Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Chromeo - Fancy Footwork (Mr. Carmack Remix)

There's no questioning Chromeo's place on the Mount Rushmore of Canadian electronic music. The same can be said for Mr. Carmack, who continues to prove his place among the best beat and bootleg makers in the game. So when I found out the High Priest of Honolulu had put his touch on the classic Chromeo cut "Fancy Footwork," I knew we were in for a treat. The 'two-step' song already oozes with wicked vibes through synths and percussion play, and Carmack's only upped that. It's almost like an atmospheric breakbeat track that flourishes through fantastic and understated grooves. There's no questioning the dance quality of either this or original, in which Chromeo was perhaps the first to de-contextualize the word "twerk" (see their annotation via Genius). Falcons - Diplo And Friends Mix

Let's cut right to the chase, I fuck with Falcons heavy. His style is strong, yet diverse, and his latest mix for EM Award winning radio show Diplo and Friends is the perfect example of the breadth of his beats and mixing mastery. There's tons of trap, big bass bangers, and some touchy feely groove grinders. And, being a man of so many talents and by no means a newcomer, he's got his hands on a multitude of mashups and onslaught of edits from his friends. Mr. Carmack makes multiple appearances, as well as Juelz and Graves, plus he's pushed the tempo with well over 30 tracks in the hour long mix.

Highlights for me include the always alluring Jesse Slayter mix of Hoodboi and Lido's "Palm Reader" which is magically mixed into Falcons' own "Want Your Body" before bodying us with Jarreau Vandal's "Redbone" flip. The fire hits "Fulltime" courtesy Juelz, ahead of "Aerosol Can" as refixed by Carmack, before becoming Falcons' "All Over Again" (presumably a forthcoming track). The Tony Quattro/Tropkillaz combination is quite the treat too. And then there's the always enjoyable Lazerpiff "Lose My Breath," paired with Carmack's King Kendrick "DNA" flip which then leads into TWO, Graves IDs. 12 Best Releases of February 14, 2017

Each day I scan through my soundcloud feed looking for a specific kind of track. One that I like, one that has a generally low number of plays, and preferably one that hasn't been covered by other blogs yet. Today however I seemed to find more than normal, actually an even dozen. So instead of writing a longer piece about one track, I've opted to showcase all of them with a brief sentence or two, detailing why I like them so much. Check them out below and grab the free downloads where applicable.
Hero - Dirty Work
Calgary's Hero has been on a role lately, producing a number of breathtaking tracks, including his VHS Pop EP. This one excels with a Daft Punk vibe alongside some truly touching lyrics and a godly groove.

Realmind - Malta (Billboard Remix) [FREE DOWNLOAD]
This is some Montreal on Montreal mixing here. It's got a ton of guts and some wild future bass mentality. The sound design of each element is extraordinary, and the progression is perfect.

Malaa - Bylina (Lick Remix) [FREE DOWNLOAD]
The latest Malaa production is already making waves around the world, and while I appreciate its vocals and much of the design, Lick's remix speaks to me even more. I prefer a fuller drop than what the original offers and this one has just that, there's no boring bits or points in which I desire more.

Kream - Love You More (Nate Lowpass Remix) [FREE DOWNLOAD]
As he notes in the track description, the vocals have an immediate allure, and Nate Lowpass's mix suits them brilliantly. The bass plays perfectly and drives along with the tuned drum fills.

SL.Y - F.U.N. ft Hesk
Toronto's Bedroomer collective have themselves a new club focused compilation called Mainroomer. Along with tracks from Kare and a collab between Internet Daughter and Eytan Tobin, this one shows sensational synth work and awesome vocal chops. Its furious pace is as exciting as it is enjoyable.

LigOne - Choose The Flow
This one sparkles right off the bat, and only gets brighter and bouncier as it goes along. It shows off LigOne's incredible ability to bring together so many elements and have them work in sync superbly.

Anna Lunoe - Radioactive (Masayoshi Iimori Remix) [FREE DOWNLOAD]
After dropping off six official remixes Friday, Anna's added another five including this from Masayoshi, as well as G-Buck and Vices. This mix once again proves that there's no one that can truly match Masayoshi's production style. His almost schizophrenic treatment makes this a psycho club killer.

Tennyson x Mr. Carmack - Tuesday
Easily the most laid-back track in this list, the seemingly opposing styles of this collab actually work wonderfully. It's got the jazzy feel of Tennyson guiding the movement, while Carmack's club qualities shine through. Stay tuned for Wednesday and Thursday forthcoming via Red Bull Sound Select.

Shawn Wasabi - Spicy Boyfriend
The cuteness of Shawn Wasabi's productions cannot be overstated, nor can the quality of his sound design in this track. Its youthful play makes me overflow with an unbridled feeling of freedom. I highly recommend checking out the video of him performing it live from his bed, here.

The Kount - You Glow
This is some kind of Kaytranada, Anderson .Paak stuff, and boy am I glad to have found it. The groove and feels it exudes are extraordinary. It meshes live performance and electronic production seamlessly.

Coolights & Element - Show U (ft. NKOLO) [FREE DOWNLOAD]
How a track can simultaneously be so banging yet so beautiful and full of feels I'll never know. It reminds me of two of my favourite tracks at the moment, Rytmeklubben's "Like That" and Indiginis' "Get Ur Frk On." I fully expect this to be one of my go to early morning tracks that gives me life.

Terror Jr - Come First (Kid Froopy Remix)
Can you sense a theme here? This too is what I like to refer to as a beautiful banger. It's emotional with its combination of chords and vocals, but what Kid Froopy has done with the drop is sure to have your heart skip a beat. I'm truly speechless. I don't want to do anything but listen to this again and again.

Moldavite - Majesty

Cool Californian producer Moldavite, previously known as Passage, fresh off the release of his 14 track album, The Realest on August 3rd, just dropped another new chill trap production, "Majesty." The sub-genre known as chill trap is a bit of an odd one, almost an oxymoron, as true trap is anything but chill. That being said, chill trap seems to have taken off in the past few years after artists like Cashmere Cat, Daktyl and Mr. Carmack among others, set the bar. Moldavite really seems to have figured out the key to crafting a quality chill trap track as he's got a number of them under his belt, including the marvelously cool "Majesty." It's ambiance fills the room immediately lifting spirits, while the radiant wind-chimes stand atop the massive booming bass.

The key for me however, is the tuning of the percussion, specifically wooden blocks (at 1:08 and again at 2:29). The combination of the percussion, oh so beautiful synths and silvery vocals, and their progression throughout, make "Majesty" a track not just for playing once, but one that can and should be enjoyed countless times. Its serene, composed qualities have an amazing and inescapable allure, one that I imagine will have you grateful for this free download from Moldavite.

Lindsay Lowend - Scrimshaw

Washington DC's Antonio Mendez, known to most as Lindsay Lowend, has put his musical talent and songwriting skill on full display with yesterday's free release of "Scrimshaw."

 While the vast majority of Lowend productions are exceedingly light and beautiful soundscapes, "Scrimshaw" may be the pinnacle of that vein of production. Upon first listen, you may easily discount the track entirely, as it has no distinct drop or specific points of interest, but that is exactly what makes the track such a triumph. It flows so effervescently, soaring with it's bright and brilliant plucked strings accompanied by beautiful bells and slyly swirling synths. However it's the cleverly placed clicks that really propel "Scrimshaw" from mere elevator music to something more deserving of a thoughtful second listen.

While very much so a jazz inspired production, at times it becomes inexplicably electronic, with its reversing course, spinback effects (1:15ish). However, Lowend reorganizes the sounds, regaining its original stride and purpose, easing us back into his flirtatious fluttering. The crowning moment comes around 2:45 with the resolving chord progression, that for some reason, reminds me of the 8-bit soundtrack of RBI Baseball (listen here). Funnily enough, this isn't the first time Lindsay Lowend and baseball have gone together, as a matter of fact the first time I came across LL was through his collaborations with Jonah Baseball.

If you've enjoyed "Scrimshaw," I'm confident that you'll also appreciate their collaborative remixes of Bobby Tank and GoldLink "Semiprecious" and "Ay Ay," respectively. My favourite JB/LL collab however is an original, "Brian Williams." Of course Lindsay Lowend has more of his own productions, worthy of checking out as well, originals: "Tower," "Glen Eden Station," "Zoning Ordinance: Venus," and remixes; Rhythm District "Unspoken," Mr. Carmack "Roller" and Beyonce "Irreplaceable."
