staying with the longer form releases, MPH leaves his mark on Night Bass with a brilliant debut there, while ten artists enter into ill.Gates' Producer Dojo for a couple fists full of fire remixes. Aside from those three releases, we're left with thirteen individual tracks. Of the standout singles, I'm particularly fond of the piano in the expansive beauty of "WITHIN ME" and the chromatic resplendence of "Beyond Belief" & "Pacific." It probably doesn't need to be said, but don't miss the Jamie Jones or TSHA remixes, nor the Sleepnet or OAKK singles, if you're into stylish & immersive tracks. Dig into the new music playlist below and find each individual release linked at the bottom. Apparently, it's a long weekend, so enjoy that too!

Throwback Thursday: Christina Aguilera - Hurt (Deadmau5 Electro Mix)

For 2021's first Throwback Thursday, I figure there are few better places to start than with one of my earliest memories of 'EDM' (a term that hadn't yet been coined), this Deadmau5 Electro Mix of Christina Aguilera's "Hurt." While officially released as a JP (Jonathan Peters) & BSOD (Deadmau5 & Steve Duda) remix, I first encountered it through Nigel Newton's Galaxie Dance channel on Bell Satellite Radio, mislabeled as a Deadmau5 mix. Regardless of its accreditation, this electro offering is immediately identifiable all these years later. Matching the power and intensity of Christina's killer vocal chops, this remix is all but unhinged in its throbbing and gut-wrenching glory. Staying away from the incongruous strings and focusing more on the raw, strained emotions of "Hurt," JP & BSOD capture the overblown and overwhelmed intensity of the original. Defying the critics who called the original over the top and schmaltzy, this remix doubles down on the overwrought weepiness. And I, for one, feel this was the right choice. Spasmodic and seething, convulsive and crazed, this electro affliction now matches the impassioned ethos of its lyrical content. Its energy is inescapable, empowering its listeners and making the workouts I was doing at the time fly by. Get a shot of that fight or flight adrenaline below.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Apashe - Renaissance Remixes

Already riding a four-episode streak of Apashe remixes, Bump In The Hump will continue to climb the mountain of Renaissance Remixes tonight. One of the 2020's greatest projects, the original LP is not only a modern-day masterpiece but indeed an inspiration for these 28 new takes and countless others. Throwing caution to the wind when combining all manner of bass with a full orchestra, Apashe has shown that experimentation and risk-taking can certainly captivate. That same spirit of inventiveness appears in each of these remixes ranging from KOAN Sound and BIJOU to Vanic and Qrion. Stream each of the Renaissance Remixes below, get them from your preferred source here, and catch one of them on Bump In The Hump tonight, live from 7-9 EST on Radio Humber, or after the fact on Mixcloud.

Gettoblaster - H O U S E (ft. Missy)

Getting 2021 started right, Gettoblaster are in the middle of a tidal wave of releases. The duo dropped eight tracks this past Friday (as per Beatport), with another eight having already arrived in January. Capturing my attention with its off-kilter piano, Superfett single "H O U S E" is sure to perk your ears. Delivering a bed befitting of their Chicago/Detroit roots, Gettoblaster grab you by the hand and force you onto the dancefloor. Once there, the infectious energy of the piano overtakes your autonomy as Missy narrates your unconscious movements as you spell the magic word, "H O U S E." While there's no shortage of house tracks that extol the virtues of house, this undeniably danceable delivery does indeed match its anthemic ethos. A welcome reminder of the magic of a full dancefloor and the warmth of its community, "H O U S E" will have you closing your eyes as you imagine a return to such revelry. Get a piece of the latest from Gettoblaster here, and be sure to follow their socials for more below.

Ten City - Be Free (Emmaculate & Shannon Chambers Mix)

As last month came to a close, we were treated to a record 25 years in the making as legendary Chicago outfit Ten City shared their new single "Be Free." Presented as an Emmaculate & Shannon Chambers mix, this new Marshall Jefferson & Byron Stingily affair carries the same infectious energy and soulful allure that became Ten City's trademark. Full of heart and undeniably human, "Be Free" thrives through its organic instrumentation (strings, piano, bass guitar, brass, etc.) just as Stingily's vocals inject it with optimism. Its message is unmistakable and as auspicious as ever, making it a resplendent rallying cry. Easy to get behind both lyrically and musically, "Be Free" might just conjure up a conga line; if only that were allowed. Dig into the return of Ten City via Ultra Musichere and below.

Enlightened Listening for February 5

With the first Friday of the month comes Bandcamp day and another edition of Enlightened Listening hosted on said platform. Sorted alphabetically and ranging from dubstep & grime to disco & DnB, this week's crop is highlighted by Skream's massive third and final installment in his Unreleased Classics series. It features two of Skream's most sought after weapons and WIPs, "Lemon" and "Requestline VIP." Staying with sonic assassins, there are further hard hitters from Abstrakt Sonance, Lunice and TRENCH FOOT. However, I have to give Laces "The Ridge" and the Nothingnice & Hayz collab "Hawkeye" their own shine as their shiver-inducing quality has led them to be stuck in my head. Taking a lighter, more lush turn, Emissive, Jesse Futerman and Aeroplane, paint with an incredible array of colours, each soulful and soothing in their own sublime style. Find each individual release linked below along with a Bandcamp stream where applicable...

Abstrakt Sonance - Deja Vu (ft. Trigga)

Emissive - City Of Rooms

Jesse Futerman ft. Beverly Glenn-Copeland - Luckey

Kraak & Smaak ft. Izo FitzRoy - Twilight (Aeroplane Remix)

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: A-Trak & WEISS - Funk U

There seems to be an affinity between Alicia Myers' oft sampled "I Want To Thank You" and years ending in 1. Originally released in 1981, "I Want To Thank You" has been sampled at least 39 times (per WhoSampled) by acts ranging from Busta Rhymes & 50 Cent to Tiësto & Norman Doray. Perhaps its most popular use came a mere ten years after Alicia, as Clivillés & Cole (of C+C Music Factory) reworked it for Mariah Carey's "Make It Happen." Now twenty years later, A-Trak & WEISS have returned to that well for "Funk U." Released Friday on Fool's Gold, this latest iteration appears alongside other funky joints from Bit Funk, Pat Lok and others in tonight's all-new episode of Bump In The Hump. Stream the eminently familiar "Funk U" below, get it from your preferred outlet here, and catch on Radio Humber live from 7-9 PM EST or after the fact, as cataloged on Mixcloud, here.

Three 6 Mafia - Who Run It (Z-Dougie Flip)

Late last month, Memphis Tennessee talent Z-Dougie took on hometown heroes Three 6 Mafia and their turn of the century track, "Who Run It." Bringing his so-called "ghetto shenanigans" style to the already hard hip-hop instrumental, Z-Dougie's new drops take the now 21-year-old track from krunk to killer. While he takes a moment to bring the beat up to a boil, keeping much of the original intensity intact for the first minute, Dougie does indeed flip the script with a pair of seizure-inducing drops rife with bone-breaking bass, odious effects and guttural growls. The putrescent power of these drops is undeniable, even though we've no evidence of their exploits in a club setting. That said, it takes almost no imagination at all to picture a crowd crippled by screw-faces when these two hit them. Even without the majority of the track's intimidating lyrical content, Z-Dougie manages to maintain the menacing quality of this Memphis anthem. Instead, Z-Dougie makes good on the Mafia's mission to be more than just words, showing he's not "afraid to pop the steel." And pop off Z-Dougie does with this filthy and ferocious flip, which you can cop for free, as a birthday present to himself, via Hypeddit here.

Daft Punk - Together / Music Sounds Better With You / One More Time / Aerodynamic (FIBRE Mashup)

This weekend Alexandru Galetus, aka FIBRE, turned the clock back 14 years by releasing his take on the encore from Daft Punk's all-time classic album Alive 2007. Featuring two Thomas Bangalter tracks, "Together" and "Music Sounds Better With You," alongside "One More Time" and "Aerodynamic," this seamlessly blended eight-minute affair is both fresh and steeped in nostalgia. While the latter is obvious, the former freshness finds itself in the inclusion of "Aerodynamic" instead of the official, bonus edition's "Human After All." FIBRE forgoes the Frankenstein's monster-esque reanimation of "Human After All," instead opting to lead with "Together," which in my estimation is equally as effective in its come-together-one-last-time encore appeal. And from there, the Washington DC-based producer blasts off into French house infinity as the timeless appeal of "Music Sounds Better With You" and "One More Time" work their magic. Finally, the resplendent rushes of "Aerodynamic" deliver new notes, making this edit incredibly effective as a finale thanks to its feverish, race-against-the-clock intensity. A new twist on a classic combination, find FIBRE's fabulous free mashup below and follow his socials at the bottom.
