Enlightened Listening for October 30

We've made it through another week and that means it's time to look back at its releases with the weekly new music playlist, Enlightened Listening. There's a whole bunch of my personal favourites among some of my most trusted labels, and it ranges from indietronic pop to dystopic bangers. It starts with the genius of Jim-E Stack's EPHEMERA and moves through into dancier joints from three pleasurable pairings in Myd & Mac Demarco, Planningtorock's remix of Austra, and the Purple Disco Machine remix of Royal Blood. The next foursome features a fabulous take on The Specials' "Ghost Town," an ingenious and immersive album from So Durand, an epic and dancey remix from SOPHIE, and finally yet another infectious cut from Overmono. Turning the page to house, Cloverdale opens a run of five house releases with his debut release on his exciting new label Vibrancy. "Racket Tactics," like all the releases on the label, is available free (with stems for remixing) and comes paired with customized merch. Gorgon City then receive an electrifying remix of "Burning," which is followed by a trio of top-notch house EPs. Going full steam ahead to close things out we get Netsky's first album in four years, an incredibly energetic single from High Contrast and the aforementioned dystopic destruction of plusgood, who closes things out with his trademark Big Brother inspired bangers. Enjoy!

Jonathan Mono - ILLUSION

At the risk of becoming a broken record by once again extolling the ease of discovery via Soundcloud's The Upload playlist, today's scroll through said algorithm brought me to Jonathan Mono's bustling breakbeat and disco-funk affair "ILLUSION." Leader of Jakarta-based ensemble Neurotic, Mono has been on quite a run of releases lately, sharing seven new productions in the span of 15 days. "ILLUSION," his second most recent release, was made as a submission to the third edition of Disclosure's weekly #BeHoward competition. Dazzling right from the jump, there's no letup in "ILLUSION" as I imagine it to be a dive into Mono's consciousness with synapses firing in every direction. There's too many instruments and elements to note, but the track never comes across as messy or muddy, but rather more like a speed run through a psychedelic version of Sonic The Hedgehog. It features a number of triumphant moments in which you can catch your breath before once again being whisked off your feet, tumbling towards another feverish display of bristling bass, stanky sax or dizzying drum-work. Funky, fun and absolutely overflowing with energy, stream "ILLUSION" below and be sure to check out Jonathan Mono's recent run of releases for more!

Bump In The Hump: October 28 (Season 9, Episode 48)

Tracklist

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Dex Arson & Charlie Zane - Death Squad

With Halloween, at least what's left of it, right around the corner, tonight's all-new episode of Bump In The Hump will feature a flurry of fearsome fire. Of course, not all the spooky season tracks have been unleashed yet, so we'll feature the leftovers next week. But back to this week's bangers. Perhaps the most banging of them all, and obviously so when it combines two of Toronto's most twisted: Dex Arson and Charlie Zane, "Death Squad" unleashes all hell in its tight three-minute massacre. Nipping at your heels as you do your best to avoid its baleful bass and destructive dubs, there's no escape from the explosive onslaught that Arson and Zane deliver here. Part of a relentless section of rancour, catch "Death Squad" in the mix on Bump In The Hump tonight, live from 7-9 PM EDT on Radio Humber, after the fact as cataloged on Mixcloud, or as part of Bassweight Records' Syndicate Volume 4 Deluxe.

Tchami - Damaged Heart (ft. Todd Edwards)

As mentioned in last week's Enlightened Listening, Tchami released his long-awaited debut LP Year Zero this past Friday. With teaser singles featuring Marlena Shaw and Gunna, among a few other fabulous house tracks in "Born Again" and "Buenos Aires," it was clear this was going to be a diverse and indeed divine debut. After having the chance to let all of Year Zero sink in over the weekend, I've come to the conclusion that the album's finale, "Damaged Heart" is my favourite of the bunch.

Featuring the legendary Todd Edwards, the captivating conclusion strikes a sombre tone as it sends Year Zero into the next realm. Starting with a crisp, tight and groovy drum bed, the track is immediately infectious with an undeniable toe-tapping quality. This gripping energy explodes in gorgeous fashion as the sublime synths hit, delivering a deep and soulful wave for our ears (and heart) to ride. The way these two elements (drums and synths) play together is beautiful and rousing, but what makes "Damaged Heart" so clearly calm and confident is the inspirative vocals. Putting into words what the music itself exudes, "Damaged Heart" struts with an incredible surety as though bounding weightlessly through the heavens.

Leaving you feeling lighter and stronger, "Damaged Heart" is as good a credit roll as it gets sending Year Zero off in a reincarnating revelry. Stream the uber-cool collab below and get the album now here.

Jort Kroon - Playa Marimba

Once again I find myself drawn to a track selected by the algorithm behind Soundcloud's The Upload playlist. Almost immediately upon seeing the name "Playa Marimba," I knew it was something I had to check out. From Amsterdam's Jort Kroon, the track does indeed feature the magical resonance of the marimba, although not quite as much as I hoped. That said, the wait is more than worth it when wooden bars finally come in.

Featuring all kinds of organic instrumentation in a groovy medley that straddles several genres and backgrounds, "Playa Marimba" is a joyous jaunt that will make your Monday morning instantly easier. Unlike the opening to the workweek, there's no drag or dullness in the track at all, rather it's blithe and perky. As each additional element is added, "Playa Marimba" becomes brighter and more buoyant as it inspires jolts of energy as if you had ordered an extra shot of espresso. The combination of the electricity of the keyboard and the rhythmic drive of the percussion makes for a strong earworm foundation, but the real payoff comes when Kroon really starts to play with things. Shortly after the two-minute mark, we're greeted by a gorgeous amalgamation of energy and gambol. And it only gets further groovy and spirited as "Playa Marimba" rebuilds under the guidance of a newly introduced guitar in the second half.

Clearly a fun first production play by Jort Kroon, in what seems to be his first-ever original production, "Playa Marimba" is exactly the injection of uplifting, groovy energy we all need on a Monday morning.

Enlightened Listening for October 23

It's the weekend and once again we've got a ton of new music in this week's Enlightened Listening. While there are a few albums that you ought to check out (Gorillaz, Tchami, UZ), I've opted to keep this playlist more focused on singles, save for the incredible Caribou remix package. Said four-pack includes Shanti Celeste, Kareem Ali, India Jordan and my favourite, Logic1000's tremendous take on "Sunny's Time." But back to the singles. The opening foursome features the latest from This Never Happened, fabulous new Joris Voorn, phenomenal new Luttrell and of course, the first new Eric Prydz in four years, "NOPUS." Changing gears in the funky middle there's a groovy joint from Thando1988, Theo Kottis' enchanting take on Disclosure, and the uncanny alchemy of Hot Chip and Jarvis Cocker. Finally, we roar towards the rave with the final four singles. It starts with an injection of energy from Prospa and continues with two equally mindblowing tracks: a remix from Mura Masa and a collab from Mr. Bill and ill.Gates. Wrapping everything up is Spor's incredible remix of Kumarion "Want It." Enjoy!

Dasboy - Cherish The Day

Always a sucker for a Sade sample, I've just got to share this vibey joint that appeared in my feed today. Fresh from Seattle's Dasboy, "Cherish The Day" makes use of the track of the same name from the 1992 album Love Deluxe. Equally lush and chill, Dasboy's new bed is far more full than the almost ambient backing track of the original. This new direction is no great departure nor ill-suited sound for Sade as Dasboy delivers a psychedelic, trip-hop house beat rife with organic feeling instrumentation. Of particular note are the organ-like chords and cool keys that set the track aloft. While the sparse production on the original leaves plenty of room for Sade's heavenly vocals, that's not really the impetus behind this track. Dasboy's "Cherish The Day" taps into the nostalgia and familiarity of the immortal Adu while repositioning her vocals into his new multicoloured mist, allowing listeners to drift off into its divine distortion. And this is where we find my only gripe, I could use another three or four minutes of this to really allow for a fulsome descent into the daydream that is Dasboy's "Cherish The Day." Stream it now below and if you dig it, be sure to check out more of Dasboy's back catalogue here.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Smalltown DJs - Good Thang (ft. Bootsy Collins)

Never ones to miss, Smalltown DJs remain one of Canada's best and most consistent purveyors of house music. They've been a staple of my sets dating back to my time on CFBU as I was just reminded of their "Good People" collab with Grandtheft. But instead of finding the funk in the banjo there, their new track "Good Thang" gets its injection of funk from the legend that is Bootsy Collins. Another party track par excellence, this new Fool's Gold release overflows with excitement and energy, pumping in a whole bunch of bass (guitar and otherwise). And if the groove of "Good Thang" isn't enough for you, the vociferous vocals are sure to leave you weak in the knees. Get "Good Thang" here and catch it in the mix on Bump In The Hump tonight, live from 7-9 EDT on Radio Humber, or after the fact on Mixcloud.FOLLOW SMALLTOWN DJS: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Paraleven - Retrograde Mixtape IV

A little serendipity here as yesterday's post about SWIM (here) led me to this mix from Paraleven: a powerful three-hour affair with healing and harmonizing at its heart. The fourth edition of the Atlanta-based producer's Retrograde Mixtape series comes just like the others did, in line with Mercury being in retrograde. As with each previous edition, Paraleven has been tuned the mix to 432 Hz; a small shift from the standard 440, but one said to be mathematically consistent with the universe and warmer feeling due to its longer wavelength. But beyond the x's and o's nitty-gritty, this mix struck a chord with me thanks to its incredible curation and seamless mixing.

As the first half-hour of the "Retrograde Mixtape IV" washes over me, I'm struck by the fact that I've barely noticed any transitions, just as no track has truly stood out. This is not to say that the mix has been faceless or mere background noise, but rather that it's been immensely easy to enjoy. Of course, there are little moments that speak to me more than others, but they are more of an ethereal feeling, a sonic time and place. For example, Double Touch's "Greatest Day" is full of the feeling of flying, as though it transforms you into a gull soaring over a tropical island paradise, floating on the warm vocals of Reigan. The next track, Dosem's "Eternal Summer" builds on that breathtaking beauty while shifting the soundscape to a busier locale. It is at this point that I cannot help but think of this mix as perfect for slow panning aerial shots of vacation destinations and naturescapes worldwide. It reeks of natural beauty and organic power.

Without going any further into the mix, as we're not here for the finer details but rather the larger harmony, "Retrograde Mixtape IV" is indeed a resplendent respite. For fans of All Day I Dream, Afterlife, Anjuna, Colorize, This Never Happened and melodic house & techno more largely, this mix is a cannot miss. Stream now below, find the tracklist here, and be sure to follow Paraleven's socials at the bottom.

SWIM - Love

Some vocals are so incredibly iconic that they can span decades, genres and all kinds of editing. It seems no matter how I encounter Leona Lewis' timeless classic "Bleeding Love," I'm always left in awe. Of course, the titular lyrics are immanently memorable but I'd venture to claim that the line used in the track below is just as much so.

"Love," from mysterious Melbourne-based producer SWIM, leans into the line "I'm in love with you," giving it a new dreamy analog bed. A triumph I encountered courtesy of Soundcloud's The Upload feature, this five-minute affair creeps quietly through its opening section, applying a cool calm from which Lewis' vocals emanate immaculately. As the crisp, yet inconspicuous percussion pushes "Love" ever higher, the vocal chops and synths really begin to soar, striding brilliantly and confidently towards the climactic final two minutes. And it is this fabulous final combination that makes "Love" such a beguiling beauty. SWIM combines all the best elements of his production in one momentous minute, authoring an utterly euphoric trance. Pair it with the Youtube visualizer and you might get a different feeling, but the immensely soulful strength of "Love" continues to pervade. Stream the seductive single below, get it now via pre-order of Somewhere, Somehow and follow SWIM's socials at the bottom.

Enlightened Listening for October 16

Happy Friday everyone! We've got a fabulous set of new releases for this week's Enlightened Listening. It features two full-length projects we've been building towards in the lush L.A. LP from Tensnake and CRi's captivating Anjunadeep offering Juvenile. There's also a number of personal favourites (TSHA, Eli Escobar, LeBaron James and Kardano), headlined by the triumphant return of Stephen Walking (who goes disco). Another unlikely disco turn comes from Matroda, while that genre gets another dose of new Duck Sauce. Other big names include Four Tet, BRONSON, No Mana and Lindstrøm & Prins Thomas, who are gearing up for a new album which is set to drop on November 20th. Finally, we get fierce in the final two releases as Somna & LTN turn up the heat before Barbosa's overwrought techno in EMERCIVE debut (ra). Find each of the releases linked below the playlist and have a great weekend!

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Abstrakt Sonance - Ishtar

A staple in the Canadian dubstep scene, Abstrakt Sonance may have just released his magnum opus. An enormous 17 track album, Ishtar is much like the label it is released on; Deep, Dark and Dangerous. Featuring plenty of primal power, its instrumentals are equally awesome and irksome, sending shivers down your spine and causing you to constantly check your back to ensure you aren't being followed. Despite this cold and callous creepiness, Ishtar is such a well crafted hour that you cannot turn away, nor are there any tracks worth skipping. Even if you're not one for instrumentals, you'll still find a few fire vocal features from D Double E, Vandull and others. A landmark LP in Abstrakt Sonance's already incredible career, Ishtar lives up to its lofty title and is well worth a full playthrough. Do so now below and catch a cut in the mix on Bump In The Hump tonight, live from 7-9 PM EDT on Radio Humber, or after the fact as cataloged on Mixcloud, here

Yotto's Birthday Beats

Finnish producer, label head and force to be reckoned with, Yotto is celebrating his birthday today and instead of us getting him presents, he's gifted us with two new productions. The first, and seemingly only official release, comes from his label Odd One Out as he remixes Toronto's AVIRA. While the original "Love Me" blazes a trail of destruction through its dark drops and taught, tension-driven torturous builds, Yotto chooses the side of light. Immediately uplifting and utopian in its arc, the Yotto remix is utterly resplendent delivering divine synth builds and buoyant rave-worthy drops. On the other side of things, Yotto posted a track entitled "Wannabe Radio Edit" to his Soundcloud page in the early morning hours. With no description, nor any promotion on his socials, it's unclear whether this was actually meant to be shared or made public. That said I'm in love with it and the newfound disco/synthpop direction. Like his "Love Me" remix above, Yotto sparkles sublime here in the warmth of "Wannabe." The mixture of the tickling topline, the blissful bouncy bass and slew of subtle effects is pure musical magic. It is where I "Wannabe." Here's to hoping this sees an official release soon, but either way, it's a hell of a treat! Enjoy these birthday beats and be sure to follow Yotto below.

UPDATE: "Wannabe" has since been removed from Soundcloud. Likely wasn't supposed to be public.FOLLOW YOTTO: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Kardano - Rock Tha Party

After the eclectic odyssey that was last week's episode of Bump In The Hump, we bring the party vibes this week with a house heavy selection. Pushing said section over the top, Vancouver's Kardano continues his incredible run of releases with new UFO Recordz single, "Rock Tha Party." It's clear Kardano's found his groove as this may well be his best work yet. It's got the kind of killer creativity and depth of design that allows a six-minute track to cruise along with ease, placing its listeners in the middle of a lively and energizing party. Not only does it overflow with the feeling of being at a real party, but also it delivers two diverse drops that keep things plenty interesting. Follow that with even more hard-hitting house and you've got one heck of an opening to this episode of Bump In The Hump. Bicep - Apricots

After sharing ray of sunshine "Atlas" in the darkness that was the early days of COVID, the Bicep boys are back with the second single from just-announced album Isles. Due out January 22nd on Ninja Tune, the new 10 track sophomore saga is set to feature more original vocals than ever before as well as a deeper dive into the duo's diverse inspirations.

Today's single, "Apricots" features two vocal samples, one from a Malawian folk group and another from the Bulgarian State Choir, both exceptionally placed amidst the duo's sublime synths. Having begun as an ambient, beatless piece (which may very well have been excellent by itself), the thumping kick drum, slick snare clicks and otherwise mostly subtle percussion provide a brilliant backbone for the fluttering synths and ethereal atmosphere. While it doesn't deliver the same bewitching breaks as either "Glue" or "Atlas," there is no shortage of seduction in "Apricots" whose warmth and alchemy is undeniable, especially in the fabulous final flourish starting at about 3:15.

Serene and spellbinding, get "Apricots" now with pre-order here and take the experience up a notch with the accompanying music video from BAFTA-winning director Mark Jenkin, here.

Hot Chip - Positive (Marcel Vogel & Adam Port Remix)

In a bit of a sneaky surprise, Hot Chip have tacked on a tremendous new remix of their track "Positive," from 2019 album A Bath Full Of Ecstasy. Appearing as Pete Tong's Essential New Tune Friday night, the Marcel Vogel & Adam Port remix had me questioning what year we were in.

Indeed a new release despite Beatport, Spotify and Soundcloud all crediting the track to last year's remix LP, this epic take on "Positive" is quintessential Hot Chip. The technological twist Vogel & Port put on this track reminds me of perhaps my favourite ever Hot Chip release, the sensational saga that was their 2015 take on New Order's "Tutti Frutti." These two tracks share the same propulsive, funky assembly line feel, making masterful use of mechanical sounds and electrifying effects atop the ever-growing atmosphere. Of course, the electro groove and driving drums are the heartbeat of this powerful remix of "Positive," but the soul and magic of Vogel & Port's production comes from the killer vocal chops. And as always, this is the critical element for me: finding life and organic energy in an otherwise inanimate and entirely electronic production. Here in "Positive," the vivacity of the original remains and indeed blossoms into this beautiful, bouncy and brisk affair. Enlightened Listening for October 2

We've made it to another month, and since it's the first Friday, that means it's Bandcamp day! Once again Bandcamp is waiving its revenue share today, passing 100% of all purchases to the artists. And again that means I'm doing an all Bandcamp edition of Enlightened Listening. Find all 16 releases (listed alphabetically) below and check out the following paragraphs for highlights and play-by-play.

A recommendation from Boy 8-Bit opens the onslaught of new tunes with Adrian Carter's "Suzette." Next up is an uber-cool album from Cinephonic who delivers some stunning jazz in a fabulous cinematic style. The first of two from the Defected family follows as Endor samples Beethoven for a cheeky house affair. Freeza Chin then gets icy with a five-pack of beats inspired by his time in Hawaii. Another equatorial inspiration follows as Hammer makes use of Costa Rican recordings, combining them with his synths to make a mystical medley of disco, house and techno.

Finally, Horse Meat Disco's album is here! Gracing Glitterbox, Love And Dancing is exactly the kind of uplifting and revitalizing music we need right now. Hot Chip keep things moving with a massive (mix) album of their own. Late Night Tales features three new exclusive tracks and a cover version, alongside a mix of their favourite euphoric and melancholic tracks. Keeping disco on the tip, The Vision follow with a remix (and dub/edit) of Jakatta and Seal's sublime "My Vision."

Flipping the playlist on its head, we roll towards a handful of harder rocking releases. First up, John Rolodex delivers a six-pack of sensational DnB joints. Lunice then gets mean with Miko through thrash and bash affair "Calm Down." Ghetto and juke guide the next release as Martyn Bootyspoon re-releases four banging bootlegs with proceeds going to Molly De Wind, who suffered domestic violence at the hands of Vanity Press Records' David Marroquin (story here). Two more brooding bootleg/remix/edit packs follow as Monstergetdown and OAKK deliver jungle/techno/bassline and bass/hip hop/juke, respectively.

The first of the final three releases in this week's playlist comes from Ryan Hemsworth who delivers another edition of his acclaimed edit series. Here he takes on Avril Lavigne, No Doubt, Hillary Duff and many more. And act quick as this is only going to be online for 24 hours (as he said at 12:04 AM EDT). The penultimate release then follows as Kudatah delivers a massive 22 track compilation of ambient, DnB, jungle, techno and vaporwave. Finally, Wraz wraps things up with two ominous and depth-defying dub/DnB hybrids.

Adrian Carter - Suzette

Cinephonic - Les Paradis Artificiels

Endor - Fur

Freeza Chin - Zip Pac

Hammer - Montezuma

Horse Meat Disco - Love And Dancing
