Radio Soulwax Presents CELESTIAL VOYAGE PART 1: QUEST FOR ORLOK

There's no denying the legendary quality of the Belgian Dewaele brothers, their work as part of Soulwax and 2manydjs is truly timeless. As part of today's Throwback Thursday post we go back nearly a decade to the initial release of Radio Soulwax's amazing Celestial Voyage and its debut episode "Quest For Orlok."

A multimedia masterpiece, the hour long episode is space themed and dives through largely disco driven tracks, but basically makes room for anything under the night sky. Of course the selection and mixing is masterful, but the coolest bit of this throwback is the accompanying visuals. The album art nearly jumps off the screen, flowing forward like the infamous Star Wars openings, and somehow breaks free of their two dimensional depth, further bringing each track to life. The Star Wars style delivery is fitting in that the main theme is remixed here, as well as the likes of The Bee Gees, Jean-Michel Jarre, and Comet, who turn Lord Of The Rings into space disco.

Soulwax recommend watching and dancing to this in a darkened room without any distractions. It's as good as an escape as most of us can get right now. Enjoy on Facebook below or Vimeo here.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: KROY - OPINEL

After blessing us with beautiful banger "Rain" alongside Apashe, Montreal's KROY is back and black as ever. New original "OPINEL" is a potent piece of noir pop that is sure to get your skin crawling. Just as in "Rain," KROY's vocals swirl above a brilliantly built and haunting bed that blurs the line between electronic and organic instrumentation. Each track presents an incredibly vivid albeit aphotic scene, one with the bewitching KROY at its core. Get "OPINEL" via Bandcamp below and hear it in the mix on Bump In The Hump tonight live from 7-9 PM EDT on Radio Humber alongside new tracks from NC-17, Apashe, Cozway and others. Four Tet - Bootlegs, Demos and VIPs

Kieran Hebdan or KH, more widely known as Four Tet seems to be in the process of unloading a whole host of previously unreleased content. Last year we were treated to his track "Only Human," an incredible weapon which featured the finally cleared sample of Nelly Furtado. Today we're getting more of that kind of quality, albeit seemingly uncleared. At the time of writing, Hebdan has posted seven tracks, ranging from alternate versions of his own productions to bootlegs like that of "Only Human."
The first, and likely most exciting track, "LMB KH version" also found fame in his 2018 Essential Mix. The drumline early on in the track reveals it to be his beautiful take on Destiny's Child's "Lose My Breath." Ridiculously resplendent and overflowing with luster, it is exactly what we've come to love about Four Tet/KH. The following two tracks revert back to the Four Tet name as "Angel Echoes" get a VIP version with an upped tempo, while "128 oceans" seems to be a demo from his recent album, Sixteen Oceans. Another KH hit comes next as the percussion again runs rampant in "KH my money's gone." I'm not clear on whether this is a remix or where the sample is from, but it seems this has been played in sets or mixes before as there are a couple comments indicating anticipation around its release. Like the Destiny's Child before, this is another epic, powerful and acid touched offering, which removes int from the following three releases. These last three "Filter drums 132," "Raga to midi W" and "MTS guitar demo" are more generally ethereal and largely unfinished. However this does not preclude them from being brilliant in their own right as "Filter drums 132" has a real sweep you off your feet quality, while the latter two showcase thoughtful, introspective qualities which would make them perfect for mediation and yoga.

Each of these seven tracks is available absolutely free, and in the event that more are released, I will update below. Otherwise, enjoy and be sure to follow Four Tet's socials below for more of his magic.

UPDATE: two more tracks "boy is mine respect" and "Mariah resting her feet on her turntable (Martyn edit)" were uploaded shortly after this post was made. They have been added to the playlist above. Also the Destiny's Child KH version has been deleted. However there are certainly copies circulating.

UPDATE 2: The content dump continues into its second day. Eight new tracks have been added bringing the grand total to 16. He's since tweeted that "SoSick KH VERSION" was the last of them and to be quick with the downloads as they may be taken down. Enjoy while you can!

Jamie xx - Essential Mix (2020)

The genius that is Jamie xx graced the Essential Mix for a sophomore spin this past weekend. Fresh off his first release in five years "Idontknow," this new two hour exhibition is exactly what makes the Grammy nominated producer such a unique, can't miss talent.

There aren't many that occupy the same space as Jamie xx and it certainly shows here. That isn't to say that this mix is all xx or artists like him, but rather it is eclectic and varied just like "Idontknow." There's many moods amidst the mountains of movement in the mix as Jamie xx leans into all kinds of instrumentation, setting several scenes and soundscapes. It's all generally dance oriented, and often club inspired, but what Jamie xx does with the likes of Mystic Force, Vladimir Dubyshkin, Peter Gabriel, Pangaea and others is inspired. He sets up each move with incredible ease, never better noted than in the succession of LaTour's "People Are Still Having Sex" into percussive romp at the core of "Idontknow." This is also where this Essential Mix really seems to hit its stride as the next half hour is almost entirely dominated by the drums, again mixed together masterfully.

Without going into any further detail, I will close by saying that fans of Jamie xx will not be disappointed in this two hour expanse, nor will those looking for new music as this tracklist (here) is all but entirely unknown to me. Stream via Soundcloud below and visit the official program page here.

Enlightened Listening for April 24

And just like that it's Friday again. This week's Enlightened Listening features 25 new releases ranging from emotional James Blake to banging DnB, new Duck Sauce and some top notch tech house. Of course 25 releases are too many to tackle individually so instead I'll do a quicker rundown here, but you can still find each release logged after the Spotify playlist below and I still suggest exploring the full thing before settling in on a section you enjoy. Have a great weekend and stay safe!

Things open easy with a couple cool cuts: 1) the aforementioned James Blake and 2) the classic Clams Casino/Imogen Heap joint "I'm God." We then turn dreamy and expansive with the latest ADID offering which is then followed by a little more buoyant EP in Agony. Matt Fax then dazzles with an incredible album that 1) lives up to its title and 2) does an amazing job transporting listeners through its massive hour long journey. Another epic, yet slightly more minimal sonic voyage, Rodriguez Jr.'s Blisss too lives up to its beatific title. Turning even more techy, Kompakt boss Michael Mayer finally releases on his own imprint and it does not disappoint. Next up is perhaps my favourite release of the day Fort Romeau's Fantasia whose title track captured my attention faster than any other in this playlist.

Approaching the midway point, the legendary Booka Shade's latest single gets a big, brilliant and dramatic remix from Casper Cole. Progression rules the roost with the next two EPs as La Fleur and Port Manteau offer a couple intriguing tracks each. Taking a groovy turn, Tensnake offers up his hot hand with a trio of takes on Kasper Bjørke's cover of The Alessi Brothers. After that it's the highly anticipated Duck Sauce single "I Don't Mind" which sees Dave 1 join the writing team. Two sublime singles from SG Lewis and Jessie Ware follow that, each getting us excited for their larger forthcoming releases. Finally, closing out this section is Jacques Greene whose genius extends to a remix of Nicolas Godin's cool creation "Catch Yourself Falling," led by the always awesome Alexis Taylor.

In this final section there's a ton of DnB and we get it started with an extended mix of Flume and Toro y Moi's "The Difference" (ie the only way it could get better). Next up it's an incredible Sub Focus and Wilkinson collab, only made more amazing by the fact that the breakbeat drums are done live by the latter UK legend. Friction and Raineman (by way of his two remixes) follow that with three fantastic flourish driven DnB joints. Turning a touch darker, Cyantific's tumbling track leads us into another monstrous René LaVice release, this one in support of the NHS. Bookending the DnB is "Oculus" a vivid and colourful cut from Jack Mirror and Champion. The penultimate release in this list comes from the consistently killer Izzy Vadim who drops two inspired and unique bass tracks. Finally, Cozway makes his Deadbeats debut with the absolutely sick sensation "Camouflage" featuring Laura Hahn.

James Blake - You're Too Precious

Clams Casino & Imogen Heap - I'm God

Slow Hearts - Melanda

Michael & Levan x Stiven Rivic - Agony

Matt Fax - Progressions

Rodriguez Jr. - Blisss

Throwback Thursday: Cashmere Cat - With Me

After feeling largely uninspired today, I played through a bunch of oldies, remembered some good times and tossed around a bunch of ideas for Throwback Thursday posts, but for the most part couldn't shake the malaise that shrouded my psyche. So instead of a longer, more detailed write-up I've opted to get right to the point with this incredible Cashmere Cat track. "With Me," the first track I ever heard from the Norwegian wunderkind, is an all-time epic. It showcases the breathtaking beauty so often found at the heart of his tracks, as well as the inspired play with both the tremendous tension and potent percussion. The finale is perhaps one of the most powerful, edifying and uplifting releases I've ever encountered. It is ridiculously resonant no matter whether on ear buds or a proper system, and it is with the latter that I recall saying "there's nowhere I'd rather be than in the arms of Cashmere Cat's music," as it poured out of the speakers at The Hoxton. Enjoy below and be sure to check out Wedding Bells and Mirror Maru.FOLLOW CASHMERE CAT: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Deviant Audio - Deviations

While I usually like to limit these sneak peek posts to a track or two that mirror the theme of the episode, there was just one release that could do that this week. The 14 track Deviations compilation, out now on Stranjah's Deviant Audio, showcases a slew of talent in the jungle/DnB/footwork sphere.

There's artists from across the globe but it is, at its core, a Toronto record, playing home to Groves, David Louis, and Eytan Tobin among others. Their tracks make up nearly the entire middle third of tonight's episode as we enjoy eight of the 14 offerings.

Get transported to the Deviant Audio universe below and catch much of it in the mix on Bump In The Hump tonight from 7-9 EDT on Radio Humber or as cataloged on Mixcloud after the fact, here.FOLLOW DEVIANT AUDIO: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Orbital - Chime (Pimms Bmore Remix)

Bristol and Brighton cross paths on my latest find from Soundcloud's The Upload feature. It sees the former's Freddy Pimms taking on the latter's seminal classic "Chime" by groundbreaking duo Orbital. Originally released in 1989, the Hartnoll brothers' acid house offering has received countless remixes, edits and covers from the likes of The Shapeshifters, Joey Beltram and others. Here Pimms relights its rave resplendence with a Baltimore breakbeat remix. While certainly taking place in the same soundscape, this new direction gives "Chime" a largely novel feel. The new bounce from both the bmore bassline and propulsive percussion keep the track feeling fresh and fun, while the familiar core of "Chime" grounds the experience in nostalgia. Personally, I find this mix particularly nostalgic as I have a fondness for both bmore and breaks - two of my earliest loves in electronic music. They work quite well with "Chime" and Pimms has certainly taken advantage of that fact. Get it free now here.FOLLOW ORBITAL: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Mike Dean - 4:20

Whether you know the name Mike Dean or not, you've definitely heard his productions. With credits ranging from Kanye and Jay-Z to 2Pac and Nate Dogg, the Grammy winning producer and multi-instrumentalist has a catalog that can rival just about anyone. Today however he shares more in common with Jean-Michel Jarre than his dirty south roots.

Spanning 28 tracks and 93 minutes, Dean's debut solo album 4:20 features seven distinct sections or themes, each assigned a day (and/or night). Like the aforementioned Jarre, Dean delivers each section as a seamless series of parts (with as many as 10 combining to create one epic idea or mood). Also Ă  la Jarre, 4:20 sees Dean's fingers dance across a synth, often soloing or with minimal backing.

The soundscapes created here are often psychedelic; perfect for today's festivities. As far as recent releases go there is no better album for playing from front to back, either lying on your bed in complete darkness or walking through the park - 100% guaranteed to take you places. Of course 4:20 is even more powerful while social distancing, as it further pulls you into your own consciousness, full of unfettered thoughts and feelings. So, like drug of the day, be sure to consume safely. Do so now here.

Enlightened Listening for April 17

Days and weeks are blurring together, so here's some new music to get lost in. This week's Enlightened Listening includes an incredible album from Hodge, the triumphant return of Jamie xx, a bunch of DnB, a ton of tech and some fun grooves in the finale. Listen through it all via Spotify below and find each release linked after the jump alongside a brief description. Enjoy and stay safe and sane!

Hodge - Shadows In Blue
A brilliant, cohesive and somehow diverse album. Incredible soundscapes that feel warm and welcoming. Not sure who I'd compare it to although Jamie xx comes to mind, but that's likely just recency bias.

Jamie xx - Idontknow
Masterful moving genius. There's so much to like here. Right back on that In Colour/"Gosh" quality.

Joji - Gimme Love
Can't say I know much, if really anything, about Joji, but I can say that this is awesome. I'm far more drawn to the upbeat first half, but the touching back half is beautiful nonetheless.

Bensley ft. Sarah Carmonsino - Secrets
The namesake original came out with the album, so this is really about Flite's fire remix. Builds brilliantly upon the aura of the original while working it into a much heavier, punchier production.

Urbandawn - Together Again (I Pray)
Divine DnB that's got both a banging get-down and propulsive, uplifting energy, especially through its vocals.

BCee - Griffins
Having Gramma Funk on the first track is an excellent indication just how groovy this EP is. No need to do any work, just crank this and you body will do the rest. Ridiculously infectious and fun.

YehMe2 - Keys To The Jeep (ft. Rome Fortune)
An inescapable house banger. The flow and beat match perfectly. Special props to the car alarm/horn samples.

Various Artists - In Flames / Radiate / Whisperings
Three equally epic techno tracks. "In Flames" flutters into the warped resplendence of "Radiate" while "Whisperings" doubles down on both, delivering a brooding obsidian conscience.

MĂ²o & Jo - Jupiter
Bibliothèque Records are quickly becoming one of my favourite labels as of late. Each of these tracks are excellent examples of the subtle, progressive strength I've come to love from their releases. Like Unknown Motive's "Chemistry," I'm sure one, if not both, of these will stay with me deep into the year.

Issac - Clavel
As epic as the last two releases are, neither quite compares to the 9.5 minute average length of the tracks here. Issac really lets each track breathe and grow. I'm drawn most to "Rimel," but I quite enjoy the guitar in both versions of "It's An Extreme Life."

Disciples - Only The Gods / Better On My Own
Was just thinking about Anabel Englund yesterday so this is a welcome treat. Two dope, deep house cuts.

Yung Bae ft. bbno$ - Bad Boy (Low Steppa Remix)
I definitely did not see this one coming, but I'm absolutely here for it. Low Steppa delivers his usual quality which only increases the already catchy nature of the original.

DiRTY RADiO & Jafunk - The Baddest
Any track that starts like this is a winner in my books. Fun, easy-grooving funk.

Fakear & Alex Metric - Carrie
What language is this? Doesn't matter. The music is more than enough for me. Delicate and divine, it's a bed I'd love to lay in until the end of lockdown.

The Nights - Without You (Qrion Remix)
Can't remember the last time Qrion released a track I wasn't a fan of. Here she sends the deep original soaring off into the sunset.

Throwback Thursday: Katy B x Geeneus x Jessie Ware - Aaliyah

At some point today I decided I'd do a Throwback Thursday post and I tossed around a couple ideas, largely centered around incredible vocal performances. I thought about Gregor Salto and Funkin Matt's remix of Mariah Carey, Syn Cole's remix of Jennifer Lopez, Anabel Englund with Lee Foss and MK (either "Electricity" or "Ghost In The System") or MK's remix of HAIM. However as I listened to the latter on YouTube, my eyes were drawn to the name Julio Bashmore which reminded me of his work with Jessie Ware and in turn I was reminded of her track with Geeneus and Katy B.

Behold 2012's utterly breath-taking "Aaliyah." I'll start by saying that even on today's third listen, this time as the two divas sang live at Wireless Festival 2013 (see here), I was nearly brought to tears by the rush of endorphins as Jessie Ware came out for the second verse. These are two of my all-time favourite vocalists, both delicate and divine while remaining ridiculously powerful despite their restrained delivery. They both spin silky and sublime webs with their bewitching warmth. And it is this incredibly captivating and catchy quality that makes Geeneus' groovy bed such can't miss magic. The bounce is clean, crisp and beautiful. It flows fantastically through each verse and chorus letting its ever expanding luxuriousness lift up each vocal. This is never better noted than in the invigorating second verse in which Ware's whisper quiet vocals clash with the electrifying clicks and bleeps. There's no hope here but to give in to the groovy gorgeousness and bow down at the feet of this trio as they work their witchcraft/wizardry. The aura of "Aaliyah" is truly transfixing. Breath in its brilliance below.FOLLOW KATY B: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Party Central Transmission w/ Kane West

Montreal mainstays, the Sontag brothers have been busy in conversation lately. Of course Tiga's acclaimed podcast First/Last Party On Earth is back, with big names Four Tet and Boys Noize kicking off its sophomore season. The second Sontag, Thomas Von Party, has seemingly relaunched his Party Central Transmission series, which was originally meant to be only music and no talk. However just over a year after the lone episode in said format, Von Party has tapped his DJ, Move Your Body collaborator Gus Lobban, aka Kane West, for a conversation.

A combo mix/interview, the two chat about their first interactions, Kane's conspicuous remix of "Let's Go Dancing," the DMT trip that led to "Yes, Exactly," Kane's work with Kero Kero Bonito and PC Music as well as his concept of kitsch in music, and finally, their thoughts about the consequences of COVID-19 on streaming, the entertainment industry and the future at large. While the music can be a bit of a distraction at times, this nearly 40 minute transmission is chock full of enlightening nuggets.FOLLOW THOMAS VON PARTY: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Mat.Joe - Off Ma Mind

Berlin-based duo Mat.Joe have a new earworm on their hands. Released Friday to Nothing Else Matters, "Off Ma Mind" delivers classic dance vibes through its dark electronic bed and catchy vocal lead. Offering up an 80's style allure, it seems at worst a spiritual sibling to the likes of The Human League and Yaz(oo), or even 'better,' a more polished version of said 80's synthpop. The percussion is cold and crispy and stays fresh with a flurry of effects which propel the track forward. But really, it's all about the brooding bassline and hypnotic vocals, both of which send "Off Ma Mind" deep into your subconscious. An easily enjoyed earworm that requires care not to carry it around for days. Get it here.FOLLOW MAT.JOE: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Enlightened Listening for April 10

This week I've whipped together a can't miss edition of Enlightened Listening. Each of the 15 releases here are exceptional and I have to recommend a full play-through from the new Gorillaz to the latest godly Local Dialect in "Perseus" to Apashe's magnum opus Renaissance and finally Nina Las Vegas' "Impossible." However, I'm not going to do the full rundown as I'm cramped for time today. Instead I'll provide a bit of a road-map through the playlist below.

Funky, disco and house grooves rule the first third with strong, sample-driven tracks from Diplo, Wax Motif and Discotron closing out said section. Turning more-tech driven, EPs from the duos of each Cowboy Rhythmbox. BSOD (Steve Duda and deadmau5) and 29 Palms (Boreta and Ooah from The Glitch Mob) are amazing, Orbital's remix of Joris Voorn is simply fabulous and, as mentioned above, Local Dialect are once again divine. In the final third, Morgan Geist leaves me agape at the utter brilliance of his Caribou "Never Come Back" mix, as does the work of both Squarepusher and Apashe. Finally X&G's EP powers us into the almost Tokyo Drift quality of Nina Las Vegas' "Impossible." Enjoy!

Gorillaz - Aries (ft. Peter Hook and Georgia)

Coucheron & Pasha - Lighthouse (ft. Soul Gem)

Kiesza - Crave

Diplo & Wax Motif - Love To The World

BSOD - No Way, Get Real

Joris Voorn - Never (Orbital Remix)

Local Dialect & Las Von - Perseus / Flote

29 Palms - Nobody Horizon

Cowboy Rhythmbox - 6AM Cowboy

Caribou - Never Come Back (Morgan Geist Remix)

Squarepusher - Lamental

Apashe - Renaissance

X&G - Losing Myself

Nina Las Vegas - Impossible (ft. Thai Chi Rosé)

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Ellie Goulding - Burn (Kelmo Bootleg)

One of a number of artists making their Bump In The Hump debuts tonight, Toronto's Kelmo has caught fire with his new bootleg of Ellie Golding's "Burn." Already receiving support from fellow Torontonian René LaVice and his international audience, this fabulous freebie makes masterful use of Goulding's gorgeous vocals while supporting them with an energizing and uplifting DnB bed. Once again drum and bass looms large in this episode of Bump In The Hump as each of the final five tracks occupy that sphere of sound, as does this week's episode of My Mixtape from Jake Robertz.
