Van Heden - Really Feelin' You

Sometimes Soundcloud blesses you by introducing you to an artist who blows you away. That happened to me today with Australian artist Van Heden, whose track "Really Feelin' You" describes my reaction to finding his blend of dance-ready tech and future house tracks. I'll get to the quality of that track in a moment, but I want to first point out that he's dropped some brilliant bootleg remixes of CeCe Peniston, Rihanna, Mary J. Blige and TLC, all in the matter of 5 months. Quite the debut.

"Really Feelin' You" is an excellent example of what I love about dance driven house tunes. It's got a great groove that guides the whole six minute mission, with warm, strong synth strides and progressive playful percussion with a sprinkling of saxophone. It feels like the dance-floor has been transported to a tropical paradise, in spite of the bonking bass delivery which reeks of regimented refinement. San Holo vs Kanye West - Lights (Nitti Gritti Remix)

There's remixes, DJ tools, edits and mashups, and then there's what Miami's Nitti Gritti has done here. "Lights" combines the epic brass arc of Kanye's "All Of The Lights" as covered by Alexander Lewis and Brasstracks, while managing to maintain the indie electronic sparkle of San Holo's "Light." To have the horns rise in revelry from out of the ethereal chorus of "I just wanna see the light" is one thing, but to have Rihanna join in is sheer magic. Even when the two tracks are most oppositional (1:17ish), their mixture actually seems strong. Especially towards the end of the track, Nitti Gritti's mixing mastery shines through. He's able to flip back and forth between the two ingredients, whipping together an entirely new and appealing original. Brighten up your day with "Lights," available free via Hive, here. Rihanna - Woo (Cadenza Edit)

The craft of remixing can be a difficult one. It's important to maintain at least some semblance of the original's integrity, while not regurgitating it entirely. An edit however, is something completely different. Generally it doesn't bring any new elements to the table, merely moving parts around, highlighting others, adding a little more oomph or upping the tempo. Usually it makes a more pop oriented track 'club ready'. While that may seem quite simple, it can be difficult to do well. My favourite example of an excellently done edit is Bit Funk's take on Talking Heads "Girlfriend Is Better." Other recent examples include Jacques Greene's re-rub of Frank Ocean's "White Ferrari" and Kaytranada's sublime Solange refix, "Cranes In The Sky." Others bring something else to the table like Grinless' combination of R. Kelly's "Flirt" and Mija & Vindata's "Better" the result of which is one of my favourite mashups of all time.
All that being said, Cadenza's edit of Rihanna's track "Woo" is another prime example of an excellent edit. Doing everything I detailed above, it is still quite clearly Rihanna's track, reorganized and reinvigorated by Cadenza. What makes it so good and delightfully distinct from the original is its additional propellant percussion, bigger, more dominant bass and almost smoky distortion of Rihanna's now trademark mumbling lyrics. There's a great allure to Cadenza's version of "Woo" taking it from a track I'd never play on purpose, to a track I'd throw on to impress my friends. You too can cop Cadenza's edit, entirely free, and show off your terrific taste in music.

Lucas remixes Wiz Khalifa, Beyonce, Rihanna, Future, Jeremih and more in Fliptape EP

Seattle based producer and Secret Songs alum, Lucas just dropped a six track remix package/EP in which he puts his own spin on many of the hottest tracks of the past few years, including Beyonce's "Formation," Rihanna's "Work" and Jeremih's "Don't Tell Em." Each track is available for free download individually on Soundcloud, or you can get all of them together as a compressed folder, here. These are by no means bangers or even really club tools, they're basically just bootleg versions that take the original track in a different direction. Lucas showcases his subdued and subtle style, not being flashy but still beefing up the original. A little jazz, a little air-horn, and a little after-hours affectation give the Fliptape and all of these tracks a new life and purpose. These are the kind of tracks you can break out to impress your friends, as you chill on the dock or reminisce about the night before. Add Fliptape to your library and enjoy the rest of the summer with these tracks in your shuffle.

Rihanna - Needed Me (Murlo Remix)

In honour of his remix of Rihanna's "Work" surpassing the million play milestone on soundcloud, British DJ and producer, Murlo just dropped another Rihanna rework, this time taking on "Needed Me." Fluttering and flighty, the tropical steel pans add a refreshing island vibe reminiscent of Rihanna's homeland. Subtle and sneaky, this remix washes over your ears like waves lapping on an island paradise. Murlo's treatment of her vocals is both delicate and incredibly alluring, making it easy to get lost in this potent production. The beauty of this version is the seemingly contradictory fact of its definite distinct nature, setting it apart from the original, yet somehow familiar feel, not bastardizing the beauty of the original. I fully expect Murlo's version of "Needed Me" to get the same amount of recognition his "Work" remix received.

Rihanna ft. Drake - Work (Hi Tom Remix)

Just over a month since fellow Rytmeklubben member, DJ Karaoke, dropped two remixes of Rihanna's mumbling masterpiece "Work," Hi Tom adds a second version of track, this time featuring some steel-pans. Find his first version here and Karaoke's versions here, for instant free download. More club friendly and summer ready, Hi Tom's new version, features tuned up vocals and the usual Hi Tom/Rytmeklubben influences and instrumentation. But of course the main feature and most appealing, at least in my book (as I wait for warm weather), is the tropical feel of the steel-pans. I can't be positive but it seems like a strange coincidence that I was directed to this video of Keishaun Julien performing "Work" on the steel-pans, last Monday. Whether Hi Tom sampled this video, was influenced by it or it's mere coincidence, the resulting new version is yet another in a slew of great remixes of "Work" from both the Rytmeklubben crew and the world of producers at large. Flaxo Retiring Thanks To Soundcloud?

We have yet another case of Soundcloud's copyright policies striking artists down; it might be a final strike for San Francisco's, Flaxo. Via a facebook post, not more than an hour ago, he expects his account to be terminated within the next day or two. Appreciating the growth as a person and artist, the Flaxo monitor supported, he's decided to move onto another a new alias he's "tremendously excited about." Much like fellow Soundcloud snub Lido, Flaxo's music will live on courtesy a massive, complete discography zip, available for free download. It's sad that Soundcloud helped bring down Flaxo, however I'm confident and excited to hear what he comes up with next. He certainly did a great job blessing us with such a range of productions: the powerful "Cosmic Love" remix, sparkling "Diamonds" remix, striking "Weight In Gold" remix, and, perhaps my favourite, the angelic "Touch" remix. Having remixed such massive artists, Kendrick Lamar, Jamie xx & Jack U, along with the others, his tracks were clearly a threat to Soundcloud's radar, but the 25+ thousand followers also came for his original releases. Get on that free zip and get yourself some final Flaxo.
