SCRIPT & onumi - Kibō

The artist collective that is six impala (KaTT, underscores, SCRIPT, shivan, TSUKII and OMNI) have been steadily blowing up since their first label release: the 13 minute epic Death Grips medley. Their tracks are about as unique as they come, conjuring up the strangest of soundscapes, rife with unimaginable grit, killer bass, and all kinds of technological terror. I've long lamented the title future bass (and I'm not saying that six impala use it), but in my ears this is what future bass actually should be ascribed to. Even with my subwoofer turned down the abundance of bass in their tracks is undeniable, as is their gift for gritty, boundary pushing productions, which brings me to the latest release on the label. The outside influence of onumi is combined with co-founder SCRIPT to create "Kibō," a track unlike anything you've ever heard.

It starts off sweet and smooth, before being flipped into a rapid-fire flamethrower. Yet it's never just one or the other. The combination of these two opposing energy centers underscores the ingenious nature of the track. While at first warping wickedly, the ease and beauty established early on slowly sneaks back in before taking over with a blissful piano breather. Of course the final flourish finds the fire again, if only briefly before the explosion of effects ushers in the track's destruction.

I must be nearing a dozen plays as I write this, and yet it's still so stunning. The interplay of effects, the potent progression, and delirium inducing sound design - all work to perfection. Whether you hear "Kibō" on a big system or little earbuds, there's no questioning its impact.
