DJ Mehdi B2B A-Trak @ Electron 2009

Is there such thing as a Throwback Monday? How about a Mehdi Monday? Because that's what today has become, as someone sent Busy P a recording of Mehdi and A-Trak's 2009 B2B set at Electron.

The names and date alone should be enough to get you excited, and what's not to like. The selection is top notch, and the display on the decks something to behold. There's so many classic bloghaus cuts, and especially at the end a number of rap delights. The final 10 minute flourish from "Robot Rock" through "Hip Hop," "Paper Planes," "Can't Tell Me Nothing" to the double dose of King Hova is enough to leave your head spinning. Further to the physiological impact of this tremendous throwback mix, if "Pocket Piano" doesn't give you heart palpitations, you better check that you actually have one.

Transport yourself back to the late oughts and enjoy the stream below!FOLLOW A-TRAK: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Shash'U - GETDOWN #5

Montreal PWRFNK purveyor Shash'U has been sending people to the floor for years now with his "GETDOWN" series, which just grew with its fifth edition. Available via Bandcamp below, we're once again treated to an epic explosion of electro energy and a dazzling display of drums. It's a fearsome and fat funk delivery that doesn't give a fck, but rather rocks and rolls anthemically forward. And that's just par for course with Shash'U, whose gift for generating godlike productions seems undying. Find the more focused funk of "GETDOWN #4" and if you haven't checked his Street X EP, get on that now!

Jacques Greene - Live on NTS (26.04.18)

Earlier this week Jacques Greene broke his "radio silence" to share some of the material he's been collecting in the year since Feel Infinite came out. Fittingly said silence was broken on the radio, NTS to be precise. The 11 part tracklist plays host to 9 demos (his and others) along with two of his more recent releases "Nordschleife" and "Song For You." As any Jacques Greene fan should expect, the nearly 50 minute mix is indescribable genius, weaving warm and cool breezes together in a sensational storm of synth swells and palpitative percussion. His treatment of vocals (full or chopped) is always inspired, blending brilliantly with the bed while still standing strong in its own right.

But perhaps the coolest thing about this set is the visual component, rife with easter eggs. The video below shows Jacques' reflection on the screen as he navigates through art of all kinds. Conceivably you could spend hours retracing his steps, digging into the the music/fashion/anime/etc showcased - perfect for a weekend rabbit hole. Enlightened Listening for April 27

Another Friday another epic list of releases. This week I've decided to focus almost exclusively  on singles (remixes included) from my favourite names. However I've returned to Soundcloud this week to accommodate the newly launched mix series from Falcons. Catch up on this week's Enlightened Listening with the playlist below, and descriptions with asterisk indicating free download at the bottom.

Hunter Siegel - Fading (ft. Melanie?)
Just in time for his latest No Neon date, Hunter returns with his first original in forever. It's clear however that he's not lost a step with walloping wubs and killer chops. If you'll pardon the pun, the future looks dark and stormy for the dark plur himself.

Brya - Neon Lovin'
Disco funk theme engage. This is one of the two artists I wasn't familiar with prior to today, but it didn't take long for me to realize this was a hot groove and the kind of future (insert genre) I enjoy.

NOTD ft. Bea Miller - I Wanna Know (Pusher Remix)
Like Hunter it's been forever since we've had new Pusher, and like Brya it's immensely pleasing to have neon nobility back in the game. Be sure to check out his new video series "Music Minutes."

Silicon Scally - Rift
Drawn in by the Central Processing Unit label, I'm happy to have come across Scally and this EP, from which "Rift" is my favourite. It is a brilliant blend of old school electro and techno, that shows off the underlying life of overtly electronic productions. Genius.

Pete Shelley - Witness The Change (SanFranDisko Remix)*
Despite spending less than eight months in the 80s it will forever feel like home for me. The more I get exposed to it, especially through trusted sources like SanFranDisko, the more I love it. Fancy a groovy cruising track? Well look no further.

Bensley - Do It Again (ft. Armanni Reign)
When drum and bass is done right there isn't much better, especially when it has strong vocals. You can trust Bensley to bring that killer quality, as this one goes off with undeniable energy and ease.

MDK - X Buster*
The wubstep warrior and chiptune champion is back with this piece of playful power and fun funk.

Alexander Robotnick - Problèmes d'Amour (Petko Turner's 808 BD Edit)*
The Petko polish shines strong on this one. While sonically it's entirely unrelated to Silicon Scally, they both sound like machines coming to life and breaking out on the dancefloor.

Sam Smith - Pray (MK Remix)
After the success of his remix of "Money On My Mind" it should be no surprise that this follow up is just as good. Truthfully everything MK touches turns to gold, but there's just something about the way he chops Sam Smith's voice; add that to the choir and you've got some sublime, heavenly house.

Poolside - Feel Alright (Yuksek Remix)
The disco grooves just don't stop. Yuksek blesses the piano, guitar and drums, making a musical bed that you cannot sleep on but must simply bounce on all day and night.

Amtrac ft. Anabel Englund - Old Times (Skream Remix)
Talk about a trio of all stars. This jumped off the screen and into my soul, but even better blasted out the speakers. However I've fallen face down and cannot get up after those pans punched through the wubs. Skream has been making top notch tracks for years, but it feels like this last year or so he's settled into his golden age of supremely satisfying and epic electronic tracks.

Falcons - Fluidity Mixtape Vol. 1*
For years Falcons has been at the intersection of rap and electronic, especially with his bootleg remixes (see his Loosies release), but it looks like now he's really ready to showcase that skill with this Fluidity mix series, from which each individual edit/bootleg/mashup will be released a month later. Peep the tracklist here and whet your appetite, or just take my word and enjoy the awesomeness.

Alice Glass - White Lies (Pictureplane Remix)

Last week remixes of Alice Glass started to appear on Soundcloud and Youtube. The first, a DnB jawdropper from Mija (listen here), sent people into a tizzy and rightfully so. Of all the versions of Alice Glass vocals (Crystal Castles included), it may be my favourite treatment of them. Mija masterfully maintained their maudlin and moving emotional impact, while ushering in an even more unhinged and high-strung instrumental. That said, it is not the case that any movement or action in the mix is without warrant or intent; it is a carefully crafted journey that welcomes relief through its reign of terror.

Following Mija's mix came Ghostemane, King Yosef, Yves Tumor, and now today we're treated to Paul White and Pictureplane. The latter caught my ear after the piano punched through the electro enclosure. Pictureplane has keyed in on Glass' crystal clear vocals in the chorus, recasting them in a more angelic, authoritative way, as though washing away the worry of telling "White Lies." Like the whole of Glass' debut solo EP, there's a strength and catharsis with telling the truth, shaking off the shackles of the past, picking yourself up and moving forward. And if there's anything that stands out in this remix, it's the piano and its propulsive, sure-striding nature. I envision Glass walking out of pile of ashes, reborn like a phoenix. And for that I'm awestruck with this mix, waiting for the official EP release, Friday the 27th. While the others are all on Soundcloud we still wait for Chelsea Wolfe's final addition.
Alice is set to tour with Pictureplane and Zola Jesus, see their schedule here, and if you're in Toronto see them at Mod Club, May 11th (RSVP/Tickets).

Greg Wilson - Credit To The Edit 3

When it comes to disco edits, there aren't many more trustworthy names than Greg Wilson. Not only are his yearly "20 Choice Edits And Reworks" lists of undeniable quality, but his own edits offer up the same strength of free flowing fun and genius groove work. This past Friday we were treated to a ten-pack compilation, the third in the Credit To The Edit series, and first since 2009. Like the two previous installations, which hosted exceptional edits of 1gnition, Roxy Music, Yello, Chic and others, this too brings electro- and italo-disco to the likes of Psychemagik, The Chakachas, and more. The first track "Glad To Know You" is perhaps a DJ's greatest friend, an edit of an edit, from the always excellent Todd Terje; a perfect opener, not just for the compilation but indeed a party. The party picks up and threatens to go all night with the nonstop playfulness of "Cocaine Blues." Things only get bigger and more eventful with "Hold On" as the acid slowly eats away at the classic grooves. "Jungle Fever" further fills the fun quota with a sublime slow burner with plenty of brass breadth. Things then get twisted with the funky filter fest that is "Change The Beat." And this really kicks off the more electronic tilted second half of the release.

"Mink And Shoes" is rife with wicked and wild wobbles that is sure to infect everyone it comes in contact with its alien appeal. We stay high in the sky for "Magic Fly" which offers up more interstellar ecstasy, as Wilson and Peza punch up the groove of the classic Space track. The following track "Bad Times" opposes the previous instrumental perfectly, offering up the incredible performance of Captain Rapp on top of a more full foundation than the already ingenious original. The penultimate track "Crystal World" is about as fun, funky and cool as it gets. The drums, bass, strings, and horns all ooze with an exceptional energy and groove. And finally "Wonky Baseline Disco Banger" is exactly what disco edits are all about, it is just surefire fun, that shirks all pop music norms and delivers a dance all day groove.

After nearly a decade without a Credit To The Edit package, and disco undeniably on the rise, this couldn't have come at a better time. Be sure to follow Greg Wilson and pick up the album via iTunes.

AC Slater - Outsiders Remixed Pt. 2

After playing Coachella last weekend, and ahead of his set again this Saturday (2:30 local in the Sahara Tent), Night Bass boss AC Slater just unleashed his second set of remixes from his Outsiders album. As usual the lineup is stacked with the likes of Jack Beats, Taiki Nulight, Phlegmatic Dogs and Kastle. If you're in the market for brash bass house tracks look no further. Stream/download here.

Jack Beats take on "Another You" will leave you seeing double, and maybe even keeling over seasick, as their old-school waves roll through your soul. Taiki Nulight leans into Scruffizer's vocals, punches up some piano and knocks up the noxious quality of the savage synth already present in "All About Paper." Phlegmatic Dogs follow that up with a banging beat that wobs for days, delivering the most dance ready track of the EP. Kastle then caps the fire foursome with a gorgeous garage-esque recasting of "Come Back," that like the prior two tracks mixes classic and cool rave feels with the callous and capricious bass house blitz. And truly this is the genius of Night Bass, they seem to have found the perfect balance of boundary pushing bass and smooth, satisfying club sounds.

Full Interview with Allan Eggert

This past weekend I had to opportunity to speak with one of Canada's best kept secrets: the enigmatic and multi-talented, Allan Eggert. He's the man behind both Kryojen and KVIII (a divide we discuss in the interview), as well as the label manager behind newly formed Curvv Music. Full interview below.
Over the course of our conversation we tackled the following topics: his introduction to production, his background with piano among other instruments, the origin of Curvv and its direction, the success of KVIII's Masterclass track "Silence" and the 'acoustic house' style it spurred, and of course his upcoming episode of My Mixtape, which falls under the KVIII moniker. The episode hits the Radio Humber airwaves at 11 PM EDT Saturday April 21st, and is hosted with full tracklist and on this blog.

Bump In The Hump: April 18 (Season 7, Episode 28)

Tracklist

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Kryojen - Hollow

Last week I lauded the luxury hosting Bump In The Hump offers, it allows me to connect with artists of all kinds, and again I'm feeling that, while focusing a little more on My Mixtape. The spin-off guest mix show allows those connections to flourish, while showcasing their own music (forthcoming and otherwise), their DJing skills and their taste. After having the eclectic creations of Chromak last week, I welcome the enigmatic Allan Eggert for a mix. But who is Allan? He is both KVIII and Kryojen, a divide he'll explain in my conversation with him, a clip of which you'll hear tonight, with the full version available tomorrow. Alongside his production roles, he's also label manager of the newly formed Curvv Music. And while I'm teasing this episode with their first release, a Kryojen track, it's in fact the KVIII moniker who will be taking us through My Mixtape this Saturday at 11 PM EDT. Stream "Hollow" below. While we wrap up the night with "Hollow" and a clip of the interview, the rest of episode is built heavily around house, trance, and techno. We look ahead to a number of exciting events this weekend, and enjoy a strong sampling of many of our favourite artists from over the years of Bump In The Hump. As always this is a one of a kind show; no replays, only new music. Listen live from 7-9 PM EDT via Radio Humber, and find it after the fact on Mixcloud here.

A-Trak - Sunday Afternoon Mix for The Do-Over

Coachella is still on the mind of many, with good reason, and we're still reaping the benefits of opening weekend. A-Trak was everywhere: he crashed his brother's interview on the live stream pre-Chromeo set, DJ'ed for Brockhampton, was behind the scenes for BeyoncĂ© (read his commentary here), then played a set at The Ace Hotel & Swim Club Sunday. The latter as part of The Do-Over's Desert Sundays party (also happening next weekend), and in a rare act he recorded the set, see below.First off, it's A-Trak so obviously it's awesome, not just in selection but mixing. Second, it's tagged disco, and it indeed delivers. Third, it's got Chromeo, Steely Dan, Talking Heads, and that's just in the first half hour. Not enough for you? Perhaps Folamour's "The Power And The Blessing Of Unity," Sophie Lloyd's "Calling Out," or Aretha Franklin's "Jump To It" will get you into the groove.

Of the strings that ties the mix together perhaps Purple Disco Machine is the most prominent. It was his mix of "Juice" in the opening, his original production "Move Or Not" (which samples "Rappers Delight") shortly after, and then his collab with Aeroplane, "Sambal" about a third of the way in.

But my favourite part? That's a tough question. The triple shot from Justice's "Pleasure" to Oliver and Thee Mike B's remix of Blondie's "Heart Of Glass" and Parliament's "Flash Light" is bloody brilliant. The fact that it's followed by an unidentified track which may be new Chromeo, is just a little too much to take. Then again I'm a sucker for The Pointer Sister's "Automatic," and the move to Anderson .Paak's "Am I Wrong" is wild. Oh and how about the section from Marcus Marr, Tiger & Woods, Talking Heads, Luke & Jimmy to Steely Dan? You quite simply cannot go wrong with this mix. Find the tracklist here.

Daft Punk ft. Panda Bear - Doin' It Right (FEEDSON & Invision Remix)

I feel like every time I see a remix of Daft Punk I have to click on it. 1) Because it's Daft Punk, arguably one of the most important acts in dance music's history and 2) to see whether this mix is going to make people lose their minds (either in "OMG it actually works!" or "How dare you do this to a perfect creation?!?"). Now I'm not one to waste time lambasting an awful production, so obviously this remix from Chile works, and while you could still complain that it's not the original, it's a strong reshuffling.

There's no arguing about the qualities of Daft Punk and Panda Bear's "Doin' It Right," and FEEDSON and Invision have done it service by keeping just enough of its core intact, while offering up a more driving club beat. The drums deliver more oomph and movement, while the wobbling and dazzling dancy synth additions make for even more magic. And it's not just that kind of big picture recasting, they've even added a vinyl-esque static crackle that just works so well with the warmth at the heart of Daft Punk's productions. This is clearly not a lazy club edit, but a thoughtful take on a classic, worthy of commendation. FEEDSON and Invision have indeed done it right. HAIM - You Never Knew (Jim-E Stack Remix)

Last night I lay in bed watching HAIM perform on the Coachella mainstage before Beyonce shut things down. My love for the sisters is well documented, both on this blog and my Twitter feed, but it was sometime in the last month or so that I came across the fact that Jim-E Stack was credited as playing the keyboard on Something To Tell You. My love for Jim-E is also well documented ("Deadstream" was #7 in my countdown last year) and only further flourished with his latest original, "Somebody," which is beyond gorgeous. So today when I came across a new Jim-E post on Soundcloud I was instantly excited, exponentially so when I heard Danielle's vocals.

While at first it took me a while to get into HAIM's more folk/country tinged tunes, of which "You Never Knew" is one, it is one of my favourite songs on the album. That said, hearing this more electronic tilt totally makes sense. Part of what makes the original so strong is the vocals, harmonies and otherwise, and again they are used to perfection here. The same can be said for the guitars, as they're only bolstered in a way that seemingly blends both the best bits from "Somebody" and "Deadstream." This remix is pure refined and restrained beauty and brilliance, and just another reason to jump on the Jim-E Stack bandwagon.. At the moment the track only seems be available below and on Youtube.FOLLOW HAIM: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Enlightened Listening for April 13

Here we are again, another fantastic Friday of releases, even though it's the unlucky 13th. We've been treated to a tremendous selection with big names like Joker and Destructo; personal favourites like Robotaki and Coucheron; and those that I'd never heard Karim Sahraoui and Shmuck The Loyal. As always there's a heap of house, some fun funk, and electronic music of all kinds. This Friday also marks the release of ABSOLUTE.'s Harmony EP, but I've already written about that here. So buckle in for another edition of Enlightened Listening, enjoy the playlist, and read brief descriptions below.

DJ Seinfeld - Sakura
Despite his name, this is no joke. Absolutely massive atmosphere throughout. An incredible mixture of world influenced electronic, house and techno. Each and every track is a wicked weapon, but my favourites are "Sakura" and "Battery" for the strong sweeps and delectable drums respectively.

Chrome Sparks - Chrome Sparks
The albums coming out this year are proof that this format is not dead. The lead track "Rocket" propels you into Chrome Sparks' world, and his genius takes over from there. It has a cooly crafted future feel, with a wonderful mixture of laidback lush, bounding bass and strong storytelling.

Karim Sahraoui - Plenitude
Excuse my ignorance for not knowing Karim before, but I'm definitely on-board now. This is the kind of long-form deep house that I absolutely love: simple, subtle and strong. "Born Again" is sheer brilliance. It swings, slaps and brings a smile to my soul, especially as the piano creeps in in the second half. I would not be surprised if my infatuation with it lasts through the summer or longer.

Deetron - Choose Me (ft. Steve Spacek)
Walloping warm house, with just the right vocal breeze. Another aspirational summer tune.

Fehrplay - Malnati
Anjunabeats never disappoints, and Fehrplay's latest is fulsome fire. I'm starting to notice a trend in my selections today (and most days), I'm searching for feel good tracks. And this one is rapturous.

Joker - Anamorphic
The trend of feel good may die here, but this is one of the biggest and best tracks I've heard in a long, long time. On par with his undying classic, "Tron," this one roars to life, proving dubstep is not dead. Rather I think it'll inspire many more to take to its wobbling waves of wonderment. A truly epic creation.

Oliver ft. Sam Sparro - Last Forever (Destructo Remix)
Whereas the Lifelike version kept closer to the original, with his french house vibe, Destructo props the tempo up a touch and makes it more friendly for the North American DJ crowd. An oomph-ridden edit.

Robotaki - Science
We've heard all but two of the tracks already, and were already wowed. The intro, "Trial" welcomes us to the bubbling lab where this all takes place, with the conclusion, "Satisfied," sending us off in spectacular fashion. And perhaps that's the best way to describe this EP: fashionable, chic and swank.

Kideko - Good Thing
Get me that GIF of the woman on the floor grabbing for the bed (here). It takes less than 5 seconds for me to assume that position after pressing play. So good it hurts. Holy funky grooves Batman!

Will Clarke - Take A Seat
Did I jump the gun on both the life alert and holy Batman references? Probably should've saved them for the wobs on this one. It shouldn't be called "Take A Seat" but rather "Fall To The Floor;" that's what this freaked-out track will cause you to do. Make sure you're near a soft surface for this one.

Shmuck The Loyal - Not Alone
A new name to me, but a sound that will always be close to my heart. Electronic music for me will always be about the apocalyptic battle between humans and machines, and this one nails it.

Lemaitre - Machine (Coucheron Remix)
Whereas the above sees the machine beat out humanity, Coucheron has calmly quelled the uprising and enslaved technology. Funky flourishes and rips, as I'm taken back to seeing Lemaitre and Coucheron on the now fateful date of November 8th 2016.

Full Interview with Chromak

This past weekend I welcomed Chromak to the Radio Humber studios for an interview. Listen below. Topics included: the essence of the Chromak project, the story behind picking up the guitar and GarageBand, his start making hip hop beats, the evolution to remixes, in whatever genre he felt, that unwillingness to stick to one genre, the pop sensibilities throughout, working with vocalists for originals, drawing inspiration from K-pop, his future live performances, and of course his episode of My Mixtape.

His episode of My Mixtape hits the airwaves at 11 PM EDT, Saturday April 14th.

Bump In The Hump: April 11 (Season 7, Episode 27)

Tracklist

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Chromak - Dreaming

One of the coolest things about running Bump In The Hump is discovering and connecting with artists of all kinds. Electronic music is incredibly accessible and allows seemingly infinite expression. Whether you're building a beat entirely for your own enjoyment or pushing to produce the next pop sensation, it's achievable with minimal investment. And it's my pleasure to be able to bring both sides of that coin to the airwaves. Somehow Hamilton's Chromak has been able to land the coin on its side, making whatever kind of beats he wants while imbuing them with a pop sensibility. You can quite clearly hear that in his catalog, and it's made even more explicit in the interview I did with him this weekend. That's why I'm teasing this episode with his latest track "Dreaming," which you'll also hear in his episode of My Mixtape. A clip of our conversation closes out tonight's episode, and I'll post the full version tomorrow. In the same vein as Chromak's output, this week's episode of Bump In The Hump also offers an eclectic mix of music. There's a deluge of dubstep, trap, house, and future bass, and believe it or not, two orchestral tracks: from Deadmau5 and Skratch Bastid. The action starts live at 7 PM EDT on Radio Humber, and can be found after the fact via Mixcloud here.

ABSOLUTE. - Harmony

Going back to the first week of the year, and Tiga's New Names Mix for Pete Tong, it was clear Turbo had some serious power up its sleeves. Alongside the bump and grind genius of BETON's "Directions" there was further fire forthcoming on Turbo. I'm talking here about ABSOLUTE., and the two tracks we heard in the above-mentioned mix. This Friday marks the release of "Harmony" and "Not Tonight" along with a remix of the latter, from veteran Vakkuum. Pre-order the EP here and stream below. The lead track "Harmony" is pure power and pomp. Its breaky percussion sets up the sensational, spiraling and spacious synth perfectly. The consummate coordination makes it ever so magically satisfying, especially as it ushers in and out elements and layers. It is as though ABSOLUTE. has harnessed the heft of heaven to build this brilliant banger.

"Not Tonight" takes a more slowed left-field approach, although imbued with the same warmth, power and propulsive percussion. As its name suggests it's also darker, and more menacing than its predecessor. But then comes Vakkuum, who takes the tempo back up a notch, and flips the switch back to bright and bouncy. His recast chords are cool and compelling.  Whereas the original offers a desolate landscape, Vakkuum eviscerates that and energizes the floor.

All in all this EP exemplifies not only Turbo's terrific taste, but also their strength in mixing techno and house together. Be sure to follow ABSOLUTE. for more magic and grab the EP Friday, here.

Wuki - Chop It (Blvk Sheep Remix)

Find something firm to grab on to, you're about to get weak in the knees. Over the past 11 months Wuki has been releasing brain-battering, bass-blasters through Wukileaks. While most have been DJ tools, bootlegs and collabs, the most recent was an original called "Chop It" with vocals from Bri Berlay. Today that track got kicked up a notch, as it appropriately got chopped and screwed by Blvk Sheep. Making the original even more raucous and rave worthy seems a tall task, but Blvk Sheep has delivered. It is absolute madness. The whole thing rips harder than a zombie tearing at the flesh of an extra on The Walking Dead, burns brighter than a supernova, and marches more menacingly than Jack Torrance through the maze at the end of The Shining. It is club weaponry amplified to the nth degree. Normally I'd say don't sleep, but it's so intense its likely woken the dead. Download free here.FOLLOW WUKI: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER
