Jamie Jones & Alan Fitzpatrick - Sundancing

A couple legends have teamed up for two incredibly inspired collaborations. Fairytale Frequency, out now on Hot Creations, sees Jamie Jones and Alan Fitzpatrick match wits in truly timeless fashion. To little surprise, I'm more drawn to the beatific b-side "Sundancing." Simply sublime, it sails upon rhapsodic waves of warmth, ebbing and flowing fabulously through its buoyant, Balearic bassline. The subtle swells and sparkles make "Sundancing" a soothing and stunning cap to an overnight set; an aubade to beckon our star above the horizon. Get it now here and enjoy Jones' new Essential Mix.FOLLOW JAMIE JONES: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Backstage with Elazion and Odesho

Thursday night marked two firsts for me as I joined Elazion on his podcast. It was both my first podcast and my first time as the guest in an interview. In the nearly hour and a half conversation we touched on several subjects, mostly around my role as a radio host and blogger, but of course we dive deeper into a wider swath. There's a fair amount of insight into my process and history, as well as a ton of recommendations which I'll detail below. Get the episode on iTunes, StitcherCastbox & others here.
Recommendations, in the order they arise in the episode...

DJ Flipout/Skratch Bastid/Red Bull 3Style: DJ/MC associated with both Virgin Radio Vancouver and the Red Bull 3Style DJ competition. DJ/Global Ambassador for the Red Bull 3Style DJ competition. Both great Twitter follows.

Repost-Toggle for Soundcloud: An Chrome extension I use to streamline my feed.

Nero - Symphony 2808: My first encounter with electronic music re-imagined in an orchestral/symphonic format.

Pete Tong, Jules Buckley & The Heritage Orchestra - Ibiza Prom: The start of Pete Tong's venture into the orchestral realm, with a studio album of this concert (here) and two more after (below).

Pete Tong Ibiza Classics: A second orchestral album of re-imagined Ibiza classics.

Pete Tong - Chilled Classics: A third orchestral album with a mix of original productions and classic re-imaginings.

Ed Banger 15: Orchestral versions of classic Ed Banger releases celebrating their 15th anniversary. See live concert here.

Yanni: An incredible composer/producer/etc. Countless fantastic tracks and albums, but his live The Concert Event album was the one that hooked me, even better enjoyed if you watch the live videos.

Skratch Bastid & Afiara Quartet - Spin Cycle: A brilliant experiment combining scratching and strings. Also best enjoyed with accompanying video. See full concert at Koerner Hall here.

Skratch Bastid - Kenny Rodgers Tributes: Pretty self explanatory. Turntable tributes to The Gambler. First video here and a followup here.

Porter Robinson Monstercat Showcase: My peak Porter enjoyment. One of my favourite mixes of all-time.

Knife Party Essential Mix: One of the most incredible debut sets/Essential Mixes. Peak Knife Party.

Score: A Film Music Documentary: A fantastic doc on some of the major players in "the world's most widely known music genre" with interviews from John Williams, Danny Elfman, Hans Zimmer, etc.

Queen Of The South: One of my favourite TV shows, scored by Giorgio Moroder.

Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul: Incredible music direction. Particularly in the montage scenes. Two stand out in particular, at least in recent memory, both from Better Call Saul. BADBADNOTGOOD - Can't Leave The Night and Todd Terje - Alfonso Muskedunder.

The Wire: Every time I think back to the month or two it took me to binge it, I'm filled with nostalgia and the desire to relive what is widely considered to be the best TV show ever.

Explained - Music: Incredible, informative and logic-based mini doc on music. Narrated by Carly Rae Jepsen and featuring TOKiMONSTA.

The Nature Of Things - Sonic Magic: The Wonder and Science of Sound: Another incredible documentary, detailing the magic behind music and its multi-sensory qualities.

It's All Gone Pete Tong: The 'true story' of a DJ who goes deaf, but continues to produce through vibrations.

Daft Punk, Nile Rodgers, Pharrell, & Stevie Wonder: Perhaps my favourite ever Grammy performance.

The Night: A Nero 'side-project' between Alana Watson and Dan Stephens. Meanwhile Joseph Ray is doing solo work under his own name.

Enlightened Listening for March 27

We're returning to as close to a normal edition of Enlightened Listening as we can during this COVID-19 pandemic. This week's playlist opens with a trio of exceptional albums, dives deep into dance before turning to techno and hard hitting house. There's a bunch of big names and a whole host of truly top notch releases. Stream below and find brief descriptions after the Spotify embed. Stay safe & enjoy!

Nicolas Jaar - Cenizas
Delicate and moving pieces, largely made up of organic instrumentation. A divine dive, perfect for piquing your palate ahead of a bunch of other brilliant releases.

Robotaki - The Grand Mirage
Each early taste has been sublime and Robotaki has instilled that unique quality throughout.

Louis La Roche - Saturday Night Griever
A feature heavy album, that doesn't feel like the slightest bit disjointed as though it were a bunch of singles slapped together. That said, it often does slap. Really enjoyable and dance friendly.

falcxne - Studio 54
Even more slaps here. Fantastic funky stuff. Worthy of its iconic title.

Duck Sauce - Captain Duck
My favourite Duck Sauce single and sample yet. Unfortunately the extended mix is not on Spotify. Enjoy it in its full glory here.

DJ Fresh - Drive (Skream Remix)
Skream stays hot with this jacking mix. Yet another notch in his belt; is there anything he can't do?

warner case & Subrinse - impeccable
The off-kilter delivery of warner case is back in brilliant form. An instantly catchy, feel good club cut.

CastNowski - I Can Show You
CastNowski's capacity to craft quality house cuts in all its sub-genres is incredible, but I like him best in this more jacking, funky, disco-adjacent style. Groovy baby!

Tensnake ft. Fiora - Automatic (Remixes)
Holy stacked remix package, Batman! Gerd Janson, Kraak & Smaak and a Tensnake VIP?! I'm weak!

ABSOLUTE. - My Love
This man cannot miss. The original is awesome, but like with "String Theory" I'm drawn to the breakbeat VIP. If you're not on the ABSOLUTE. bandwagon yet, you're missing out big time.

Bicep - Atlas
Must I say anything more than new Bicep? I guess that's the point of this post, but really, they speak for themselves. An instant joy. The kind of track we need in these dark days. A ray of hope and light.

Kölsch - Time / Sleeper Must Awaken
See what I mean about a bunch of big names? The usual stunning, epic quality of Kölsch.

Sian - Electricity
Everything this man's put out on mau5trap has been excellent and the same can be said here. Killer crackling cuts that ought to inspire a bout of shadow boxing or a wicked round of an FPS melee.

BROHUG - Mixtape 1
The sick single "Detox" was in this playlist two weeks ago and the rest of the EP lives up to that lofty standard. Ridiculously banging bass house that thrives through exceptional sound design.

Dr. Fresch & FREAK ON - THICCC
Darker and dirtier than the above, believe it or not. I have not looked at the waveform but I can assure you it lives up to its title. This is some fat ish.

Full, Uncut Interview with ASHE

Recorded March 21st on Skype, below is my full conversation with ASHE. Unfortunately we couldn't quite match the magnitude of our in studio chat a year and a half ago, but we did some good catching up amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Topics include: his recent releases (EPs for EMERCIVE and mau5trap as well as a handful of singles), the possibility of scoring video/film in the future, focusing on DJ sets (as compared to the live sets he talked about last time), his penchant for producing multiple versions (VIPs/edits/etc) of his originals, experimenting with different genres, how he's passing the time in lockdown, his loaded release schedule for 2020, and of course his sophomore spin on My Mixtape, which airs Saturday March 28th at 11 PM EDT on Radio Humber. Bump In The Hump: March 25 (Season 9, Episode 22)

Tracklist

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: John Roman - Postlude

One week ago today, literally minutes before Bump In The Hump went live, one of my all-time favourite artists, and one I thought I'd never hear from again, released a massive 18 minute track. John Roman broke his nearly six year silence with "Postlude," seemingly an 8-track medley. Having not lost a step, Roman remains as cutting edge as ever offering up the same sensational techno that made his Petrified and Sala EPs so successful. Obviously epic, being that "Postlude" is presented as a singular track, there's an undeniable cinematic quality, one that re-immerses listeners in Roman's particular idiom. Apt in its end-of-days energy, "Postlude" will be presented in its entirety on tonight's episode of Bump In The Hump, immediately ahead of a clip of my conversation with ASHE, this week's guest on My Mixtape. Proxy - HIGH

Eastblock audio assassin Proxy has a new EP on IN/ROTATION. Released today, the two-part power play features the kind of killer club content we've grown to expect from the Russian rabble-rouser. Straying from my soft spot for b-sides, it's the opener "HIGH" that really gets me going here. A whole house shaker, there's nothing about this track that doesn't kick ass. Its wicked and ridiculously wobbly drops are dirty AF and the points between provide plenty of movement as the brilliant bassline keeps the groove going. It's a shame we won't be able to enjoy this in the club for a while, but best believe "HIGH" is here to help when you need to blow off some steam in self-isolation. Get it now here.FOLLOW PROXY: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Tame Impala - Breathe Deeper (Hoodboi Remix)

Hoodboi is one of many artists putting their time in quarantine to good use. Since Friday alone, he's released two remixes as well as streamed Q & A/production sessions. Friday's remix came in the form of a steamy take on Tame Impala. Seeing it come together on Twitter (here) was a treat, but getting the free download (here) is the cherry on top. Obviously an already gorgeous original, Hoodboi has set the psychedelics of "Breathe Deeper" aside, opting for a brighter, more uplifting and dance-ready approach. Immediately infectious, I knew this was something I wanted in my life mere seconds into five and half minute affair. The glitzy guitar work, pleasing piano and bustling bass groove are all excellent in their own right, especially as they play around the original Impala production, but it is the depths of the disco and joyfulness of this jam that make it such a can't miss. It is the Monday Motivation we all need right now. Get it free via The Artist Union and be sure to follow Hoodboi for more killer quarantine creations.FOLLOW HOODBOI: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Enlightened Listening for March 20

This week's Enlightened Listening is a little different. Instead of hosting all the releases in a Spotify playlist, I've opted to move to Bandcamp because they've waved sales fees for the day in order to help artists dealing with lost income as a result of COVID-19. Sadly Bandcamp does not have a playlist feature, so you'll have to click through to hear each release, and please be patient as they're obviously dealing with higher than normal traffic. Also note that some of the releases are "name your price," so while you don't have to pay, please do if you can. We're all in this together after all. Enjoy, and stay safe and sane.

Nick Bike - March 2020 Edits
Fun, club friendly mashups from the master. Chic vs Doja Cat. Kanye vs Childish Gambino. Etc.

Pat Lok - Party Licks Vol. 1
Funky remixes of classic cuts from Daft Punk, Rihanna, Phoenix, and more.

Ticklish - Ticklish Reboots Vol. 7.2
Juke, footwork and bass takes on popular RnB and rap tracks, including an unreal take on "The Box."

Ase Manual - Fuji Club Music
Even more bass and club focused than the above, Manual always injects energy into his beats.

Jaymie Silk - Diasporave Part 1 and Part 2
Hypnotic and powerful, Silk's productions are always ear-opening and truly inspired.

Martyn Bootyspoon - NO. 1 CRUSH REMIXES
All the acid you can handle in these gorgeous get-downs.

Slick Shoota - True Romance & China Blue (Slick Shoota Bootlegs)
Peak energy. Maybe not the best for quarantine, but we all need to let loose every once in a while.

MSSINGNO - CAYA / GUIDERS / HIGHLIKE2
The enigmatic producer is in fine form with three new sublime singles like only he can craft.

Demora - First Sessions
Persuasion and softcoresoft combine for three live sessions wandering through dub, techno and rave.

CFCF - Blowing Up The Workshop 48
A mix now split up into an album. Expansive and full of organic instrumentation. Perhaps the coolest of all of the releases.

Ekcle - Pearl Jigsaw Remixes
Three equally engrossing remixes, each with their own amazing power and poise.

Kontravoid - Too Deep Remixes
Gothic, industrial remixes. I'm extra partial to these 1) because I absolutely love "Cost Of Life" and 2) I'm getting tastes of Rammstein, especially in Fractions remix of "So It Seems."

Dennis Ferrer - Hey Hey (Riva Starr Paradise Garage Extended Remix)
Defected stays epic. 12 hours of live content on their Youtube and nearly 13 minutes of Riva Starr here.

Paul Chin - Full Spectrum
Brilliant and beautiful throughout. Polished and powerful. Really, really well done. Obviously I'm recommending each of these releases, but this is the one I'd suggest to the most people. That good.

Ric Wilson & The Kount - selfdistance2020
The Kount is everywhere and the world is a better place for it. Couple nice little pick-me-ups here.

Paragon Cause - Lost Cause
The right send off for this list. Stride triumphantly into the dream soundscape led by Opthof's vocals.

Full, Uncut Interview with OVR/UNDR

Last week Trevor Tompkins aka OVR/UNDR, previously half of Audiation, was scheduled to meet me in the Radio Humber studios for an interview ahead of his episode of My Mixtape. However that had to be scrapped due to concerns over COVID-19, so instead we took to Skype. Below is our full conversation in which we discuss: his background, love for bass and bass-face, adding production to his DJ duties, his first ever show as OVR/UNDR (Friday March 13th), when we might hear his first ever original production and his episode of My Mixtape (which includes said first taste of original OVR/UNDR). Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Five Artist Debuts

Part of the countless closures due to COVID-19, Humber is currently shuttered, however the music does not stop, nor do Bump In The Hump or I. There is indeed a new episode in its regular 7-9 PM EDT timeslot, I just won't be live doing it. Because of this I scaled back my commentary, but unfortunately that also means I was unable to give the five artists making their Radio Humber debuts their due. So I'll do so now, with the tracks I'm playing from each in the playlist below.

First a cut from Toronto-based producer Iris Santo's sensational Creator EP which plays with an interstellar enormity. Second, also Toronto-based, by way of Moscow, Soft Matter's first ever original, the twitchy techno track "Muscle Performance." In the middle, a name that Toronto club-goers ought to recognize from the Night Shift series, Mìlu comes through with a machete, killing us with jungle cut "Chandra Dhas." Leaving the 6ix in favour of the west coast, our fourth debut of the night comes from Squamish's dynamic DJ, producer and curator, The Librarian who, like Iris Santo above, offers up galactic genius in "Moon Illusion." Finally a funky fun track closes the night as Montreal duo Chaps & Lemür launch us into a clip of my conversation with OVR/UNDR, this week's guest on My Mixtape.FOLLOW IRIS SANTO: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs - Face 2 Face Mix

Orlando Tobias Edward Higginbottom, better known by another four-part name, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs (or TEED for short) shared an eclectic mix "for kitchen dancing in times of isolation" this past Friday. A mind-blowing melange, this "Face 2 Face Mix" features a host of electronic energizers sure to inspire some interesting dance moves. The grooves grow steadily through more world-type tracks in the open to the seriously jacking Bufiman "Blow Your Head" around the 15 minute mark. Dancing between disco and dark, acid-tinged tracks the next section really showcases TEED's diverse ear and the influences he brings to the fore in this mix. This diversity is perhaps best illustrated in the move from the powerful Anatolian folk techno track "Teleported" by Anunaku to the crisp, pristine piano-led and beautifully buoyant Bag Raiders remix from TEED himself. This theme of incredible movement and multiplicity continues through the second half, but rather than spoil any more of the "Face 2 Face Mix," I'll let you enjoy it unencumbered below. Stay in, stay safe and let's dance this off.FOLLOW TEED: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

wev - poly

Brooklyn based producer wev has shared the first taste of his forthcoming debut album. poly is said to reflect "the many people, places, and things that have influenced [wev] over the past 3 years." The title track itself is a beautiful, elegant illumination. It sparkles with an effervescent top line that would seem to take the lead, much like that of a Four Tet production. However this wholly (and holy if you like) weightless lead is short lived as wev welcomes in a blast of bass and a driving groove around the minute twenty mark. Moving "poly" to a more grounded place, this percussion focused section offers a lot of interplay and growth before reintroducing the ethereal ease we enjoyed earlier. The two play perfectly together, but this is not the end of wev's wonderfully woven groove as "poly" has only reached its midway mark. Eventually adding swirling synths, wev caps the track with a strong cinematic climax and close. A wonderful start to what promises to be an exceptional album, set to be released "soon."

Enlightened Listening for March 13

In part because there's so much great music out today while while also wanting to share as much as possible, to keep people entertained in this time of need, this week's edition of Enlightened Listening is by far the biggest ever. Featuring 54 releases, it's nearly 200 tracks long, running well over 15 hours. Of course it would be impossible to address each of the releases, so I won't even try. Instead, I'll just note that there is a general flow to the playlist below, moving from lighter to heavier records, so depending on what you want or are looking for I recommend clicking around to find a section you like. However, I will recommend that you give each release a go, as the basis of these Enlightened Listening playlists are to open your ears to something new. Anyway, that's all for now. Enjoy and stay safe and healthy!

Full, Uncut Interview with Memphis.

Back for his third interview in as many years, Memphis. talks about his move towards more banging, club/festival friendly tracks. We dig into his first ever DJ set, in New York of all places. He sets the table on his diverse forthcoming catalog and promises a true Memphis. debut set soon. We get a little off the rails with meme and internet talk at the end, but it's all related to Memphis. and music. And of course there's the reason he's back in studio, his third and easily most banging episode of My Mixtape, which airs this Saturday March 14th at 11 PM EDT on Radio Humber. Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: NC-17 - Scrub City / History Of Violence

The theme of DnB's surge in popularity in 2020 continues on Bump In The Hump today as the bar is once again raised with more than a handful of driving cuts on tonight's episode. Toronto's René LaVice isn't the only talent from the 6ix showing off his DnB dexterity as NC-17 has two new tracks on Program. Equally banging and striking soundscapes, one of these two will sit at the heart of tonight's mix as Bump In The Hump dives into a dark future, full of destruction, disorder and despair. Protostar - Overdrive (ft. Emma McGann)

Back with his fourth single in as many months, Dunstable DnB producer Protostar has a hit on his hands with "Overdrive." With two versions, including an instrumental and a vocal cut featuring "Where I Belong" collaborator Emma McGann, "Overdrive" takes me back to one of my favourite times and sound periods: the early 2010s, particularly Nero's Welcome Reality. More than just the powerful female vocals of McGann and Alana Watson, I'm reminded of this era's brilliance through the futuristic soundscape, similarly punchy percussion and buoyant, striding synths. Of course Nero are more widely associated with dubstep, but it's nearly impossible to separate it from DnB and the two are often paired perfectly. Here with "Overdrive," the imagery Protostar creates is both bright and dark in the same sound, like a mix of neo-noir and sci-fi films (think Blade Runner 2049 and Tron: Legacy). It is punchy and propulsive, yet is not at all overwrought or over-the-top. A good headbanger, easily enjoyed with or without its expertly treated vocals, "Overdrive" is a welcome addition to 2020, a year in which DnB continues its assault on the collective consciousness. LO'99 - HANS ZIPPER

Late last month Aussie LO'99 unleashed a high octane EP on Medium Rare Recordings. Both driving house numbers, "THUNDERLOOP" features an engine-like revving lead while its counterpart, "HANS ZIPPER" flies along with pistons firing, sounding like a theme tune for an epic Formula One affair. Immediately momentous, the latter track brings together both the roaring soundtrack feel of Hans Zimmer and the dope, deep grooves I associate with LO'99. "HANS ZIPPER" is a wild ride that only gets better as it goes along, pumping additional adrenaline into your veins as each subsequent element is added. There's multiple payoffs throughout, each excited by brilliant punctuations and effects which keep the track moving forward and full of fun. Buckle in and groove down to "HANS ZIPPER" here.FOLLOW LO'99: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Enlightened Listening for March 6

After last week's epic five album edition of Enlightened Listening we were due for a lower output, but that doesn't mean the quality has been cut. This week I've ditched the conventional build from easy, chill grooves in the opening to fire bangers in the finale and flipped the script. We open with the latest futuristic fire from Slooze who continues to build his incredible apocalyptic catalog of originals. He's followed by the debut release on René LaVice's new label DeVice. Our only album of the week comes next in the explosive followup to Doctor P's landmark Animal Vegetable Mineral, Pt. 1.

That closes out the more conventional bangers as we turn to a top notch track from Todd Terry and Alexander Technique in "Jack The Tek." Staying techy, Mason Maynard shows off his incredible knack for groove and bumping beats in Lookin' At Me. Staying hot and heavy, Cloverdale follow that up with a collaborative EP with Tombz on Country Club Disco. The legendary duo of Booka Shade close out the tech-driven records with two superb singles in their standout style.

Finally we get to the last five records, all of which ought to inspire you to dance. First up, Giraffage offers up some wild power in "Workout." Hoodboi and LEFTI then lean into lush grooves and brilliant bass-lines in the fabulous "4ever." Kiesza continues to reign supreme in 2020 with another spine-tingling slice of pop as we move into "All Of The Feelings." My anticipation for TOPS album I Feel Alive keeps growing as we receive its third single "Colder & Closer," and finally we close with Robotaki's second single of the year, the dynamic and divine "Now That We've Been In Love." Enjoy!

Slooze - Rise

René LaVice - Hollywood (ft. S.P.Y)

Doctor P - Animal Vegetable Mineral, Pt. 2

Todd Terry & Alexander Technique - Jack The Tek

Mason Maynard - Lookin' At Me

Cloverdale & Tombz - Hell Yeah

Booka Shade - Red Medina / Acid Brain

Giraffage - Workout

Hoodboi & LEFTI - 4ever

TOPS - Colder & Closer

Full, Uncut Interview with Brock Edwards & Meech of RYME

A couple weeks ago I had Meech of RYME back into the Radio Humber studios where we were joined by Brock Edwards. The embed below features our full uncut conversation (at least what was recorded). We tackled all things around their upcoming episode of My Mixtape (which premieres Saturday March 7th at 11 PM EST on Radio Humber), their upcoming releases, and their labels, before opening things up more widely for discussions on seemingly everything under the sun (still music related).

Other topics covered: personal problems with social media and award shows, country music vs electronic, the Toronto scene, growing out of the festival/club scene, Meech's thoughts on dubstep, drugs and the scene, the faceless quality of DJ sets that remain in the same key or BPM range, Brock and Meech's disdain for live sets, what a live set really means.
