Enlightened Listening for January 29

While weighing in a hair lighter than last week's hefty harvest, this week's Enlightened Listening is no featherweight. Spanning 20 releases, this 82 track six-hour odyssey is built around a ridiculous number of remixes and a couple killer compilation/mixtapes. Of the latter two, The Magician brings together an all-star lineup for his milestone Magic Tape, #100, while James Grant & Jody Wisternoff curate a killer second CD for Anjunadeep 12. Both deserve full plays, and that's easy with both, as they're each released in seamless, mixed form as well. Now, as far as remixes are concerned, there are plenty to highlight. I love the 'Foals' remix of Everything Everything, especially as, with the Gentle Dom remix two weeks ago, it paves a unique path. BRONSON again score some sick remixes with Hayden James, obli and Patrick Topping delivering a diverse trio. Similarly stacked, the Aluna Renaissance (Remixes) boasts brilliance from the likes of UNIIQU3, TSHA and The Martinez Brothers. Capping the remix conversation, Olof Dreijer, Dimitri From Paris, and ASHE, work wonders with "Monument," "Finally Ready," and "Grey Skies," respectively. Finally, I'd be foolish not to further direct your attention to TroyBoi's warm, resplendent and ingenious EP, V!BEZ, Vol. 4. Have a great weekend and enjoy!

Plustwo - Melody (Gerry Read Remix)

The genius of Gerry Read takes us back to 1980s italo-disco with his energetic and groovy update of Plustwo's "Melody." Striking bright from the jump, this 8 Head release radiates warmth and blinding brilliance as you open your eyes and ears to its rousing first bars. Feeling the electricity of the original song's allure course through your veins, you've no choice but to bounce along like a cartoon character. However, it is Read's recasting that really gives "Melody" such a highly coloured and stylized allure. While the original is marvellous, it cannot compare to the heft and more widely arranged grooves the Suffolk sensation puts to work in his remix. Still, this closeness to the original is awesome. Read's captivating play with the already lively vocals are vital, as are the many layers of "Melody." It's just so catchy, as though covered in barbs, there's no way you can come into contact with it without some part of it sticking to you. In fact, it might as well be quicksand as the mucky grooves suck you right in. But enough gushing, enjoy Gerry Read's remix of "Melody" below or find it on iTunes/Spotify/Youtube.

Bump In The Hump: January 27 (Season 9, Episode 56)

Tracklist

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Dezza & EMME - Getaway (djimboh Remix)

After drilling down on DnB by devoting 40 minutes to it on last week's show, we go even further this week with more than an hour of house and techno to start. Kicking Bump In The Hump into gear, the djimboh remix of Dezza and EMME's "Getaway" takes the first steps in the audio adventure that is tonight's episode. Fitting its name, the essence of "Getaway" appears in its soaring spirit, cruising either through the water or above the clouds. Equally telling of the theme of tonight's episode, its easy, infectious and moving qualities make it the perfect opener for tonight's odyssey, in which we'll hear HNTR's track of the same name. Stream "Getaway" below, get it from your preferred source here, and catch it on Bump In The Hump, live from 7-9 PM EST on Radio Humber, or after the fact on Mixcloud.

Ase Manual - No Words

When an Ase Manual Bandcamp email arrives in my inbox, I have no idea what to expect. Of course, the New Jersey-based producer has his share of jersey club type hits, but he's so much more than that. His Bandcamp store has an incredible range on the music front, and even more, in the merch department (shower curtains/area rugs/cassette tapes/various clothes). Putting his prolific nature aside, Manual's genius has gripped me today with a tremendous take on Tracy Chapman's "For You."

Now you might not think the acoustic guitar of the "Fast Car" icon would be rife for remixing, but Ase Manual can flip just about anything. Allowing Chapman's guitar line to set the scene, Manual quickly puts his spin on "For You" by adding a bustling breakbeat. Maintaining the plain and simple power of the original with cool and calm, albeit upbeat, instrumentation, Manual gives the track a new heartbeat while keeping Chapman's soul. This is especially clear in his use of Chapman's iconic vocals as Manual chops them to perfection, leaning on their lush lilts and wicked warbles. And it is with those chops that "No Words" becomes brilliant. They work wonders with both the bounciness of the jersey section and the catchiness of the guitar melody. Despite bringing in his own pieces, Ase Manual successfully places each piece into the puzzle that is "For You," now renamed and reframed as "No Words." It's a new picture, the same subject, just a different angle. Get it free via Bandcamp and follow his socials below.

Above & Beyond - Sun In Your Eyes (Spencer Brown Remix)

This year marks the tenth anniversary of legendary trio Above & Beyond's landmark LP, Group Therapy. With recent remixes from Hybrid Minds and Oliver Heldens of "Love Is Not Enough" and "Thing Called Love," respectively, the celebrations continue today as Spencer Brown offers up an epic take on "Sun In Your Eyes."

Previously teasing us with a so-called "private mix," the Anjuna stalwart makes good with this sublime, official salvo. Making masterful use of the already august and majestic melodics of the original, Brown keeps the soul intact, while centring the remix on its incandescent core. The additional drums provide both a skeleton and direction for the track, while the new top-notes and mounting momentum launch it into a new stratum. Where the original is fabulous in its faint, glorious glow, Brown's rebuild is rapturous in its striking radiance, massive in its melodic multitudes and dramatic in its dynamic delivery.

A rich and resplendent epic if there ever were one, stream Spencer Brown's remix of "Sun In Your Eyes" below, get it from your preferred source here, and find the artists' socials at the bottom.FOLLOW ABOVE & BEYOND: FACEBOOK SOUNDCLOUD TWITTER

Enlightened Listening for January 22

After what I thought was an incredible haul with last week's Enlightened Listening, this week's harvest is more than three times the size! Of course, there are a few releases we've been building towards here with early singles from Bicep's Isles and Logic1000's You've Got The Whole Night To Go, but there's so much more than that! There are two Tim Reaper EPs, including his fabulous and incredibly hyped (deservingly so) Special Request remix EP. There are two other solo albums as bass legends DC Breaks and Flux Pavilion drop DCXV and .wav, respectively. In other shorter offerings, there are seven incredible EPs from the likes of Kessler, Low Poly, Apashe and Tiefschwarz. On the other side of the spectrum, Afterlife offers up an epic 25 track, nearly three-hour compilation in Unity Pt. 2. Showcasing high octane tech house, Cloverdale's rounded up a half-dozen tracks for his label Vibrancy's first compilation, Exhibits Vol. 1. Rounding things out, there's a handful of singles and remixes, including CamelPhat's take on London Grammar and Undercatt's take on Robert Mills' "Children". Stream the new music playlist below and find each individual release linked at the bottom. Have a great weekend!

Pecoe - Mama Said Latin You Out

Perth-based producer, Pecoe stopped my scrolling this morning as I stumbled upon his funky, Latin-inspired take on the title track from LL Cool J's 1990 album Mama Said Knock You Out. While he's dropped the 'knock' from the title, there's no denying "Mama Said Latin You Out" knocks with the best of them. Sporting a slick new bed led by some glorious guitar-work, Pecoe's pushed LL Cool J into new territory, tightening the screws on the already potent, pugilistic rap. This new funky force works incredibly well with the already sample-heavy original, especially as Pecoe keeps the drums (breaks and otherwise) rolling with a newfound resplendence. This new captivating colour and invigorating energy keeps the hype of the original alive and well and would certainly work wonders as a walk-up track. Get jacked to this rejuvenated groove with free download here, and follow Pecoe's socials below.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Leo Wood & Reflektor - Perfect Imperfection

After a limited amount of DnB in the first two episodes of the year, Bump In The Hump embraces the genre whole-heartedly tonight with more than 40 minutes of it in the middle of the episode. Near the end of said section sits this Leo Wood and Reflektor collaboration, "Perfect Imperfection." Not only is it a divine display of DnB's ability to couch captivating vocals atop an equally intoxicating bed, but it is also a deft description of tonight's episode. Outside the continuity of the DnB section, this eclectic episode has some sharp twists and turns as we weave our way through the latest and greatest in Canadian electronic and dance, at times at the cost of smooth transitions. But that's just the nature of the show, it is perfect in its imperfect presentation of the vast Canadian soundscape. Stream "Perfect Imperfection" below, and catch it on tonight's all-new episode of Bump In The Hump, live from 7-9 EST on Radio Humber, or after the fact as cataloged on Mixcloud here.

Kölsch Open-To-Close at REX, 2019

Yesterday, Kölsch shared his epic open-to-close set from the legendary REX nightclub in Paris. Spanning nearly seven hours, the 2019 mix allows the Danish DJ to showcase his musical multitudes through stacks upon stacks of tracks, released or otherwise.

Literally welcoming listeners with Château Flight's "Welcome" as the third track in, Kölsch keeps things quite cool for the first half-hour before Frank & Tony's "Bring The Sun" begins to warm things up. Shortly after crossing the hour mark, we're greeted by the familiar sound of Austra's Katie Stelmanis as part of the Patrice Bäumel remix of Claptone's "La Esperanza." Continuing to climb this mountain of music, the essence of Kölsch really starts to take shape in this second hour as we're treated to a masterful mix of all kinds of progressive house/melodic techno. In that section alone, there are massive, moving cuts from Carl Craig in "Futurelovetheme" and Bawrut in "Pronto Arpeggio."

Not long into the third hour, Kölsch begins to lay out his recently released album Now Here No Where, starting with its title track. While I'm hesitant to say this hour is the hardest hitting, as the fifth features Alex Gopher's "Aurora" and The Stooges' "I Wanna Be Your Dog," it is perhaps the most taught and driving techno section with all kinds of acid and tension. With a couple brighter and more uplifting all-time classics in Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" and Kölsch's own "Cassiopeia" coming in the fourth hour, the up and down nature of this audio odyssey becomes unmistakable. And while that fact ought to have been clear from the jump, it's important to remember that this was a live DJ set, so presumably, Kölsch was playing to the audience and not merely curating in a vacuum. That said, I think it's clear that the club was absolutely bumping by the four and a half-hour mark as the Dane dives into an incredible run of tracks ranging from his all-time classics "Opa" and Grey/KIR to Circuit Breaker's "Systematic" and the KiNK remix of "Acid Track."

Closing with the laidback likes of "Rose Rouge," his own jazzy offering "Remind You" and the grand finale, Galaxy 2 Galaxy's "Amazon," Kölsch's nearly seven-hour journey through sound is a wonderous ride that reminds us of both his captivating catalogue and of the majesty of an open-to-close set. Stream it below, find a partially complete tracklisting here, and follow Kölsch's socials at the bottom.

Mike Balance - Moon Rocks

Helping to shake off any Monday malaise, LA-based funky house producer Mike Balance's first release of the year, "Moon Rocks," is sure to get your blood pumping. Jacking right from the jump, this tech-driven, nu-disco joint pulls no punches with its acid onslaught. Melting the track into one wicked wall of sound, Balance gets gooey with his groove as the 303s torch the top-end. With a killer rolling drum fill leading into each of the deep and driving drops, "Moon Rocks" roars to life with all kinds of raucous floor-filling energy. While it is not a groundbreaking production, it is indeed infectious and sure to leave you bristling with ambition. Grab "Moon Rocks" free here and follow Mike Balance's socials below.

Enlightened Listening for January 15

If this week's edition of Enlightened Listening is any indication, 2021 is sure to be an incredible year for music. Here we have 20 new releases running 3 hr 33 min (repeating of course). But seriously, this playlist is overflowing with quality through its sensational singles and resplendent remixes. While I'm recommending each of these releases, there are a few special ones I need to note.

First, there's the magical compilation from All Day I Dream, then TSHA's tear continues with her remix of KUU. Another rockin' remix follows shortly thereafter as Marsh brings some mayhem to "Eternal Summer." And I guess remixes are the theme of the week as the trio of Metronomy, Autechre and Zach Witness take on Myd, SOPHIE and Armand Van Helden, respectively. Each incredible in their own right, these are three of the most unique and inspired remixes I've come across in months. Enjoy the weekly new music playlist below and find each individual release linked at the bottom. Cheers!

Anden - Breathe

The Brooklyn based Cuppernull brothers, Tom & Pete, aka Anden, just dropped a new EP on Yotto's Odd One Out imprint. While both tracks deliver powerful progression, it ought to come as no surprise that I vibe more with the b-side.

Thriving through the duo's dynamic drum delivery and booming bass throbs, "Breathe" bristles with an infectious energy that slowly but surely sweeps you off your feet. Even better in the extended mix, Anden's world-building here is simply stunning. Like chefs in a cosmic kitchen, Tom & Pete play with the ingredients ingeniously, adding a pinch of piano here and a dash of acid there, swirling it all together with their spellbinding synths. Baking in the breaks and flavouring it with effects, the resultant musical meal is hearty, healthy and full of essential nutrients.

Delicious from the first taste to the last drop, sink your teeth into the sonic sustenance that is "Breathe" below, get the Rewind EP here, and follow Anden's socials at the bottom.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: A-Trak, Chromeo & The Brothers Macklovitch

Among Canada's greatest musical exports, the Macklovitch brothers, Alain and David, may rank first. Their careers as A-Trak and (half of) Chromeo, respectively, have spanned decades and found success across the globe. Recently reuniting under The Brothers Macklovitch masthead, A-Trak & Dave 1 have delivered a handful of soulful DJ mixes as well as a pair of singles and remixes. While I usually try to limit each artist to a single track per episode of Bump In The Hump, this week's episode seemed to beg for the inclusion of all three. Find each of the tracks below and catch them in tonight's all-new episode of Bump In The Hump, live from 7-9 EST on Radio Humber, or after the fact as cataloged on Mixcloud.

TSHA ft. Trio Da Kali - Demba (Demi Riquísimo Remix)

Woman of the moment, TSHA just keeps turning heads. Recently named one of BBC Radio 1's Future Artists, the London-based producer just launched her debut Essential Mix there Friday, while scoring an inspired remix from Demi Riquísimo on Ninja Tune today. While I'll admit it took me to near the midway mark of her Essential Mix to really get it in the groove, it took no time at all for Riquísimo's resplendent remix to colour me captivated.

Making masterful use of TSHA's trademark percussion and Trio Da Kali's killer vocals, the Detroit-raised producer brings both a new groovy bassline and an extra acid odyssey. Now stretching over seven minutes and sporting a more club-focused feel, "Demba" delivers dance-worthy energy in droves, especially as the bristling bassline, gliding guitar, punchy percussion, and strident synths come together in the extended groove sections. Like an electronic jam band, this remix is more than progressive and playful enough for me to just sit back and listen in awe. The same can be said for the second half of her Essential Mix, especially the section starting with Prospa's "Voyage." And this is where I reveal that half of my decision to write about this "Demba" remix is an excuse to share her Essential Mix.

Less than a handful of the 31 tracks played in the mix have been released, making the two-hour trip all kinds of exclusive. I listened to it on my bike ride yesterday and cannot wait for the next opportunity to get lost in its incredible allure. There's just so much to like about TSHA's blending of more typical organic instrumentation and acid-etched, technologically-driven club type tracks. And this remix of "Demba" is a prime example of that, in one wicked and warm package. Stream Demi Riquísimo's remix below, get it from your favourite outlet here and check out her exceptional Essential Mix now, here.

Enlightened Listening for January 8

It's our first real Friday of the year, which means it's high time to get back on the Enlightened Listening bandwagon. While we're just getting our feet under us, we're going to keep things short and sweet, both musically and with this description.

Nine new releases span 15 tracks that move from progressive house through a bevy of banging Apashe remixes to a killer conclusion from oh! gee. While I'm recommending all nine releases, I want to further highlight the tough Kerri Chandler remix of one of 2020's best, "Heartbreak," and the stunning High Contrast remix of "Freedom," which, in a truly random coincidence, I woke up singing yesterday. Dig into the weekly new music playlist below and find each individual release linked at the bottom.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Cameron Morse - Anything

One of the best holiday traditions comes from LuckyMe, who share 12 previously unreleased or rare tracks via their Advent Calendar. This year's edition is as stacked as ever, playing host to the likes of Jacques Greene, Mssingno, A. G. Cook, S-Type, Lunice, Nathan Micay, Martyn Bootyspoon, Hudson Mohawke and others. While we'll be playing more than one of these tracks on Bump In The Hump, here we're focusing on the calendar's capstone, Cameron Morse's "Anything."

A track I first heard in Martyn Bootyspoon's July Crack Mix, "Anything," then labelled as "gen_1v_2," was an instant standout for me. It appears immediately after "Time To Time," another forthcoming Love Minus Zero (Tiga & Hudson Mohawke) production; the two tracks blend perfectly, making it one of my favourite sections of the year. Both sparse and beautiful, it's hard not to be affected by such a simple yet soulful serenade. Emanating from the fog of "Time To Time," "Anything" arises like an old AI program awakening from a decades-long slumber. It struggles to recapture its form and execute its program, coughing and sputtering in spectacular fashion. While alone, it might appear frail and faulty, in the context of this mix, and hopefully so in Bump In The Hump tonight, it works wonders to inspire movement and welcome the next wave.

Get "Anything" as part of LuckyMe's 2020 Advent Calendar here, catch it in the mix as Bump In The Hump returns to the Radio Humber airwaves live tonight from 7-9 EST, or after the fact on Mixcloud.
