The Bee Gees & Sérgio Mendes - Stayin' Alive (Ahmed Sirour's Rio Remix)

I can't quite remember when Ahmed Sirour first appeared on my radar, but it seems like every week for the last few months he's been showing up in my inbox with thoughtful messages about his newest releases, several of which I've supported here. Late last night the Brooklyn-based producer unleashed his latest creation (or Frankenstein's monster if you will) a percussion driven mix of The Bee Gees and Sérgio Mendes. In his rather lengthy description of this multi-faceted affair, Sirour (like the Bee Gees themselves) rejects the disco classification of "Stayin' Alive" by replacing its glitzy guitars with the indomitable drums of a live recording of Sérgio Mendes' "Magalenha." The resultant mix runs more true to the lyrical nature of "Stayin' Alive" and the desperate struggle the Gibbs brothers almost literally wail about. And, for my ear at least, this new dogged drum delivery works wonders in showcasing the unassailable human spirit that lives at the core of "Stayin' Alive."
