Bump In The Hump: January 31 (Season 7, Episode 17)

Tracklist

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: SUBstance - Gunshot

Earlier this month we had Sherbrooke bass boys Wraz and Motus deliver their episode of My Mixtape (here), and today we get another taste of the tremendous talent in that Eastern Township. Like his killer collabs in that mix, "Gunshot" again showcases SUBstance's strong sound design and potent production abilities. The drum work is dope, setting the scene for scary sub-bass swells. While it may be a freebie, as thanks for 1500 Soundcloud followers, there's no denying its fearsome quality. Get locked and loaded for tonight's episode of Bump In The Hump with the download via ToneDen, here. You can be sure to find this track as part of the fire finale tonight, which also includes a new Motus track as well as some hard psy-trance, DnB, trap and grime. And as continues to be the case, our Canadians are diving further into the disco and funk feels with another dose of Spacedisco, Chromeo and some surreal Robotaki. We also look ahead to four shows happening this weekend, featuring Frustra, MC Flipside, Above & Beyond, and Chris Lake. Capping the two hours comes a clip of my interview with Bill Slinnton, whose guest mix airs Saturday night at 11.

Finally, don't forget Bump In The Hump has a new time slot, moving back an hour to 7 PM. Otherwise everything remains the same. Stream live via Radio Humber (here) and listen back via Mixcloud, here.

Mohican Sun - Cold Earth EP

Whoever Mohican Sun is/are, they're definitely off to an incredible start to the year, gearing up for their Cold Earth EP to drop February 9th. I say whoever they are because despite being around since at least September 2016, we still don't know much about them. We know they're affiliated with Dawn Wall, if only through their similar masks, and of course their label, Integral Records. A UKF article Who The Hell Is Mohican Sun? got a quote from Integral's head honcho saying "Mohican Sun is a new member of the tribe. A new combination of producers including original members of the camp."

But as I say, whoever they are, they are off to a blazing start offering up four of the five tracks from Cold Earth, following today's DJ Mag premiere of "Calgary." Stream below and pre-order via Intergral Records, where it's available a week early, otherwise wait and grab via Beatport here. The opening track "Don't Wait" strikes me as a raucous, rolling liquid version of SBTRKT, especially as the vocals add even further emotional depth to the already inciting organic elements. The title track again invokes intense power with its enveloping atmosphere and smart use of effects to further fill the strong soundscape. As unleashed on Rene LaVice's BBC Radio One show, "Spiralled" is supremely strapping, ushering in some unyielding waves of endorphins with its rushes of robust bass wallops. The most recent, and penultimate track of the EP, "Calgary" conjures up crystal clear imagery of one of the coldest urban centers on the planet. Its glassy glaze and chilling atmosphere is the fantastic yet freezing finale. And now I say finale, because "Calgary" will be the end of the EP on its vinyl release, with "Living This Way" coming as a digital bonus. There is a two minute preview on Intergral Records release page here, which sees it continue this trend of chilling liquid DnB. And if you're a fan of DnB then be sure to grab Cold Earth, which certainly does not disappoint.

MEMBA - Middle Man (ft. Asher Don)

New York duo MEMBA has been making waves over the last while with wildly unique blends of trap, hip hop, future bass, R&B, and world dance beats. And while their place in genres may be up for debate, their production ability is not. Even if you were to click around aimlessly through their Soundcloud catalog, you'd almost instantly realize that these two are changing the game with stunningly crisp and otherworldly sounds. It was this craftsmanship that caught my attention with literally the first note of their latest production, "Middle Man" featuring Asher Don. The swooping/scooping synth is scary satisfying and alluring, especially as its countered by the teasing top line. This mixture makes me imagine a cross between SBTRKT and Wendy Carlos. Its ebbing and flowing waves splash around my head like swells of psychedelic hallucinations causing me to react like the music video. It's impossible not to get sucked up this sublime mixture of sounds and lurid lyrics. Add Asher Don's attack and you've got a track that is sure to capture the consciousness of all that come into its contact. As if this magical mixture were not enough to have your heart palpitating it is available for free via ToneDen, here.FOLLOW MEMBA: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Extended List of Grammy Predictions

Just for fun I'm making an extended list of Grammy predictions/bets, to go with those I already did for the categories relevant to this blog (read here). In order to save time I'm only going to list the category and who I believe will win, and in some cases who I think should win. I will be skipping the categories I know nothing about or have no taste for. There's dozens of places to find the full list of nominees and eventual winners, and while nothing beats the official source I'm not a fan of their website and generally choose to use Wikipedia here. I'll be live tweeting here as I watch both the pre-ceremony telecast (streamed via www.grammy.com) and CBS broadcast late via PVR.

Beyond Sessions 006 - Eights Everywhere

Utah based DJ and producer Eights Everywhere has been silent for several months after dropping off three tracks and mix, live from LUN, last April and May. It would seem this is an action he is set to repeat, dropping off another massive mix, which includes two unreleased and forthcoming productions.
Working with the titanic techno grooves of Adam Beyer, Tale Of Us and others, Eights Everywhere conjures up club vibes with an endless allure. It is at times overwrought and sonically singeing with an acid onslaught, while managing to never feel overbearing or suffocating. And that's really the key to not just a good tune, but a good mix. It ought to approach the feeling of redlining, as though the walls of sound are about to cave in on you. It should nearly drive you mad, while at the final second loosening its grip, letting you breathe. It is this dynamic movement that is not just necessary, but also present throughout this mix. In my ears, the section from "Oralage" to Abstract Division's remix of "Alpha Magnitude" and then "Elevant" shows this best. However I will say that the opening 10 or so minutes are also key to setting up the mood of this massive mix. Both of the new Eights Everywhere productions are top notch tools, whose growth and grooves play perfectly around Binary Function's "C0ntr0l." Stay tuned for the release of both "Up Cat" and "Knead" with Eights Everywhere's socials, find the free download here, and full tracklist via Beyond Sessions, here.

New Music For Your Weekend

Fridays are always the best day for finding new music, and today is no different. The first thing I found upon opening my computer may be my favourite, not just of the day, but of the year thus far. It is Oliver's Inner Circle: Remixes & Rarities. The original release, Full Circle, was in my shortlist for albums of the year here, and this matches it, perhaps even surpassing it. Putting aside my disco funk bias, it is undeniably some of the best sound design I've ever heard. But that's just par for the course with U-Tern and Oligee, who never disappoint when it comes to crafting the cleanest, most crisp sounds. The four new originals are all top notch and the three remixes, brilliant turns on tracks we've come to love.

Of course this was not the only outstanding release today, and while the playlist I've put together below is not entirely made up of today's tracks, they are all new to me. So like last week I've put together a number of random selections that I found and enjoyed today. Once again, no genres, just good music. Listen below and pick up those tracks marked with an asterisk for free download.

Hotwagner - _thro
One of the wonkiest, most unique tracks I've ever heard. Plus it actually seems to work, in that it actually flows and works well together, as opposed to some of the uber glitched out, almost sound-clown type tracks out there. It's hard to wrap your head around, but that's half the fun. Imagine the screw faces if you dropped this in the club; you'd be both a hero and a legend. Just need a download.

Jesse And The Wolf - Selecta (ft. Ghostface Killah, Juelz Santana & Telli)
Fool's Gold always deliver, but I'm not sure I've enjoyed a rap track from them this much since A-Trak's "Piss Test." Even though it's three minutes, it doesn't feel like enough. Several replays for sure.

LeSage & J Whitty - Affinity*
Beautifully chill and smooth with subtle samples teased in the mist of its majesty. Thankfully the snow's melted away here, however this would play beautifully as the snow sparkles and glistens in the sun.

Syskey - Nerven
The kind of stomping bass house we've come to expect from CONFESSION. Yet another club weapon from the rising star that is Syskey. Don't be sleeping on him.

Bingo Players - Devotion (Boehm Remix)*
One of Bingo Players many classics, bolstered with a deep bass house delivery more suited for 2018.

Danni Darries - Different Ways (ft. Scope Joe)*
A more dreamy house delivery than the previous two track. The future feels invoke the awesome image of beach-side, sunset DJ set with a cool breeze and tasty mojito in hand.

Riddimz - Where I'm From (prod. Lamont Dex)*
Is grime supposed to be this smooth? Either way I like it. Lamont Dex's production is strong yet lets Riddimz unique accent shine through. Sneaky good stuff.

DROELOE - Backbone (ft. Nevve)*
How Nevve has not "lost her voice" is beyond me. She's been everywhere lately. Just like her track with Robotaki that was in my playlist last week, she's used to perfection here, not just in her natural vocals, but in the vocal chops. DROELOE's percussion and chord choices are so damn good. Brilliant.

Gigi D'Agostino - L'Amour Toujours '94 (Ibranovski Remix)*
Another classic receiving a 2018 update, but where Boehm's delivers with a more wild, raucous drop, Ibranovski leaves a more tempered touch, staying true to the original. Another excellent club tool.

60th Grammy Awards (Write-ins & Predictions)

I'll never grow tired of this picture, or really any of Prince, but I submit this otherwise without comment.
When the Grammys released their list of nominees back in November, I did an off the cuff breakdown of the relevant categories here, and promised I'd return with my predictions and write-in nominations. Earlier this week in the typical uncontrollable brainstorm that happens just before falling asleep, I realized I better do that soon. Then, despite avoiding so much of the hype surrounding the record industry's self-congratulatory award show, I eventually became aware that "Music's biggest night" was in fact this weekend. So here I am jumping on that bandwagon, delivering some silly predictions and attempting to shine a light on some artists I feel deserve more praise than they are currently receiving. As usual I preface this whole endeavor by reminding you that this is done (like the awards themselves) simply for fun and to get people talking and sharing more music from their favourite artists.

Bump In The Hump: January 24 (Season 7, Episode 16)

Tracklist

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Seven Part Weekend Warmup

If you thought last week was busy with shows (three great ones on Friday night alone), this week puts that to shame. Originally I had a list of six shows I was set to support on the Weekend Warmup, but that list just got one bigger with a last minute announcement that included an artist I was already set to play. That being said I'll quickly link the shows I'm supporting on tonight's episode below. I've placed an asterisk next to the artist you'll hear from and linked it to the Facebook event page.

Thursday January 25th

Humans* at Velvet Underground

Friday January 26th

METUM Monthly inside CTRL ROOM w/ George Loukas, Jake Chec, Blair Malott* and more

Destructo* w/ Habstrakt & Dillon Nathaniel at UNIUN for Factory Fridays

Low Frequency at Round Venue ft. Charlie Zane* & Billionz

Saturday January 27th

DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Playlist & Skratch Bastid* at Koerner Hall

Road To Ever After - Snails* w/ Hydee, Skretaz & Rayz at Club 77

Billy Kenny w/ Chris Larsen* & Consequence Of Sound at CODA

Whether house, bass, techno or otherwise there's most everything for everyone, and apart from the slight chance of rain, the weekend is looking incredible, especially for the deep freeze of January.

While you might think all this focus on the weekend would leave little room for new music, you'd be wrong. There's eight new artist debuts and a whole lot of Bump In The Hump veterans, including Chromeo, Demuir, Dom Dias, Eytan Tobin, Keys N Krates, Internet Daughter and Robotaki. Yet another episode for the books, so get your Wednesday dancing socks ready and join Bump In The Hump on Radio Humber, live from 6-8 PM EST here or catch it via Mixcloud after the fact, here.

Chaka Khan - I Know You, I Live You (Late Nite Tuff Guy Rework)

If you're into disco and you don't know Late Nite Tuff Guy, there's something wrong with you. No one is more assured a spot on Mount Rushmore in this generation of disco designers than him. A short scroll through his Soundcloud catalog shows off game changing cuts of classic Fleetwood Mac, Toto, and Talking Heads, as well as more typical disco delights from Michael Jackson, Sade, and Donna Summer. This weekend he grew that long list with the one and only Chaka Khan.

This isn't the first time he's played with Chaka Khan's vivacious vocals, as just a year ago he took on "What Cha' Gonna Do For Me" to go with several others years earlier. Just do yourself a favour and spend some time digging through his collection, you will not regret it. But onto this new mix.

Apparently after "getting lots of messages" asking for his remix of "I Know You, I Live You," he's obliged in offering up its brilliance for streaming via Soundcloud. The disco tones start off delicate, demanding your ears pay close attention. Then, as the atmosphere rises so does your temperature and heart rate; you might even find yourself getting to your feet. Then once those horns hit, all hopes of remaining unmoved are lost. The groove and delight of it all is utterly infectious, flowing from the perfect mixture of the live instrumentation and binding electronic elements. And while you may know the original, which it does indeed keep close to, LNTG adds just the right amount of reinvigorating allure. The back and forth playfulness of the vocals and instruments in the midsection is simply sublime, with particular pleasure arising from the momentary pause and splash at about 3:46.

It's not hard to understand why so many people would feel the need to reach out in search of this track, as even a simple stream should significantly improve your day. That being said I'm hoping we get some kind of release because I'd definitely love to jam to this just about everywhere I go. Follow Late Nite Tuff Guy's socials below and keep your ears and eyes peeled for more music from the master.FOLLOW LATE NITE TUFF GUY: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Sébastien Léger - Lost Miracle

Can a track be epic yet subtle at the same time? I believe we've got a resounding yes with the latest from Sébastien Léger. The title track from his Friday release Lost Miracle is just the most recent example of the "French Dj/Producer/Artist," and all around musical magician's awe inspiring abilities. Last Tuesday Mixmag premiered the b-side "Dida," and while it succeeds with sublime strings and a warm summer glow, it could not properly prepare us for the freakishly fabulous "Lost Miracle."

Readers of this blog will be familiar with my love for Sébastien Léger and his penchant for producing pristine tracks. They always seem to stack several layers of luscious sound design and interlocking percussion with an incredible ease. And of course that is the case once again. The opening is classic Léger with all sorts of a sounds playing back and forth in an indescribable pattern. It captures your attention as the picture he paints slowly and subtly comes into shape. The breezy and cool atmosphere awakens with long sweeping and shimmering synths emanating out of thin air. Yet to this point the picture is veiled in a formless fog, like the chilly air as sunrise approaches. Then like the first beacon of light streaming over the skyline, the botanic bass blasts into beautiful life.

This blissful warmth plays carefree, bringing more life and love to the already awesome layers, pulling them in, much like the sunflower following the sun across the sky. And this is where things really start to get glorious. Another layer is established as each living thing the sun's strength touches begins to sing and dance. This harmonious top line is tender and tickling. It fills the track, myself, and truly the world with an incredible sense of ease and satisfying serenity. And like every element in Sébastien Léger's productions it is alive and breathing, never remaining the same but flowing with a freedom not unlike a river. It meanders magnificently from more electronic synth strength to brilliant bells and picturesque piano. As if this weren't epic enough itself, Léger strips down the track, illustrating each layer's beauty and, in turn, importance to the track as a whole. This only makes the return even more resplendent, recasting the final three minutes in miraculous magic. The flair and finesse found in this track is nothing short of genius, yet that's seemingly par for the course with Sébastien Léger. Set yourself up for a successful day and wake up with this warmth as your alarm. Download via Beatport, here.FOLLOW SÉBASTIEN LÉGER: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Half An Orange - Chuck Taylors (ft. Bijou)

Friday marked Ohio duo Half An Orange's debut release on Lowly Palace. Teaming up with vocalist Bijou, "Chuck Taylors" flies high with a whimsical warmth. It succeeds with a weightless delivery from both the production and vocal perspectives. Whether conjuring images of bounding on the moon, floating down a lazy river or soaring asleep in a dream, there's no denying the misty mood of the track. It is no coincidence that Bijou's Soundcloud and Twitter URLs are "BijouDream," as her voice only furthers the feathery floating figure of "Chuck Taylors." The whole thing just oozes with ease and carefree feels, especially as the instrumental glistens like the dew at dawn, ringing resplendent. If you're in the market for a little magic, look no further than this. Download free via The Artist Union here.FOLLOW HALF AN ORANGE: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Booka Shade - Night Surfing

Techno titans Booka Shade are a gift that just keeps on giving. You might think that after more than a dozen years in the scene their output may have slowed down or that their best work lay behind them, but with this forthcoming release, Night Surfing/Future Primitives, those doubts are all but cast aside.

Of course we know them for their landmark productions "Body Language" and Movements, yet a decade later their recent releases continue to be nothing short of spectacular. They released a full length album Galvany Street, a new EP Aftermath/Limelight, and remixed Rufus' "Be With You," my personal favourite production of theirs in the last two years. That being said, I think I've got a new one with this soon to be released a-side. While we haven't yet got a full play of "Future Primitives," it's counterpart was uploaded to Mixmag's Youtube channel yesterday, with a full release February 2nd.
Their trademark top notch sound design is on full display right from the get go with strong, sweep you off your feet, shuffling and the dopest of deep synth throbs. Then there's their potent percussion work with nearly every drum imaginable taking the track into a wild scene of nature. And I'd like to stop here to note that this is perhaps the most enjoyable part of Booka Shade's productions. As with "Night Falls" and "In White Rooms" they're able to inject a natural-world feel into their overtly electronic productions. The scenes they create remove you from whatever dark club you're in and transport you to an incredibly vivid landscape, whether it be a sweeping savanna, a gigantic jungle or an island paradise. In the case of "Night Surfing," I envision a tropical jungle at the ocean's edge, of course in the evening with the stars sparkling like the synths. And this is where our story continues.

As you exit the jungle of the atmosphere set out by the drums, the roaring synths and rumbling in the distance beckon you to the water. The rising top line is tremendously tempting, causing you to cast aside all angst of entering the ocean alone. It's allure is magical yet alien, as the scintillating night sky screams out its siren song. But once you get out there the darkness and danger once again rears its ugly head. All hope seems lost as you've become stranded, cast away with the current. The only saving grace is Booka Shade's god like combination of these two opposing narratives around the 5:30 mark. The hopelessness has sunk in at this point but you've come to accept it, opting to bask in the beauty of the brightly lit sky. Like the track itself, it is impossible to look away, only to enjoy every last second. The power of progression is on full display, and Booka Shade have shown their prowess yet again.

Time For Another Playlist

Upon the suggestion of Brayden of Audiation, I've decided it was time to make another playlist, and while I believe he was recommending a curated playlist on Spotify, that's not really what I'm about. My focus isn't even properly a true focus yet a scattered selection of just about everything under the ever growing dance and electronic umbrella. And while I've got nothing against Spotify, Soundcloud is still the place for discovery and uninterrupted listening experiences (although I've heard of people encountering ads I've never experienced them myself, perhaps due to my adblockers). Anyway, I've taken up this suggestion and put together a little list of new tracks that I enjoy and think you might too. Of course it runs from dubstep and trap, to future bass, techno and everything in between. So there should be something for everyone but perhaps not, whatever. Playlist and short write-ups below.
Those tracks with an asterisk are available for free download.

LIZ - Queen Of Me
Been wondering where Wave Racer has been lately and I guess this is our answer. You can't deny his influence in the rise of future bass and it's proof that classic future bass can still sound fantastic all these years later. Add LIZ's always enjoyable lyricism and flow and you've got a perfect pop production.

Clarian - Under The Gun (Tiga Remix)
Tiga always wins no matter what he's doing. The atmosphere of the opening is so strong, and the slow burning, groove build godly. I can't be the only one who feels a little Toto "Africa" in there, can I?

Robotaki - Together We're Screwed (ft. Nevve)
Not many mix real instrumentation and electronic influences together as well as Robotaki. Nevve's voice is spectacular, and the way it winds around all the elements of the drop is quite simply genius.

Wraz - Reefa
No that's not actually a rasta delivering the vocals, that's Motus. An incredible production reminding us of dub's homeland. Truthfully I'm not the biggest dub fan, but when it's done like this I can't turn away.

Monolith Slip - TOKUGAWA*
Bassline footwork with a bedsqueak twist? What is this glorious heaven I've stumbled into? Just wow.

Blaize - Boujee*
Just when you thought we were done with "Bad & Boujee" this banging bass/g-house flip finds just the right mix between the original's allure and a dope driving drop. Especially well placed vocal chops.

Hanz Zimmer - Time (Paradoks Edit)*
The undeniable majesty of Hanz Zimmer rebuilt around a shuffling deep house groove. The shimmering top line is what's sold me on Paradoks' new version. Playful yet full of poise.

Mikes Revenge - Fire*
The most unabashedly banging track in this list. But that's not to say it's all heavy and no heart. The ringing bells are beautiful, especially in opposition to the turnt trap delivery. The amalgam of all things heavy in each of the differing drops keeps you on your toes and leaves your head spinning.

Mary J. Blige - Just Fine (Baron Fields Rework)*
Deliciously funky and groovy flip with some stunning vocal chops and synth stabs. You're definitely going to have to give this more than one play to get the gist of what Baron's done with this. Wild.

Kaosic - Love Song

Sometimes you press play on a track, find that it feels familiar yet can't quite put your finger on why. That happened with this track from Miami's Kaosic. The vocals, which I eventually figured out were Selena Gomez, lead the track out with a dreamy mixture of trap, Jersey Club and just the right amount of kawaii chiptune feels. It happens all too often a pop song has broken into my consciousness without me knowing and this yet another case. Of course that means the lyrics and vocals were catchy, but most often the pop production leaves me wanting more or certainly something less standard. And this is where Kaosic comes in. Yes, I'm a fan of kawaii and Jersey Club, but this repackaging just speaks to me. It's not much more than a beat, but still a good beat that moves and grooves. The drums are the key, with the double tapping bass mimicking the heartbeat, while the rolling snares and subsequent fills keep the track moving along nicely. The stabbing synth at about 2:03 brings a good bounce that turns "Love Song" into a club tool. It's exactly the kind of subversive remake that I'd be happy to hear in a mix or just about any venue as a nice change of pace from the yawn producing original production.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Post Malone - I Fall Apart (Young Bombs Remix)

Just last week I played Benzi's edit of Post Malone's "I Fall Apart" as mixed with Ekali and QUIX's take on Porter Robinson's "Language." This week our own Young Bombs have added their names to the ever growing list of Post Malone remixers with their take on his latest viral sensation. As I said on last week's show these are by far my favourite Post Malone vocals, and I'm glad I get to bring them to you again this week. I've been on the Young Bombs bandwagon after first hearing their remix of Katelyn Tarver, and this may be my new favourite of theirs. They've let the guitar guide the track alongside Malone's crooning, before building a brilliant and emotive future bass drop. The chord choices only further cut to the core, making this one of the most gut churning yet beautiful productions in recent memories. Grab your copy for free via Hive and catch it in the mix on Bump In The Hump tonight. This mix of gut churning beauty is a theme tonight, with new tracks from Miles Away, Bishu, and Vanic, all supplying it in droves. Of course there's also pure bangers and dope grooves from the likes of Hunter Siegel, Hanz Ford, Keys N Krates and Landyn. We've also got a hearty helping of disco as we look ahead to a stacked lineup Friday with Spacedisco's Winter Warmup at One Loft featuring Hatiras, Vincent Caira, LeBaron James and others (RSVP/Tickets). As if that weren't enough, friends of the show Loud Luxury are back in town taking over Factory Fridays at UNIUN (RSVP/Tickets). Rounding out the trio of shows Friday night is TOKiMONSTA who hits Velvet Underground with support from fellow friend, Dom Dias (RSVP/Tickets). Finally, in a fitting end to the fire finale there's a new track from Toast and Motus, the latter of which joins Wraz for the first B2B episode of My Mixtape. Hear my interview with them tonight, ahead of their episode Saturday January 20th at 11 PM EST. All of this and more on Bump In The Hump, Radio Humber, live from 6-8 PM EST here and cataloged after the fact via Mixcloud.

SOPHIE - Just Like We Never Said Goodbye (Qim Flip)

Casual fans will know SOPHIE for the equally massive tracks "Msmsmsm" and "Lemonade" from the hyper-kinetic album Product Bigger fans will know her widespread songwriting and production credits for the likes of Madonna, Charli XCX, and Vince Staples. To say that 2017 was a big year for her would be a vast understatement. She was on two of the biggest tracks of the year with Cashmere Cat and Lunice, as well as her own stunning breakout "It's Okay To Cry." And while we look forward to her album Whole New World, I can't help but share a remix of what was my favourite track from Product.

Qim's first release comes in the form a future bass remix of SOPHIE's "Just Like We Never Said Goodbye." The allure of the original is clear, while in stark contrast to the aforementioned cuts from Product. It is more of a standard song, subverting the psychotic stabs and fearsome flourishes that most have come to know SOPHIE for. It is at once bright and beautiful, yet also dark and haunting. While the unhinged club quality of SOPHIE is undeniable, this track has harnessed that energy, directing it into an incredible piece of art, which in my mind sets the stage for "It's Okay To Cry."

As I often say with remixes of this nature, you must tread lightly, in effort to both maintain the original's artistry and not debase its allure. Qim has done that quite well. The raw nature of his future bass flip works perfectly with SOPHIE's original. The new upbeat and optimistic drop is a more overt example of the heights achieved in the original, and yet it still plays perfectly with the careening chords and sub-bass that kept it grounded and sneakily sad. I find I'm still partial to a lot of future bass and the potential it holds, and it is generally the drums fills that seal the quality, to which Qim has delivered. The lead into the drops just always seems to hit my heart in the right place, making this a surefire second and third listen candidate. You'll have to get those on Soundcloud though as no download is currently available.FOLLOW QIM: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Sam Groove - Top Back

Not sure which drew me in more, the BIJOU repost or the GTA: Vice City-esque album art. No matter, the booty bass of Phoenix's Sam Groove and "Top Back" is sure to garner plenty of airtime whether driving with windows sealed and the heat blasting, or windows down, if it ever gets warm enough for that again. Hell, it'll probably get plenty of plays while I'm just walking, which will inevitably turn into a strut. Not only is the album art reminiscent of this standout game of yesteryear, musically it delivers a perfect mix of classic rave vibes with the great g-house grooves dominating the moment. The lasers and other effects lap like waves on the rocky shore that is the unshakable bass. And while the bass may be banging, it's nothing without the slews of stupid good percussion that slap, clap, snap, rattle and shake to perfection. It's quite clear throughout that Sam Groove knows how to knock off some killer cuts, but in the drops especially does his mastery shine through. knapsack - Clasp (Shortcuts)

After being wowed by my first exposure to knapsack via "Brainforest" back in October, my interest was once again captured when his track "Clasp (Shortcuts)" came up in my feed this morning. From his just released debut album Bend, this track is yet another example of the Chicago product's overwhelming warmth of production and crush-worthy creativity.

While the previous single "Inferior" takes a more typical song structure, this track plays out more like a beat, but a brilliant one at that. The chords are cool and calming yet command attention, the way the glisten and glide seems to speak to the secondary title, (Shortcuts). There's just something about their delivery that seems swift in its movement despite their length.

Then there's the understated yet sublime secondary melody that swings in around 0:45. It's delivery is a deliriously delightful mixture of toy box tuning and ethereal atmosphere. Opposing this, and leading to the eventual jamming finale, is the depths of bounding bass at about 2:13. And this is where the track becomes more than just a beat: knapsack's knack for strong sound design and playful progression is on full display, and yet I haven't got to my favourite part of the track, what I see as the titular component.

The "Clasp" here seems overtly obvious and oh so integral to the top notch nature of this production, it is of course the crispy crunch of his percussion. At times echoing endlessly, others a simple double tap, but however it occurs it is always awesome and truly the key connection between the magnificent melodies and ingenious grooves. Bearcubs - Landslide

London's Bearcubs teases us again with another incredibly intricate and cool creation from his forthcoming debut album Ultraviolet, set to drop March 2nd. After the lead single "Do You Feel" dropped two months ago, we finally get another taste of the awesome atmospherics of Bearcubs with the dreamy delivery of "Landslide." It oozes with a masterful mix of SBTRKT and James Blake vibes, which is more heartening than finding out heaven is real. And despite the downtrodden turn from the former single, this is exactly the aura of this track exudes, heaven. It's almost as though gravity has been flipped, forcing the "Landslide" upwards. It is all consuming and incredibly powerful, truly a force of nature. These two tracks make Ultraviolet my most anticipated release of 2018 thus far, and I'm incredibly excited by the fact that I'll be able to enjoy for a week before he hits Rivoli in Toronto March 10th (RSVP/Tickets). Pre-order the album here, stream "Landslide" below, and purchase here.FOLLOW BEARCUBS: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER
