Enlightened Listening for April 30

It's new music Friday, and it seems like the theme this week was LPs. With more than a handful of albums we've been building towards dropping today, only four made the cut for this week's Enlightened Listening, as they go deeper than their singles. Each of Tor, Rochelle Jordan, Moullinex and Cadence Weapon captured the quality of the long-form release, taking listeners on diverse yet equally compelling journeys. Aside from the albums, the playlist opens with a fist full of funky stuff, including remixes from Pat Lok and the dynamic duo Breakbot & Irfane. Two Toronto talents follow that, as Frustra and The Kount hit us in the feels. After Tor's Oasis Sky comes a trio of remixes of Robotaki, each seemingly better than the next. Finally, bookending the last two LPs are two strong singles in the nasty Night Bass garage groover, Badger's "Give It To Me" and Prospa's rapturous "WANT NEED LOVE." Enjoy!

Bump In The Hump: April 28 (Season 9, Episode 69)

Tracklist

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Yurie - Love The Way You

Continuing to pair Bump In The Hump with its sister show, My Mixtape, tonight's all-new episode features the kind of screwface-inducing tunes that are the very essence of this week's guest mixer, LNDN. In fact, the track I've selected as tonight's sneak peek comes from one of LNDN's most recent collaborators, Yurie. Further to this theme, Yurie's BOMB ASS HOUSE track "Love The Way You" immediately follows another Vancouver talent and LNDN collaborator, XPNSV TASTE. These two close out the show with a bang and set up a clip of my conversation with Lynden Grosso, aka LNDN. If that isn't enough, you can see LNDN live on Twitch via Slightly Intoxicated Events' Wonderful Wednesdays, which goes live at 8 PM EDT, with LNDN closing things down at midnight EDT/9 PM PDT.

Catch another high octane episode of Bump In The Hump live, from 7-9 PM EDT on Radio Humber, or after the fact via Mixcloud. Then catch My Mixtape featuring LNDN Saturday, May 1st at 11 PM EDT.

Enlightened Listening for April 23

Another week brings another edition of Enlightened Listening. It seems the theme this week is breaks, as the first five releases feature said percussion prominently. More drum mastery follows as Squarepusher and Pusher blast off brilliantly. A bit of reset occurs in the middle as The Chemical Brothers wow with epic single, "The Darkness That You Fear." Riding that reset, a couple exceptional EPs follow as Amtrac & The Juan Maclean combine for Grit and Recondite delivers Bird to Afterlife. Turning to house, Vibrancy shares their sensational second edition of the Exhibits compilation series. Bringing in a bit of soul, Shift K3Y & Tinashe propel the playlist into divine disco vibes from Horse Meat Disco and Prins Thomas. Finally, we close with a gorgeous, groovy joint from Great Good Fine Ok. Stream the weekly new music playlist below, and find each individual release linked at the bottom.

Bicep - Siena / Meli (I) / Light

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: John Rolodex - Pentium

As you hopefully know by now, My Mixtape is back with a new run of guest mixes. Of course, that impacts Bump In The Hump in that each episode now closes with a clip of my conversation with that week's guest. This week, we hand over the My Mixtape turntables to Kelmo, who delivers an hour of DnB, including several IDs and a couple of remixed deadmau5 classics among a fistful of Toronto talent. Setting the scene for our conversation, Bump In The Hump closes its musical portion with a trio of driving, percussive cuts including the genius of John Rolodex's "Pentium." A brilliant blend of classic jungle breaks and gripping, computer power, the lead track from Machinist Music's Prototypes EP fits perfectly in the final flourish of tonight's all-new of Bump In The Hump. It's Friday and I'm busy as all hell, but that doesn't mean I can skip the weekly tradition of Enlightened Listening. Stream the playlist below and find each of the individual releases linked at the bottom.

Full, Uncut Interview with Frustra

Recorded April 8th on Zoom, this is my full conversation with Landan Brawley, aka Frustra. Topics included: our final shows pre-pandemic, the time the pandemic provided for the rebirth and release of his Second Lives LP, the need for physical release while in lockdown, the move to melodic productions while clubs remain closed, how our listening habits have changed in lockdown, the rise of virtual festivals/shows, finding his balance between funky, disco house and tough, melodic techno, and finally, what the future holds for Frustra, a fair amount of which you can hear in his second episode of My Mixtape which premieres Saturday, April 17th at 11 PM EDT on Radio Humber. Bump In The Hump: April 14 (Season 9, Episode 67)

Tracklist

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: MDK & meganeko - Supercharge

After last week's monotone, all-house episode of Bump In The Hump, we're all but doing away with that this week as we ride a roller coaster of bass. An up and down affair that features all kinds of funk and fire, sometimes together; the theme of tonight's all-new episode may be best exemplified in MDK & meganeko's fabulous and fierce collaboration, "Supercharge." Bristling with electricity, it threatens to explode at any moment, keeping you on the edge of your seat as the killer chiptune, electro and dubstep energies combine brilliantly. While a wicked ride in itself, "Supercharge" is but a piece in the epic audio odyssey that is tonight's Bump In The Hump, one that, despite diverging from the heart of house, sets up a clip of my conversation with Frustra, this week's guest on My Mixtape, with the latest from Jayda G and Turbo Recordings. Stream "Supercharge" below, get it here and catch it as part of Bump In The Hump, live tonight from 7-9 PM EDT on Radio Humber, or after the fact on Mixcloud.

My Mixtape Returns This Week!

It's been more than seven months since we had our last new episode of My Mixtape, but that's about to change as Frustra has an all-new hour set for this Saturday at 11 PM EDT. In fact, it's fairly serendipitous that this new season of My Mixtape starts with Frustra as my last show, pre-pandemic, was with him and Maddmon at The Beaver.

As with previous editions of My Mixtape, I'll be pairing most episodes with my interview with the guest, and that's the case this week with Frustra as we discuss the impact of the pandemic on his production and desire to DJ and where we go from here.

With last season leading us into the pandemic, perhaps this season will lead us out of it and back into the clubs. Regardless, we'll do our best to replicate the club experience with each of these new episodes of My Mixtape, premiering every Saturday at 11 PM EDT, live on Radio Humber, with the download link appearing simultaneously on Enlightenment For Your Ears. Find all previous episodes of My Mixtape on Mixcloud here and stay tuned to this blog and my socials for more.

Enlightened Listening for April 9

Another Friday means another edition of Enlightened Listening. This week's new music playlist opens with CFCF's incredible ride, memoryland, whose lead single, "Life Is Perfecto," has been one of my favourite tracks of the year so far. Immediately following that are a couple of captivating singles from Tor and Overmono, the former being gentle, gorgeous and organic, while the latter launches our playlist into space. Staying in the stars, Booka Shade and Bontan come together for galactic cruiser, St. Kilda Nights. Bringing in some tension, Solomun shows off his deft touch with "The Center Will Not Hold."

Breaking the levy, we get a couple exhilarating offerings from Nikki Nair and Dropwizz, both of whom delivers a unique, inspired rush. Taking us into our final section of house/disco/pop, I've selected the closing cut from OCULA's Closer To The Edge EP, "Nevermore," a beautiful, groovy and uplifting affair. Working with grooves for the first time in a while, ANGELZ samples some CeeLo for fabulous "Inspheration." While it's not a cover of the same-named song from the Jungle Book as I'd hoped, Hammer's I Wanna Be Like You does indeed deliver a couple instances of dance-ready nostalgia. Finally, closing out the playlist is another pair of singles, in our first taste of Jayda G's forthcoming DJ-Kicks LP, ahead of the fabulous and funky finale from Petticoat.

Bump In The Hump: April 7 (Season 9, Episode 66)

Tracklist

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Burgundy - Morning Star

The last couple of weeks, I've opened Bump In The Hump by talking about house. About how it's the lifeblood of electronic music, about how there's an hour here or a half-hour there. Well, this week that's all we've got: two solid hours of house; deep, progressive, bass and otherwise. Starting and ending with so-called organic house, tonight's all-new episode opens with an apt affair from Toronto's Thomas Burgos, aka Burgundy. "Morning Star" shines sublime, slowly waking us to its warmth and beauty. Its equally gentle and gorgeous soundscape places you shoreside, stretching and soaking up the sun's rays, empowering you for the day ahead. Here it plays perfectly as we embark on a journey through all things house. Stream the Mirrors release below, get it here, and catch it on Bump In The Hump, live tonight from 7-9 EDT on Radio Humber, or after the fact, as cataloged on Mixcloud here.

Enlightened Listening for April 2

It's the first Friday of the month, and while it's a holiday, it's still Bandcamp Friday. Once again, we're hosting our weekly new music playlist Enlightened Listening on said platform. However, there is a bit of a change this month. One of my complaints with Bandcamp is the lack of ability to build playlists. Obviously, I wasn't the only one who noticed this glaring omission as Lon Beshiri built BNDCMPR, a new playlist platform for Bandcamp. While it's still a bit cumbersome, I was able to build a playlist for this week's Enlightened Listening. Find it here. Also cataloged alphabetically, find each individual release linked below. There's an incredible new album from Iglooghost, a flurry of fabulous edits from LUXXURY, an exhilarating freebie from Jelani and more! Dig in below and enjoy!

dj genderfluid - the loft remixes

Floret Loret - Undulations

Iglooghost - Lei Line Eon

Jelani - Arcane Interval

KOAN Sound - Chronos

LUXXURY - EDITS VOL. 3

Nicky Elisabeth - Celeste

Photonz - Saturn

The Shapeshifters - You Ain't Love (ft. Teni Tinks)
