There seems to be an affinity between Alicia Myers' oft sampled "I Want To Thank You" and years ending in 1. Originally released in 1981, "I Want To Thank You" has been sampled at least 39 times (per WhoSampled) by acts ranging from Busta Rhymes & 50 Cent to Tiësto & Norman Doray. Perhaps its most popular use came a mere ten years after Alicia, as Clivillés & Cole (of C+C Music Factory) reworked it for Mariah Carey's "Make It Happen." Now twenty years later, A-Trak & WEISS have returned to that well for "Funk U." Released Friday on Fool's Gold, this latest iteration appears alongside other funky joints from Bit Funk, Pat Lok and others in tonight's all-new episode of Bump In The Hump. Throwback Thursday: Katy B x Geeneus x Jessie Ware - Aaliyah

At some point today I decided I'd do a Throwback Thursday post and I tossed around a couple ideas, largely centered around incredible vocal performances. I thought about Gregor Salto and Funkin Matt's remix of Mariah Carey, Syn Cole's remix of Jennifer Lopez, Anabel Englund with Lee Foss and MK (either "Electricity" or "Ghost In The System") or MK's remix of HAIM. However as I listened to the latter on YouTube, my eyes were drawn to the name Julio Bashmore which reminded me of his work with Jessie Ware and in turn I was reminded of her track with Geeneus and Katy B.

Behold 2012's utterly breath-taking "Aaliyah." I'll start by saying that even on today's third listen, this time as the two divas sang live at Wireless Festival 2013 (see here), I was nearly brought to tears by the rush of endorphins as Jessie Ware came out for the second verse. These are two of my all-time favourite vocalists, both delicate and divine while remaining ridiculously powerful despite their restrained delivery. They both spin silky and sublime webs with their bewitching warmth. And it is this incredibly captivating and catchy quality that makes Geeneus' groovy bed such can't miss magic. The bounce is clean, crisp and beautiful. It flows fantastically through each verse and chorus letting its ever expanding luxuriousness lift up each vocal. This is never better noted than in the invigorating second verse in which Ware's whisper quiet vocals clash with the electrifying clicks and bleeps. There's no hope here but to give in to the groovy gorgeousness and bow down at the feet of this trio as they work their witchcraft/wizardry. The aura of "Aaliyah" is truly transfixing. Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Daphni - Tin

Last year we saw Bwana build a track around a Taylor Swift sample for FACT Magazine's "Against The Clock." And there's no doubt strong female vocal samples are gold in electronic music. So could I interest you in one from Mariah Carey, reworked by Dan Snaith as Daphni? The mind behind Caribou takes 2005's "We Belong Together," and gives it a glorious, throbbing groove. The Mariah sample has a siren-like allure, making "Tin" an inescapable sonic web. All this about the vocals isn't to take anything from the production. Each click, clack, drum smack, scratch, is tuned and mixed brilliantly. In the end however, it's the subtle progressions and transitions, and continuous movement that makes "Tin" such a standout track in my ears. Funkin Matt - Aero (ft. Chris Lie)

Fresh off Dim Mak, Funkin Matt heads high up into the sky before violently dropping "Aero" on our heads, throroughly concussing listeners with deep future vibes. Utilizing Chris Lie's vocals much the same way he used Mariah Carey's in his remix with Gregor Salto of the classic "You're Mine (Eternal)," Funkin Matt has clearly found his magic skeleton key, unlocking awesomeness at every turn. I personally cannot get enough of Matt's productions, whether it's the incredibly bouncy "Elastic," the whirling percussion of "America," his masterful mix of Steve Aoki & Flux Pavilion's "Get Me Outta Here," the wartoad rumbling of "Mad," or my favourite of his "Foxy," Funkin Matt's future is as bright as ever. While the iTunes link leads to a 2:57 version and the Beatport a 3:31, it is my suggestion that you get a little extra Funk, what could be wrong with that?
