Enlightened Listening for August 27

I've had a terrible time keeping track of the days this week, missing my usual Bump In The Hump rollout entirely, but I've managed to pull myself together today for another shot of new music in Enlightened Listening. Leading the way into this week's playlist is pure bliss from Caribou. He's followed by a trend towards epics with grand designs from Helsloot and AVIRA, each of whom author awesome rides. Again epic, but undeniably in a league of its own, "Rainy April" finally gets its release nearly three years after its first play at ABGT300.

Turning towards the piano, TSHA's new single "I Know" completes her extremely cool & captivating OnlyL EP. Again all over the piano, as Paul Woolford always is, "Be A Rebel" gets an extended second take with New Order rejigging Woolford's remix. The second in a run of four remixes in a row, the playlist continues with Marshall Jefferson's masterful remix of the already exquisite "Music Saved My Life."

Headfirst into flames, the gyrofield remix of Hudson Lee's "Reanimate" sets off a run of energizing and oft-fierce DnB. While striking wildly different chords, the next two tracks, Flume's remix of "On A Mountain" and Heymac's "Katina," each tug at the heartstrings. Where "On A Mountain" scorches with sparking synths, "Katina" cools with pristine piano. Finally, the playlist closes with two uncapitalized Canadian talents, flowanastasia and thook. The former is fabulous on "River Flows," the second single from her forthcoming debut LP; the latter sends us off into DAWN, a tremendous seven-track immersion in all kinds of off-kilter, organic goodness, which once again reaffirms thook's status as a sonic artisan.

Enlightened Listening for August 13

Another week, another incredible edition of Enlightened Listening. Coming in at just under 40 tracks and 3 hours, there are all kinds of goodies in store here. First up, Brock Edwards dazzles with an awesome saxophone-led dub of his own "Up At Dawn." A second dub follows as MK makes good on his "Chemical" with a classic IV dub. Upbeat energy follows with a trio of DnB tracks, highlighted by a divine instrumental from Platinum Breaks.

Moving to longer-form releases, the next two come from Juelz and Feed Me, both bringing the bass with their own established brands of fire. Resetting things with a run of singles, the playlist pushes on with an invigorating take on Alan Parsons Project classic "Sirius," courtesy Armin van Buuren and AVIRA. Staying nostalgic, 1990-classic "The Age Of Love" gets a fearsome facelift from Charlotte de Witte and Enrico Sangiuliano. Finally, our run of fire ends with a bang thanks to the ingenious guttural growls of Kage in "The Zone."

Part punningly, part sonically fitting, the next three releases follow from "The Zone," as "Perpetual Motion" eventually leads to "The Hangover." The Fort Romeau mix of "Perpetual Motion" is equally epic and elegant, the following Neighbour remix of "Going Late" is groovy and gorgeous, and finally, Bush League's "The Hangover" is unavoidably infectious and undeniably head-pounding. Lastly, the playlist closes with lush, sensual stuff from Moullinex, Anderholm, and CRi, each of which features sublime, soulful synths.

Enlightened Listening for August 6

It's that time again, time for another edition of our weekly new-music playlist, Enlightened Listening. The theme of this week would appear to be triumphant returns/blasts from the past. The first of those three thematic leaders is Fake Blood, who delivers 10 new tracks in the latest release centred around Ian Urbina's The Outlaw Ocean. Immediately after that in the playlist is TWRK classic "BaDinga," as refreshed and reloaded by DJ Sliink. Finally, Point Point make a triumphant return with their first new release in over 3 years. Staying with the retro trend, that's what The Weeknd delivers in his new single "Take My Breath," a spiritual successor to "Blinding Lights."

Of course, that Weeknd track is a standout, but there's plenty of others worth paying attention to. Both of the LPs from Monkey Safari and Lakou Mizik/Joseph Ray are incredible rides, just as the singles from Ben Böhmer, Franc Moody and Louis La Roche are utterly intoxicating. Finally, I just have to give it up to tails for an impressive EP on bitbird, as photos of the sun is brilliantly inspired. Enlightened Listening for July 30

It's the Friday of a long weekend, so without further ado, I present this week's Enlightened Listening. Sorted from light, light-hearted and groovy to heavy, deep and banging, the 16 releases feature countless trusted names, several pre-album singles, and yes, a trio of awesome Anjuna offerings. Finally, I will note that, while not in the playlist, the two tracks I wrote about earlier this week, "Don't Tread On Else Matters" and "Only One," are just as highly recommended as the rest of these fine productions. Enlightened Listening for July 23

We've got another massive haul of new music in this week's Enlightened Listening. Leading the way is a monumental ten-artist collaboration led by Mix Master Mike. It's followed by two tremendous multi-track releases from Daktyl and Murlo, both of which are undeniable highlights of this playlist. Turning our attention back to singles, the next five releases move from the always impeccable vibes of Keys N Krates, through ISOxo's electrifying Sable Valley offering "Aarena," and into fabulously fat and fierce ELLM remix of "One Life." Quality Canadian content follows with Bensley, Sultan + Shepard and CRi, who you'll be sure to hear more of on Bump In The Hump. Restraint and beauty take center stage with the next three releases, each of which shines sublime. Taking a different turn, deadmau5 and Lights' "When The Summer Dies" gets a groovy, alternative mix. Powering into the final five releases, Theo Kottis kicks things off with a delightful double dose of sonic sunshine ahead of a ridiculously resplendent dub mix of "Cruel Summer." Turning darker, Claude VonStroke and Walker & Royce combine for a pair of brilliant Dirtybird drops. Finally, Sébastien Léger's epic and immersive remix of "Alien" leads us into the fifth edition of Afterlife's unparalleled Realm Of Consciousness compilation series. Enlightened Listening for July 16

It's Friday and that means it's time for this week's Enlightened Listening. I've got a busy day, so I've got to keep the writeup tight here, but that doesn't mean there isn't a mountain of new music for you to check out. In fact, our 20-release, 54-track playlist runs over three hours and includes a little of everything, so you're sure to find something you like. There are a couple less typical-of-this-playlist, yet cool cuts from BADBADNOTGOOD and Pat Metheny to start, epic stuff from VER:WEST, Booka Shade, Tonja Holma and The Chemical Brothers immediately after that and then it's banger hour with standouts from Dog N Hoss, Dr. Fresch x Glass Petals, Rusko and ShockOne. After that, we get Overmono's massive fabric compilation/mix alongside an incredible KUĈKA cover. Finally, we close with breathtaking tracks from Logic1000, gardenstate, OCULA and Tagavaka. Enlightened Listening for July 9

After skipping last week, Enlightened Listening is back with more than four hours of new music that you need to hear. Closing the book on last week, I'll note that Daktyl's "Hyperion" is from then, but I prefer it to the new single from his forthcoming mixtape. It, like so much of this week's playlist, features an incredible energy, a wicked vibe, and dope drums.

The other theme appears to be long-form releases (LPs or mixtapes) with Hybrid, Wizard, DJ Ride, and Attacca Quartet, each crafting a unique, cool, and compelling journey. Rounding out that first half, I've gotta give a tip of the hat to Ninajirachi's NLV/Sable Valley release, which is an absolute gas.

Still, the dope drums persist into the second half of the playlist as things get a touch more spacey with an awesome yehno remix package, another unreal Skream ifeel EP, and an Amtrac solo effort on OPENERS. Turning more dancey, and ever more groovy, the playlist continues with intoxicating originals from KUU and Peggy Gou, and a trio of top-notch remixes from Tensnake, Gerd Janson, and ABSOLUTE. Enlightened Listening for June 26

I know I'm more than a day late, and while I'm planning to take a few days off from blogging, I've just got to share this week's incredible new releases. Headlining this week's Enlightened Listening is a trio of albums, including Gaspard Augé's genius and epic debut, Escapades, Chromeo's killer live compilation, Date Night, and Unglued's gorgeous galactic liquid jam, Interplanetary Radio. Further standout releases come smack dab in the middle as Canadian outfits Vibrancy and Westwood Recordings bring together a ton of talents in the third edition of the Exhibits compilation series and the I Get Down With Aliens remix package, respectively. Finally, there are three more singular tracks I just have to showcase; they are Fluida's splendiferous "Refuge," voljum's insanely awesome "anemoi," and Robert Smith's remix of his song with CHVRCHES "How Not To Drown." Enlightened Listening for June 18

It's the weekend and that means it's time for another edition of Enlightened Listening. Headlining this week's new music playlist, and accounting for more than half of its tracks, is the simply massive Defected Presents House Masters compilation made up of a ton of Todd Edwards' legendary catalogue. He's not not the only time-tested and trusted talent here however, as Chromeo, Booka Shade and Blawan each deliver incredible new records. Young guns like TSHA, Simon Doty, Broken Future and STUND don't disappoint either. That said, I feel like I'd be doing a disservice if I didn't give Skream and DJ Deeon's releases specific shine, as they are both brilliant and mind-blowing, each and every track, particularly in regards to the percussion. Enlightened Listening for June 11

We keep creeping closer to summer, and this week's releases would seem to reflect those rising temperatures and longer days. This week's Enlightened Listening opens with an absolutely gorgeous album from Folamour that seems to have no weak spots whatsoever. An incredible accomplishment. Two awesome singles follow that as we continue with funky feels and organic grooves. A second highlight follows those singles as Jessie Ware caps her Platinum Edition of What's Your Pleasure? with two more incredible offerings. Next up is perhaps the most gorgeous jewel of them all, a breathtaking Brothers Macklovitch take on my favourite track from Tchami's Year Zero. Turning the tempo up a couple notches, two duo-made percussion-driven EPs follow with wicked tracks on each Oh and The Limit. My favourite of the three TroyBoi tracks to drop today then leads us into a couple cool, house singles before Hidden Face's brilliant Need U EP on This Never Happened. Finally, we throw caution to the wind as we end with the epic power of ARTBAT's remix of Röyksopp. Dig in now below. Enjoy!

Enlightened Listening for June 4

After a week off, we return to our new music playlist in a big way. This week's edition of Enlightened Listening features fifteen releases, largely in the funky sphere, but gets further driving and dark the deeper it goes. If there is one theme, it is the guitar (bass and otherwise). The oft underused instrument plays a varied role in several of this week's standout tracks, including particularly enjoyable iterations from ARTY, Myd and Lamorn. The latter mau5trap release, along with singles from Gaspard Augé and Rampa, and minds&machines' "Resurrected" make up my favourite four tracks of the week. The final third of the playlist, which holds all of the longer releases, features the second sensational EP from Hyunji-A in as many weeks, the deadly good debut EP from Afterlife & Tale Of Us founder Anyma, and another epic delivery from Drumstone, who continue to amaze at every turn. Finally, there's a massive compilation in Interzone that features killer new content from Cardopusher, Gesaffelstein, Djedjotronic and more! Enlightened Listening for May 21

It's Friday, the weather is nice, and apparently, it's a long weekend, so I'm going to keep this edition of Enlightened Listening short and sweet. The first two releases aside, this week's playlist is packed with power and energy, headlined by a bunch of DnB, breaks and other uptempo tracks. There's more than a handful of Canadian stuff that I'll be sure to showcase further in the coming days, but of course, what I'm most excited about is the new Boy 8-Bit EP. While it's wildly different from the stuff he was making when I first fell in love with his sound, my tastes seem to have grown alongside his evolution as these three are each awesome productions (of which "Give It To Them" is my initial favourite). Enlightened Listening for May 14

After perhaps the final Bandcamp Friday, we're back to Spotify with this week's Enlightened Listening. While the vast majority of the names in this week's list appear here often, there is but one rarity in Skrillex, who actually released two tracks this week, of which "Butterflies" with Starrah and Four Tet is my preferred release. And I guess since we're down near the bottom of the playlist, why not finish those final four releases right now. Ahead of "Butterflies" are a couple of dope, deep and groovy remixes from Majestic and Tiga. The final release in the list comes from Overmono, who tease their forthcoming venture with fabric, the titular "If U Ever." The fabric mix is set to drop July 16th.

Staying with mixes, we move to the first group of four releases as Jayda G's 21 track DJ-Kicks compilation was unveiled today. Joining it in the upper third is Gaspard Augé's excellent second single, Myd's jovial remix of Hot Chip, and two new takes on MD X-Spress from trusted talents Eats Everything and The Vision. Finally, the middle third of the playlist features three of my favourite long-running, organic/progressive/house artists in ASHE, ATTLAS and Qrion. Somehow each of these three tracks manages to be more serene and inspiriting than the next. Standing on its own in this middle foursome and standing out in its own EP, "True Romance" from My Friend is the latest exemplification of Anjunadeep's recent run of brilliance (see "Clouds" and "I See You In My Dreams").

Enlightened Listening for May 7

It's the first Friday of the month, and that means we're once again moving our weekly new music playlist, Enlightened Listening, to Bandcamp. As with last month's Bandcamp Friday, I've put the playlist on BNDCMPR here to streamline your listening experience. Again, I've opted to keep the releases in alphabetical order by artist name as this incredibly diverse compilation is nearly impossible to mix smoothly.

The nine-release, sixty-nine track (at the moment) compilation opens with a pre-order of A. G. Cook's massive LP. While there are forthcoming remixes from Boys Noize, GRRL and Baauer, it already features the likes of umru, Kai Whiston and DJ Warlord. Following that is the live recording of Austra's solo acoustic performance of HiRUNDiN. Rounding out the first three releases is Boys Noize's Defected follow-up to "Mvinline."

The middle third of this week's Enlightened Listening features a trio of raucous releases, starting with six slappers from Brodinski & Modulaw. Even wilder, Chippy Nonstop and dj genderfluid's self-titled LP gets cheeky with all kinds of rave energy. Headed further hardcore and break-driven, India Jordan's Watch Out! is simply wicked.

Finally, we head into the final three releases with the IDM journey through sound and consciousness that is Little Snake's lengthy titled LP, A Fragmented Love Story, Written By The Infinite Helix Architect. Another release that's likely to leave you doing double-takes is LUXXURY's Edits Vol. 7, which features a couple handfuls of fabulous disco, synthpop edits of classics from The Rolling Stones, Black Box, Alexander Robotnik and more. Finally, our lone freebie, a treat for Diablo II fans in Priori's DnB twist on the "Tristram Theme."

Enlightened Listening for April 30

It's new music Friday, and it seems like the theme this week was LPs. With more than a handful of albums we've been building towards dropping today, only four made the cut for this week's Enlightened Listening, as they go deeper than their singles. Each of Tor, Rochelle Jordan, Moullinex and Cadence Weapon captured the quality of the long-form release, taking listeners on diverse yet equally compelling journeys. Aside from the albums, the playlist opens with a fist full of funky stuff, including remixes from Pat Lok and the dynamic duo Breakbot & Irfane. Two Toronto talents follow that, as Frustra and The Kount hit us in the feels. After Tor's Oasis Sky comes a trio of remixes of Robotaki, each seemingly better than the next. Finally, bookending the last two LPs are two strong singles in the nasty Night Bass garage groover, Badger's "Give It To Me" and Prospa's rapturous "WANT NEED LOVE." Enjoy!
