Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Sam Lamar - Major Arcana: Origins

Today marks the release of Sam Lamar's third EP on hometown label Kannibalen. Staying supernatural, Major Arcana: Origins picks up precisely where last year's Major Arcana left off. Following those four trump tracks/cards, these new three possess the same incredible power, while pushing the EP further into the infinite nether. "The Hierophant," "The Lovers" and "The Chariot" are all more esoteric and celestial in scope, a trend that continues as the deck progresses. While the deck seems stacked towards the sky, these tracks seem to dive deeper into the underworld of bass and brutishness.

The lead track "The Hierophant," which features Fly Jordy, is an unabashed banger led by snarling synths and a threatening top-line. "The Lovers" makes no room for a gentle touch or caring caress, instead it breaks out whips and chains, inflicting plenty of painful punches. Finally, "The Chariot" gallops through the gnarr as the most straightforward firefight of the trio. Each track is egregious in its inhumanity, while Sam Lamar's diabolic delivery is at peak performance in Major Arcana: Origins. Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Sam Lamar - The Magician

Montreal's Sam Lamar has been consistently making moves in the dubstep scene for over two years now and is showing no sign of slowing down. This year alone he's authored a remix of Illenium, dropped an EP on Uplink Audio and is now working towards an EP with Kannibalen. "The Magician" is from that forthcoming four track EP and establishes an unholy alchemy with creepy chords reminiscent of Rezz before its disgusting dub drops amidst all kinds of unhinged effects. Its power is pervasive and while it would be good enough to tease this episode of Bump In The Hump on its own, it's also a great fit as we look ahead to Nah Mean's new episode of My Mixtape, which includes six of Sam's tracks. Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Snails - Into The Light (ft. Sarah Hudson)

You know you've made it when you successfully coin your own genre name. That's the case with Vomitstep visionary, Snails. The Montreal maniac has been slinging the sub-bass sludge for years now and ought to be immediately identifiable to anyone who's spent anytime at bass music shows.

I first came across Snails and his sound when he collaborated with fellow Canadians Botnek on "KRMT," and could only describe that sound as guttural. It's incredibly visceral and absolutely intoxicating, perfect for losing your mind to in the middle of a mosh pit or an all out rager. Since then Snails has been building a cult-like following, fitting perfectly into the Kannibalen family and is now set to release his debut album, The Shell.

Accompanying the album he'll be taking a brand new stage show on tour across the continent (details here). There are dozens of stops including Toronto on December 29th (RSVP/Tickets), with several different artists joining him along the way. Again accompanying the album and tour is the release of lead single "Into The Light," featuring the vocals of Sarah Hudson. It's undoubtedly a Snails track, but repackaged in a new and exciting way. Stream it below, and click through to find the free download.Despite its name, this Snails track is decidedly dark, and fits perfectly into tonight's episode of Bump In The Hump. I've never done as much work on an episode as I have for this one, as I've had to mix a bunch of the tracks together in an effort to squeeze more sensational songs in. There's a deluge of dubstep, some diabolic deep house, badass DnB, and titanic trap. I've said it before, but this is truly the hardest and most banging episode of Bump In The Hump to date. Black Tiger Sex Machine - Futuristic Thriller Mix Part XIV

In case you've been under a rock for the past two plus years (and even then I wouldn't be surprised if Lucasfilm some how marketed to people under rocks), they're making new Star Wars films again. There's just about nothing left that hasn't been used to market/promote these new films. From completely unrelated products like batteries or razors, to sports shows and more, Star Wars has infected the consciousness of seemingly the whole world through militaristic marketing strategies. And listen, I get it, Star Wars was and has been a massive part of people's childhoods and brings back some major nostalgia, member? And who doesn't love the endorphins from a good memory?

So whether paid promotion or loving, free promotion like Black Tiger Sex Machine has just done with their "Futuristic Thriller Mix Part XIV," we're, for good or bad, stuck with Star Wars on the brain. I was a fan, and certainly did enjoy the original three parts when I was young, then parts of the three prequels when I was a little bit older, but I've yet to see The Force Awakens and am not planning to see Rogue One. It's just not for me, but this mix, most certainly is. Black Tiger Sex Machine have delivered a delightfully dark and forceful 44 minute mix, filled with Star Wars soundbites and big time bass tunes.
The captains of Kannibalen, show off their impressive mixing skills and massive library of unreleased productions, including multiple tracks from their forthcoming All I Want For Christmas Is Bass compilation: Karluv Klub's "Love Addicted," YOOKiE's "Subs," and Fed-Up's "Up D Ladda." There's also tracks from Axel Boy "Bun Up N Tun Up," Tommy Trash & Kittens "Nasty," Bare & Riot Ten "Knockout," TWOLOUD's edit of "Front2Back," as well as their own, "Armada" and "Face Down." However, my favourite bit comes when they use Luke's conversation with Obi-Wan as a riser leading into the drop of Deadmau5's "Imaginary Friends." You could say it's perfect because Luke's actually speaking with the ghost/spectral form of his dead friend, Obi-Wan.

In the final 10 minutes or so they go full steam ahead with a number of fire unreleased tunes, capping the mix with what we can only hope are tracks set to be released in the near future. I'm not sure there are any DJs more fitting for a Star Wars themed mix, as Black Tiger Sex Machine's sounds are full of lasers and space-aged effects, imitating explosions and warp speed propulsion. Despite sounding like the dark side this trio are truly rebels, as powerful as the likes of Luke, Leia and Han. But I suppose since their all male, you could sub out Leia for Chewy. Relive BTSM's Church Service with Apashe & Dabin

Last night at The Hoxton was undoubtedly a religious experience as revelers were treated to the thrilling future of Kannibalen artists Apashe, Dabin and label heads, Black Tiger Sex Machine. Dabin was first to take the stage at 11 and were wow right from the get go. When I arrived he had just dropped Flume's remix of Lorde's "Tennis Court" to which the crowd cheered and sang along. Shortly after that Dabin grabbed his guitar and shredded to Queen's "We Will Rock You," only adding to the crowd's sense of awe. Even though he was jumping between DJing and slaying the guitar, he was able to mix smoothly, moving from his "Kyoto" to the Jesse Slayter remix of Hoodboi's "Palm Reader" into Banvox's "Watch Me" and then his "Ghost Hack." While that four track stretch is a highlight in itself, Dabin truly outdid himself when he combined Metallica's "Enter Sandman" on his guitar with some seriously heavy electro drop, absolutely annihilating the ravenous audience. 

Dabin was followed by Apashe who opened his set in full 'Sith Lord' style with a dub remix of Star Wars' 'Imperial March' quite possibly Tujamo's "Darth Theme." Grabbing the crowd by the scruff of the neck he dropped his remix with Oski and Lennon of Backstreet Boys "Everybody." Things were getting pretty intense at this point, bass faces hit their peak when he dropped back to back vomitstep from Snails, in the form of his remix of "Pump This" and the Snails and Ghastly VIP version of "King Is Back." Sprinkling in Torro Torro's "Cashville" Jauz's remix of "Tip Toe Wing In My Jawwdinz," Wiwek's "Riot" the crowd was becoming putty in his hands. Further digging into the Kannibalen crate, Apashe dropped Lektrique & Autodidakt "Shots Fired," Erotic Cafe's "Killed By Humans," Snails "Murda Sound," rounded out with his remix of Excision's "Night Shine" and his originals, "Kannibalen" and "Trap Reqiuem." By the time Black Tiger Sex Machine was ready to take the stage, the crowd had totally bought in a was seemingly ready for anything. The intensity of the BTSM church quickly became a real thing when one of the most hardcore fans I saw the whole night was carried like a corpse and dropped on the couch beside me, clearly having had too much of something. The air was becoming thick and soupy with the temperature rising from the insane amount of movement, with the floors literally bouncing under the weight of the BTSM cultists, jumping up and down. The trio so shrewdly began their set with their track "Religion," while following it with a number of tracks from their new album (which you can stream here) including "Punks," "Blood Moon" and "Numbers." While their own tracks seemed to get the best response from the audience, especially, their "Jack Dat Body," "Stairway," "Rockers" and "Sleep Now In The Fire" remix, they were also able to decimate their followers with Boys Noize's "& Down" and Nom De Strip's "Reward Is Cheese" remix. It was their "Funeral March" that put the cherry on the top for me, book-ending their sacred set. All in all it was an epic night of apocalyptic tracks that simply annihilated the audience, one that I will not soon forget. Stream 'Welcome To Our Church' now, and see Black Tiger Sex Machine @ Hoxton tonight

Masked Montreal trio, Black Tiger Sex Machine, are playing The Hoxton tonight ahead of their massive North American tour, playing almost every day until mid-march. All of this ahead of the Tuesday release of their first full-length album Welcome To Our Church, on their own Kannibalen Records, also home to frequent (and album) collaborators Apache, Dabin, Kai Wachi, Lektrique, and Snails. They've so generously taken control of the weekend by uploading their full album for streaming on spotify, Although I'm sure if you just listen to the Preview Mix (below) you'll be hooked.

You may already be familiar with one of the tracks, "Numbers," which has been online since May 5th and was once a free download, I played on Electronic Impressions. It fits in neartly, near the end of the 12 track album, including intro "The Virus," and outro "The Church." Welcome To Our Church presents the group's musical look into the future, by producing a nightmarish doomsday, sound-tracking a hostile apocalyptic wasteland. Each tracks thrives with combative, militaristic atmosphere, and a tremendously audacious tone. Each track exudes power, transforming listeners into a pompous, puffed up wrestler, strutting into the ring on a bigger ego trip than Donald Trump. The landscape the trio paint is so dismally dire, it could be the depiction of a future with the Donald as president.

Whether it's the foreboding gospel choir in "Broadside," the fanatical lyricism of Husser in "Crazies" or the dirge of an unholy "Armada," BTSM have injected the very ethos of their creed into their debut album. Anticipate the congregation to arrive early; as of this morning tickets were more than 70% sold out. If you want to observe tonight's ritual, you'll have to act with haste, otherwise you'll have to follow them around the continent. Expect hear many of the above tracks tonight, as well as much more Kannibalen bass with help from aforementioned, Apashe and Dabin.
