TYPE3 & Sebastian Knight - Boombox

For years Botnek have been among my favourite artists, frolicking in their fiery electro/bass/house bangers. It was always their most wild, unrestrained releases that brought me the most pleasure and sent me into tizzies on the dance floor. In fact I believe my most manic times in the club came when they were on the decks. So to say I was excited when they announced their own label, World Famous Headquarters, would be a grave understatement. Still in its infancy, it is this seventh release, "Boombox" from Vegas residents TYPE3 and Sebastian Knight, that has me sold on its electrifying output.

Labelled fidget house, a subgenre a friend and I were just lamenting as seemingly fallen to the wayside, "Boombox" is a certified banger; a track you can most certainly lose your mind to. Absolutely jacking and seemingly ready to explode at any moment, it speeds through with rapid fire wobs and maniacal samples. It bombards your senses but in the best way possible; it is no thrown together collection of sounds but rather a potent progression of pleasure. Like classic Crookers, Jack Beats or even Botnek, this one is sure to set fire to the floor and has already received support from the likes of LondonBridge, Pasquale Rotella and Martin Garrix. Bag Raiders - Shooting Stars (Onderkoffer Remix)

That track you know from the meme of the moment, Bag Raiders "Shooting Stars" just got a trap remix from Dutch producer Onderkoffer. In fact this remix was made explicitly as result of the memes, as Onderkoffer wrote in the track description "Saw the memes, had to make a remix." He's also made it available for free download, encouraging us to use it in our own memes. Cop it here. I've known Onderkoffer through his remixes for years now, starting with his orchestral remix of Martin Garrix "Animals," and running through the likes of Jason Derulo "Wiggle," Fetty Wap "Trap Queen" and Daft Punk "Get Lucky." The man certainly has a penchant for remixing viral pop tracks, maintaining just enough of the original to keep people hooked, while tweaking it to his liking. This and his other remixes, succeed because he's obviously got a strong musical background and understanding of what works and what doesn't. While you may already be tired of the original, he's able to inject a little extra life into the overexposed production.

Throwback Thursday: Congorock - Ivory

It feels good to get back to basics, and continue my journey of musical growth, through my Throwback Thursday series. This week it gives me great pleasure to revisit one of my favourite tracks from one of the most inventive and influential producers I've ever heard, Congorock and his 'elephant bass' track "Ivory." It undoubtedly spurred a slew of tracks from the likes of Dimitri Vegas/Like Mike, Clockwork, Hard Rock Sofa, Showtek, Felix Cartal, Nom De Strip and Charlie Darker, among countless others. I'd go so far as to say Congorock's influence, for better or worse, is part of the reason we have such acts as Martin Garrix, DVBBS, and fellow Italians VINAI. There's no questioning Congorock's groundbreaking production skills, first entering into mainstream consciousness with the unavoidably awesome, "Babylon," but it is my assertion, "Ivory" was the track that truly cemented his status as a producer's producer. Whether it's the wobbly, throbbing pulses of the bass synth, the perfectly tuned percussion, so finely placed in the incredibly deep atmosphere, or the obviously awesome pitch bent, elephant trumpeting; Congorock absolutely nails the hands in the air, ecstasy inspiring, inescapable big room sound.

The atmosphere of "Ivory" whisks you away to an African safari, with ominous tension abounding as you wait to see your first glimpse of wildlife. Suddenly, as though from a scene straight out of The Jungle Book, a herd of elephants trample through the nearby bushes and are right on top of you. Overwhelming in magnitude and unyielding in size, there is no escaping the mammoth power of Congorock's "Ivory."

While I find myself listening to less and less of this particular brand of big room electro, there's no questioning the impact it had on me and the love I still have for Congorock. Despite not hearing much from him lately (his most recent release came last April), his library of tracks, will no doubt stand the test of time. Be sure to enjoy the awesomeness of his original productions "Sirius," "Monolith," "Bless Di Nation," with Stereo Massive, "Minerals," with Nom De Strip and "Infinite Mana" with Clockwork. And don't forget his raucous remixes, Zedd's "Spectrum," Swedish House Mafia's "One," Clockwork's "Titan," and Zeds Dead's "Cowboy." Here's to hoping we get some new Congorock in there near future.

WTF Friday: An Hour Down The Soundcloud Wormhole

It probably doesn't come as much of a surprise that I troll soundcloud on the regular. And much like Alice In Wonderland is relatively easy to fall through some sort of wormhole to that transports you to an alien world. This just happened to me as I was looking at goofy mashups, particularly those combining rap and kawaii, and came across this incomprehensibly insane account, dicksoak.


This was the second track I came across, probably should have stopped at the first one but it was so incredibly ridiculous that I just had to give this guy another chance to see if there was any hidden gold. I was immediately greeted with this tuned up Eminem monstrosity, the vocal stabs are hilariously tuned and hits an absolutely awesome peak with the chipmunk tuned background vocals at 33 seconds in. The 8-bit video game score brings the intensity and makes it feel as though you're being chased my some hyperactive Marshall Mathers.
