I'm not certain but this is likely the largest edition of Enlightened Listening ever. Stretching across nearly 80 tracks and over six hours, it features five albums and has its fair share of groovers and bangers.
The first two albums, Daktyl's UNREALITY and Caribou's Suddenly, have had me waiting with bated breath and show off both artists' incredible and thoughtful craftsmanship. The same can be said for the third album in the playlist, Tycho's Simulcast, although I can't say I was aware of its immanence. As to be expected with Tycho, it is utterly gorgeous and warm, preparing us for the long summer days that lie ahead. Turning more electronic and jacking up the funky groove meter, Wajatta's (the combination of Reggie Watts & John Tejada) sophomore album is sensational and sure to inspire more than a smile or two. Equally uplifting and groovy, Yuksek's feature-laden NOSSO RITMO will be undeniable at beach parties everywhere.
Speaking of outdoor events, I hope Sébastien Léger is one of the artists TBA at the All Day I Dream event in Toronto July 18th (here). His third EP for them is another amazing one, as mystical and moving as ever. Picking up with a more driving beat, Colyn comes through Rose Avenue Records with two powerful cinematic numbers. Even more driving, HUNTER reconnects with Roshin for fat joint "Floating." The enigmatic genius of Prins Thomas follows that up with a gritty growler in "Graut" which also receives a wicked and warped remix from Fango. Bridging the gap from the techno to the DnB that's still to come are two unreal originals from HomeSick in "Ampgain" and "Closer."
Immediately capturing my attention, J Majik lives up to his name with a godly remix of Joris Voorn's "Messiah." Flames erupt as Brookes Brothers and Kove follow that with the irresistible Kathy Brown led "Burn." Things really get lit with the return of 13 who is followed by a record I cannot say enough about, SBK.'s "One Man." I know we're still just in the second month of the year but I'm positive it will be in my best of the year list. Another man who is sure to find himself in year end lists is Apashe who delivers another ridiculous single ahead of Renaissance. Turning towards house, BROHUG brings us to the final true banger of this playlist, unhinged heater "Party Out."
Making the transition from house to disco both in the playlist itself and in a single track, CastNowski's "Deep Down" is fabulously funky fun. Next up in that same vein is Mercer who drops a dope bass-line on Bob Sinclar's "I Feel For You." Moving more organic, Duck Sauce's "Get To Steppin" leads us right into our finale, The Shapeshifters' follow up to "Life Is A Dancefloor," the sublime "Second Chance."

The frenetic world of electronic music is full of distractions and diversions, hindering the ability to find transcendent music. Let Oggie James be your guru and lead down the path to musical Enlightenment. Album, song and event reviews, mixtapes, and radio shows, light the way to Enlightenment, conveyed by Oggie James.

Stephan Jolk - Afterlife Voyage 019
Italian techno upstart Stephan Jolk stepped into the spotlight yesterday with an hour of unreleased material as part of the 19th edition of the Afterlife Voyage mix series. Much like the Innellea offering I shared here, this mix gives incredible insight into what the artists are cooking up in studio and it is certainly some tasty techno. Epic, spacious and/or spacial, Stephan Jolk's hour is an easy listen from beginning to end - particularly potent as I shoveled my snow-filled driveway. Being that it is all IDs there aren't many obvious tracks or moments to point out because it's as much about the journey as it is tracks themselves - another excellent example of whole being more than the sum of its parts. That said I will direct your attention to two points of interest: a sick, squelchy number starting shortly after the 14 minute mark and what seems to be a uber cool remix of Era "Ameno" arising at about 38:40. Listen to the latest Afterlife Voyage mix below and be on the lookout for forthcoming Stephan Jolk in the future!FOLLOW STEPHAN JOLK: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Rhyot - In Ruin EP
EMERCIVE label boss Rhyot is no stranger to immersive electronic tracks that transport its listeners through time and space. This is a running theme not only though the EMERCIVE catalog, but more recently so in his three-part In Ruin EP. Over the course of these 20 minutes, Rhyot guides listeners through a barren dystopian wasteland in search of the hope necessary to restart civilization. Ultimately succumbing to certain death, In Ruin's dark proposition leaves listeners rattled and anxiety-ridden as this foreboding future sits firmly in the mind's eye. Enter into the engrossing and agitating In Ruin EP here and catch a cut live in the mix on Bump In The Hump tonight from 7-9 EST on Radio Humber.FOLLOW RHYOT: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Dr. Apollo & Reid Speed - Unholy
Play Me Records boss Reid Speed has a new DnB EP with fellow Angeleno Dr. Apollo. Released Friday, Unholy / Rebirth is two tracks of furious fire. My favourite of the two, "Unholy" burns bright in spite of its dark theme and black hole heaviness. Alarming and explosive, it feels as though it could be taken from the Alien franchise as it oozes with urgency - a need to destroy the evil evolutionary process set to destroy mankind. Punctuated by various warning bells and spoken word samples, there's no end to the unease found in this track. Wade into the anxiety-ridden unrest of "Unholy" below.FOLLOW DR. HYYTS - Bullet (Paul Woolford Remix)
Few artists are as prolific as Paul Woolford, and perhaps even fewer are as potent when it comes to the use of piano in dance music. Returning to his given name after a couple killer Special Request remixes, Woolford dropped two more remixes this past Friday. Both incredibly powerful and catchy, I've chosen to focus on the driving dynamism and brilliant bounce of "Bullet" instead of the euphoric, rising qualities of "Revival." The gut-punching piano/bongo intro lays the groundwork for this slick banger to grow out of, and boy does this remix really bloom. It doesn't need sunlight or oxygen - it is and has them both in itself. It is life. Being shot with this "Bullet" doesn't do any damage, but rather energizes and uplifts like Mario eating a mushroom. Pull the trigger and level up with Paul Woolford and HYYTS below.FOLLOW HYYTS: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Enlightened Listening for February 21
This week's Enlightened Listening runs through smooth grooves before heading through the house trifecta of deep, disco and bass. There's two killer compilations, an unreal album from Claude VonStroke and a sublime single from Bullion. Enjoy via playlist below, read brief description next and find each individual release linked at the bottom.
Fun, synth-driven singles from Jessy Lanza and Bullion will have you swooning before Sultan + Shepard's Kochi EP thrusts you towards the dance-floor. The next two releases really help you explore the floor as A-Trak & Ferreck Dawn collab "Coming Home" speaks to your soul and Jaded's Ounces inspires eccentric moves. Things turn euphoric and upbeat with the next two as Kiesza conquers another top-end and Will Easton whips up a ravey remix of Duke Dumont's "Therapy." Remixes rule the next two as a trio take on Dombresky (while adding a new original of his own) and legends Kenny Dope and Mat Zo offer up uniquely powerful mixes of Moon Boots. Staying legendary, Freaks & Beaks marks the triumphant return of Claude VonStroke fresh off an excellent Essential Mix last weekend. Finally it's all bass and house as dozens of artists combine over two compilations from Dr. Fresch's The Remedy Vol. 2 (standouts from Cloverdale, Pretence and the doctor himself) and Koos' blanc sur noir, Vol. 3 (standouts from Bellorum, Castion, GODAMN, CYMN and Koos himself).
Jessy Lanza - Lick In Heaven
Bullion - We Had A Good Time
Sultan + Shepard - Kochi
A-Trak & Ferreck Dawn - Coming Home
Jaded - Ounces
Tom Ferry & Kiesza - I Think That I Like You
Duke Dumont - Therapy (Will Easton Remix)
Dombresky - Trust The Process Remixes
Moon Boots ft. Steven Klavier - Tied Up (The Remixes)
Claude VonStroke - Freaks & Beaks

Florentine - WIND ME UP
First appearing on Soundcloud in April of 2016 (at least as far as what's still online), a mysterious producer by the name of Florentine began to gain traction with a tropical future bass remix of Iggy Azalea's "Work." They followed that with 10 more of the same bright bouncy and poppy, percussion driven tracks, each averaging over 10k plays, before ultimately going silent in September of 2018. However it seems like Florentine is back in business as they've now released three new productions starting with Valentine's Day's "BIG." My favourite of this new trio and the focus of this post, "WIND ME UP" delivers an instant kick of warm nostalgia, reminding me of the summer I worked a landscaping job listening to Soundcloud gems like this all day, every day. Clean and crisp it is the percussion that really drives this track but the subtle synths, their movement and the overall atmosphere cannot be understated. Sure seeing a drum line play "WIND ME UP" would be incredibly cool, but it wouldn't have quite the same energizing electricity without the warm, rising undertones. Enjoy new Florentine below.FOLLOW FLORENTINE: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Hudson Lee & Tom Finster - Flymmer
Two weeks ago Bump In The Hump had more drum and bass than ever before and while today doesn't feature any out and out DnB tracks, its influence can certainly be heard in "Flymmer." Released free as part of Inspected's latest compilation, the track has the standard Hudson Lee genre tag custom as it too cannot be cornered into a singular subset. "Flymmer" features a number of phases, modes and moods, and too draws from the DnB background of German producer Tom Finster. A wild ride and a reminder of the vast reaches of the ever expanding electronic music scene, stream "Flymmer" below, get the compilation for free here and catch it in the mix from 7-9 EST tonight on 96.9 FM Radio Humber.FOLLOW HUDSON LEE: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Stevie Wonder - My Cherie Ah Bruk (Capitol A Re-Do)
Sometimes you come across a track and artist you know almost nothing about and sometimes you've just got to write about it anyway. Who Capitol A is, where he's from, and even how his name is properly spelled, is a mystery to me. However I can tell you that he's taken on Stevie Wonder classic "My Cherie Amour" giving it new afro flavour. The fifty year old soul single now features funky synth squelches, deep grooves and plenty of propulsive percussion. It may not be quite as divine or sensually smooth as the original, but what it lacks in organic ease it makes up for in stimulating electronics. An arousing re-do, Capitol A has worked wonders around Stevie and I for one am here for this jam session.FOLLOW CAPITOL A: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Enlightened Listening for February 14
After last week's 14 track edition of Enlightened Listening we're back to big business here with 16 releases and nearly 50 tracks. This week features the long anticipated release of Tame Impala's The Slow Rush, the second ever offering from No Neon and tons of incredible techno. Enjoy via playlist after the break, find each release linked individually linked at the bottom and read brief descriptions next.
Opening this epic 4 hour 21 minute journey is of course Tame Impala and his increasingly electronic album The Slow Rush. A perfect place to start if I do say so myself. Murtagh follows the psychedelic LP with a couple moving cuts before No Mana transports us his sensational Secret Level. Diverse in its delivery, there's a lot to like in this album as its power grows progressively stronger. The robust roll-out continues as Mathame make massive waves with For Every Forever on Afterlife. Staying supremely strong, we're then treated to two new Marc Romboy multitudes (something I'd been craving and searching for as recently as yesterday).
This year has already offered up some ridiculously awesome tunes and the basis of this next EP is yet another. Market Memories' "Rain Dance" is beyond brilliant and both ABSOLUTE. and Doppel deliver dope remixes. Like I said last month I'm already excited about this year's best of list and you better believe one of these three versions will make this cut. It is that cool.
Turning more epic in their arc and delivery (as if that were possible), the next two releases are masterclasses in movement as No Neon welcomes Craig Williams & Pantheon and Glenn Morrison taps Petar Dundov for a resplendent remix of his already divine "Tangerine Dream." Yotto and Colyn then take us on two equally alluring journeys through Joris Voorn's Four. Moonwalk then have me hyperventilating with "Salem," my favourite of the awesome 3 track Alba EP.
After the dark burn of "Phoenix," Luttrell and Dusky bring the playlist back into the light with "Some Other Time" and Life Signs Vol. 2, respectively. The fun and funkiness of the latter then lead into an absolutely brilliant and slick Botnek production "Take Me Higher." The acid get-down of that leads very nicely into a jaw-dropping version of all-time classic "Sweet Dreams" courtesy Average Gypsy.
Finally, the playlist closes with yet another incredible Peggy Gou production, "Jigoo" with Maurice Fulton, only to be followed by an utterly euphoric take on Myd's "Superdiscoteca" from nit.
Tame Impala - The Slow Rush

No Mana - Secret Level

Throwback Thursday: Flux Pavilion ft. Example - Daydreamer (Jack Beats Remix)
After my iPod shuffled into some nostalgia as I made my way home last night, I figured it was time to recall the incredible power of Jack Beats' genius remix of Flux Pavilion "Daydreamer."
Keen observers will note my Throwback Thursday posts primarily take place around 2010 (give or take a few years) and this is no different. At the time this track was released I was perhaps on my biggest Jack Beats kick as they has just dropped their Donae'o collab "You Should Know" and were not far from releasing their inspired OWSLA debut Somebody To Love.
While I go back through these records I'm in awe of the duo's always impactful production whether tempered and toned down as in "Storm," absolutely bonkers in the beats of "Elevator Music," dope and dynamic as in "Labyrinth," or all of the above as in this remix. "Daydreamer" may just be the best example of Jack Beats' brilliance. Its rubber-band bassline is incredibly bouncy and plays perfectly with the crisp percussion, crackling top line and Example's vocals. They are masters of mixing these elements together, so much so that you often know exactly what's coming and when. The trick here though is that they make the ride ridiculously fun as they send the tension careening up and down like a roller-coaster. Further to this metaphor, "Daydreamer" is no rickety old wooden roller-coaster, but rather an elaborate and visceral affair sure to churn your stomach in ways you cannot give words to. The scorching synths, guttural growls and cartoonish effects are absolutely the lead of the track and you know what I'm referring to not because I've described them well but rather that they are so stunning and unique that you feel them in your very core.
Whether this is your kind of music or not, you cannot listen to "Daydreamer" and be unchanged. And isn't that the magic of not just Jack Beats, or even electronic music, but music as a whole? Once you feel it, you're forever changed, perpetually striving to relive that first, ever-so powerful feeling.FOLLOW FLUX PAVILION: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Hurlee - Favorite Jazz
At the end of last month Spanish producer Hurlee shared a three track EP entitled La Touche on Suol Records. As its name suggests, the EP has a funky French touch throughout as the Spaniard puts his spin on GQ and Billy Ocean. The latter appears with Kanye through sampled interviews as Ocean's "Stay The Night" lays the brass-punctuated bed of "Favorite Jazz." It is indeed the sublime sample of Ocean that drives the track, but Hurlee's work around is not without merit. He lets it lead while still coaxing it towards a more, cool jazzy feel that still thumps through its house beats. It's this smartly situated position that allows it to be easily consumed as beautiful background beats or more upfront in an all-night disco set. AC Slater + Pals - Live @ Sound (Jan 30, 2020)
The crew at Night Bass are sharing sets from their recent January 30th takeover of Sound Nightclub in LA. They've posted each of the night's sets (here). Coming in at over four hours of banging house beats and running through the likes of David Steven, Petey Clicks, and BIJOU, the night is capped by a massive B2B led by AC Slater. The collaborative set features both the Night Bass boss and the aforementioned Clicks, as well as heavy hitters Jack Beats, Hotfire and Qlank. A massive who's who of floor-filling talent, the bass in this set is sure to shake its listeners to the core. Deep and ridiculously powerful, the set pulses with energy throughout. It's easy to get lost in, but that doesn't mean there aren't highlights either. IDs and nostalgic tracks knock alike. Kick it with the killer quintet now below.

Enlightened Listening for February 7
After an epic six hour edition of Enlightened Listening last week, we've got a tight hour this week. It features an easy-going poppy intro moving through deep-house and disco before closing with club cuts and bass/g-house bangers.
Just before going to bed last night I caught the first new Bearcubs in a while and immediate fell for its sublime subtlety, which reminded me of SBTRKT. "Overthinking" is followed by another return from hiatus in Jack Garratt's "Time." Moving and beautiful it is exactly the kind of song that recaptures the love and passion Garratt incited in his fans. Captivating vocals continue to rule the roost as Amtrac glides in with glorious glistening groove "Accountable."
Phaeleh then follows with a touch of two-step which borders brilliantly between easy-going and energizing. Much like "Unity," Rylan Taggart's EP on This Never Happened is as enjoyable lying in bed as it is in the club. Staying hot Mat Zo is back on Anjunabeats with percussion-led affair "The Next Chapter."
The page then turns as disco enters via my favourite track of the list in Alan Fitzpatrick's fantastic Fully Charged Mix of Patrice Rushen. More piano power comes in as Yuksek graces Glitterbox for a gorgeous take on Risk Assessment. Bridging the gap between the hard hitting house still to come and the aforementioned disco, GRiZ gets funky with a club mix of "Could U" on Night Bass.
Finally it's time for fire and VOLAC brings us there, even if slightly understated, with the bumpy ride that is "Baby Boy." Stumbling towards the end of this Enlightened Listening, Walker & Royce get sneaky with their sick remix of "Loaded." Finally it's time to pay the tab as BIJOU makes it rain with menacing cut "Benjamins." Find everything via playlist below with individual links at the bottom. Enjoy!

BIJOU - Benjamins (ft. Wifisfuneral)

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Moon Rush - Ex Machina
With Bump In The Hump being an entirely new show every week you never really know just what you're going to get. Most weeks are largely house with a sprinkling of dubstep, others more techno and trap oriented. This week strays from all of the above as it's almost entirely made up of DnB, midtempo and psy-trance. Of the few artists across the country that deal in the latter, Moon Rush are on a roll, racking up a handful of fire releases in the last couple months. Their latest "Ex Machina" shows not just the duo's #HARDPSY power, but also their cinematic capabilities. The movement and storytelling in this tight three minute affair is incredible, propelling listeners into a detailed dystopia. Stream below, get it via Harsh Records here, and catch it live in the mix from 7-9 PM EST tonight on Radio Humber.FOLLOW MOON RUSH: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Ash Reynolds - Live Together
Timmy Thomas' timeless classic "Why Can't We Live Together" remains as powerful and poignant as ever. It's been covered and sampled countless times, and this weekend it got another update courtesy London's Ash Reynolds. Dealing mainly in disco and funk, Reynolds has stuck to the stripped-down soul roots of the original 1972 recording while adding a tasteful house backing. The captivating and cool organ still sends shivers down your spine, creeping and crawling atop the new percussive bed. And of course Thomas' vocals remain as passionate and pure as ever. However, Reynolds has done more than just put a house beat on the immaculate original, he's given it a subtle, moving groove that fits in almost invisibly it's such a perfect pairing. Stirring both lyrically and now even more so musically, stream Ash Reynolds' 2020 update of the all-time classic "Why Can't We Live Together" below.FOLLOW ASH REYNOLDS: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER
