Squired & Minit - Awake

A cross continent collab from New York's Squired and Korea's Minit, just arose on soundcloud less than an hour ago. "Awake" is an awesome future bass track that hits on all cylinders. Despite using tried and true styles and sounds, it's not generic in any way. Rather it uses the foundation of future bass to paint a beautiful picture and engrossing story - best encapsulated in its name, "Awake."

The percussion and uplifting vocal strides propel listeners into an upright position. "Awake" then wavers and wobbles, wiping the grogginess from your vision and the crust from your eyes. It's a fight we all undertake everyday; getting up and out of bed is not an easy task, either physically or mentally. The struggle doesn't get easier until you get a little bit of extra help and inspiration, in this case the jolt of energy of your morning coffee is illustrated as the soaring synth solo starting at 2:59. It's as potent as double shot of espresso right into the bloodstream, perfect for your morning. "Awake" will have you empowered and ready to conquer the day, inspired by Squired and Minit's heart-palpitating beauty. Wake up your senses with "Awake" for free via ToneDen here.

Yvng Jalepeño - Awake (w/ TYNVN)

Every once in a while everything seems to come together perfectly. That's exactly what happened this morning when I opened up soundcloud for the first time. There at the top of my stream was this track, "Awake" from two artists I'd never heard of, Yvng Jalepeño and TYNVN. For some reason I had a feeling this track, tagged "future" and reposted by Holly, was going to something. Just what that something is, I'm still not entirely sure. It certainly is future, or at least what we call future in 2016, but what genre is it? (Note: I don't really care what genre it is, its bloody good regardless) Probably the most likely category would be future bass, but there's elements of trap, dubstep and drum and bass. "Awake" has my head spinning, right from the rainstick aided opening. I just can't get my head around the amount of work Yvng Jalepeño and TYNVN put into the track, each second is so full of flavour, intensity and emotion. So much is packed into this 3:32, from the humid jungle feeling of the intro, to the almost tribal percussion, that in turn leads into the piano led, anthemic sing-a-long. Once the two set us up with the heart-pounding riser, they proceed to flip the track on its head with a brilliant and ballsy drop, that feels both familiar yet brand new. The toms are tuned to perfection, peaking our interest, while sending us spiraling through the unearthly and unholy drop. It flies off the handle, urging listeners to absolutely lose their shit. Dance however you like; "Awake" sparks a fire in the feet that only moving will put out. The use of Annie Lennox's "Little Bird" is genius, it gives "Awake" a kind of RnB/Motown vibe through her warbling woo's. Further, her vocals seem to lend perfectly to the pitch play of Yvng Jalepeño and TYNVN. Re-purposing Lennox's liberating lyrics, "Awake" is the kind of track that inspires awesome waves of emotion. It is full of fun, wickedly wild and 100% free, get it via dropbox here.

Hunt For The Breeze ft. Josh Jacobson - Awake (LOKI Remix)

Columbus based producer, LOKI continues his furious streak of remixes, this time taking on Hunt For The Breeze and Josh Jacobson's track "Awake." This follows up collaborative remixes with Wildfire and DAZIE, flipping the likes of Lido and Galantis, respectively. His feel for future bass has been on full display since I first found him (and Far & Few) via their remix of Alison Wonderland's "Already Gone" (my post about it from January). Where that track had twisted trap influences, this latest lends itself more readily to future bass vibes, with bright bells, flutes and delicious drum flourishes. It's easy listening while not being downtempo or mindless. LOKI takes the already alluring structure, Hunt For The Breeze laid down, and converts it into a cool, climbing and courageous coup. Its light, airy feeling invokes a Super Mario bonus level in which our hero zooms past angelic creatures, collecting coins and power-ups, confidently forging towards an unsuspecting, yet ever looming boss. LOKI has empowered his listeners with the ability to collect his remix for free, via The Artist Union.

WRLD - Awake

Dutch producer WRLD just delivered an incredible artistic arc, upping his game, with the three track EP, Awake, released today, on Vancouver's Monstercat label. The spectacularly sparkling nu-disco/future bass feels of the title track are contrasted with the deeper, downtrodden and blues inspired, "Drowning," which in turn leads to the triumphant, reinvigorated, comeback of the final track "Discovery." Do not sleep on this incredibly cohesive and fantastically cinematic narrative. Let WRLD Awake your senses, by picking up the EP from iTunes, Bandcamp, Google Play, or streaming it on Spotify.
Unavoidably awesome playful, pitch-bent, synth riffs attack right out of the gates, firing you out of bed as though shot from a cannon. Colordrive's vocals preach the power of a double shot of espresso to the arm, inspiring even the most sleepy night owl to start the day with a bounce in their step.

The second track "Drowning," lies in stark contrast to the invigoration of "Awake." Emoting the depression of not being able to get out of bed, after a long night out. It is the overwhelming feeling of debilitating fear and petrification of never being able to achieve the same highs (of "Awake"). Ehiorobo's perfectly portray this suffocating feeling, amidst muted chords and a deluge of despondent synths.

WRLD and his masterful finale, cast this malaise aside, ushering in a new feeling of hope and optimism. The warm synths and bright inspiring piano of "Discovery," inject listeners with energy and enthusiasm for the future. Celebratory flourishes and exalted chords imbue superpowers and the feeling that anything is possible. Lifting spirits as though straight out of an 80s movie montage, it is the triumphant culmination and capstone of the simply incredible and emotive roller coaster ride that is WRLD's Awake.
