Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Attlas - Bloom EP

In anticipation of multiple Attlas sets this weekend, today's episode of Bump In The Hump will end with one of the new tracks from Bloom, released this past Friday the 22nd.  "Ryat" (aired on BiTH June 29) is already one of my favourite tracks of the year, and now it seems Bloom has become one of my favourite EPs of the year. Attlas strings together the five tracks utilizing vocals beautifully, exhibiting more maturity in his songwriting, producing an expressive story and perfecting the art of the EP. The constant progression in Attlas' tracks, EPs, and overall production quality, and seemingly endless amounts of creative content (with four EPs and a multitude of remixes), the sky is the limit for the 27 year old.

Listen to Bloom above, buy the it here, and tune into Bump In The Hump live tonight from 6-7 EST on Radio Humber, to find out which Attlas track is this week's #WeekendWarmup in honour of his multiple sets surrounding Veld. He's at UNIUN Friday for the Veld Pre-Party (Tickets) and at Veld Saturday (Tickets).

Medasin - Daydream (ft. Joba)

Dallas based producer, Medasin made this Monday better than we could have expected, dropping the surreal single "Daydream" with vocalist Joba. Pick up your copy free, in full lossless wave format. Fitting that such a beautiful piece of music, specifically one whose subject matter is foggy at best, gets released in a format that leaves no sound left behind. We're able to share in the very same "Daydream" as Medasin. From the first chord of the whirling organ, the track wanders towards an aim that seems entirely unattainable, just like that of a dream. There are always missing pieces in the story of a dream, you cannot accurately describe it; the logic and metaphysics of the real world do not transfer to this illusory life. But this is precisely what makes Medasin's production so perfect. He is able to bridge the gaps in logic as he glides effortlessly from the sorrowful organ to the plucky, uplifting keys, further combining these two disparate aesthetics through propulsive percussion. The picture he paints is so fantastic that it shatters your very concept of this world, making you wonder whether 'real-life' is just that, or some kind of dream-inside-a-dream. Yet just like that the track evaporates, bursting the bubble of beauty, forcing you awake, when all you want is to return to the euphoric state that is his "Daydream." Luckily you can hit the repeat button and once again drown in the depths of this delusion, led by the disembodied voice of Joba, playing the role of Sherpa in this specter.

Tropkillaz, Oski, Dom Dias & Sevla to set The Hoxton ablaze

Since summer has begun, I don't think I've set foot in a club. Don't get me wrong, I've seen dozens of artists, but seemingly exclusively outside, enjoying the unprecedented warmth and lack of rain. That all changes tonight, as I finally find myself hitting up The Hoxton once again. I was immediately intrigued when I saw Tropkillaz were coming to town, and when Oski was added to the billing I knew this was going to be an event I'd do my darnedest to get to. But it was when Dom Dias, truly one of my favourite producers in the game, was announced as the local support that I knew I'd break any previous commitment to take in one of his rare DJ sets. So in honour of tonight's lit lineup, I'm going to take you through a number of my favourite tracks from each of these artists, in an attempt not just to build the hype but to also rebuild part of my now lost library.

First we start with the opener, Sevla, who I've unwittingly been aware of for almost a year. Last summer as Diplo and Sleepy Tom's track "Be Right There" was bouncing through the clubs, Sevla and Maliboux were at work crafting one of seemingly dozens of remixes of the massive collaboration. Their ever so slightly pitched up, frantic future bass, and soaring synths take "Be Right There" to a level unheard even in the six track remix package.
Damian Alves, 19 year old, self-proclaimed "TRVP GOD" is truly a master of fire-starting bootleg remixes taking on the likes of Porter Robinson, Deadmau5, Wiwek, Eptic and Habstrakt. His productions with Blvk Sheep, Crankdat and GRMN suggest that he's ready to explode in a ball of blazing hot fire. Expect his opening set to be jam packed with raucous remixes, cranking up the temperature in preparation for the white hot heat of Tropkillaz, Oski and Dom Dias.

While the majority of tonight's lineup focus on lit, trap productions, Dom Dias stands out as perhaps the most versatile and well rounded producer. He may even have the most productions to his name. I'm having a hard time coming up with an accurate prediction as to what the Sinhalese sensation is going to drop. Following the philosophy of "no genres" I expect Dom to bounce around through his endless library of remixes, stoking the fire of the crowd, filling the room with a hazy humidity, that might just explode in a thunderstorm like the opening of his latest production, a hard hitting remix/mashup of Red Hot Chili Peppers.

After back to back Canadians, The Hoxton will play host to two international act from the Southern Hemisphere. Hailing from Sydney, Aussie producer Oski will undoubtedly capitalize on the firestorm Dom Dias has created. Expect to hear a lot of Oski's productions with his tag, "Oh shit, is that Oski?" and a number of exclusives and unreleased tracks. Personally I'll be holding old for his twisted trap remix of fellow Australian L D R U's "Keeping Score," but if we're lucky we'll get to hear ItsUFO's bootleg of perhaps Oski's most lit track, "Keep It Going." It's still not released but you can hear it in fan fiction's NEST HQ Resident Mix 010.

Our other international headliner is the Brazilian 808 bass duo, Tropkillaz. And now that I take the time to really think about it, there are very few producers on the planet that can boast a larger library, in the same amount of time. I still remember my friend first playing "Deixa Eu Dizer" back in 2013. That was my introduction to Tropkillaz, and although it is one of their lighter tracks, it serves as a terrific taster, whetting your appetite for Tropkillaz unique blend of Brazilian Bass. By the time these two take the stage, I expect The Hoxton to be like a scene out of Jumanji with the roof dripping sweat and all sorts of vines and other jungle growth overtaking the dancefloor. Tropkillaz will look to take advantage of this jungle-esque atmosphere, only increasing the humidity and heat, with their blazing bass. They've got a new EP on Mad Decent, Braza Attack Vol. 1, and seemingly endless amounts of booty shakers, both literal bootlegs and twerk inspired tracks. Get a taste below.
As per usual I went a little bit overboard with the taste tests, you won't be able to listen to everything I've posted and still be at the show in time, but at least you'll have these playlists to listen to afterwards and you'll be able to pick out some of your favourite tracks they actually played. Tickets are still available tonight, and I'm sure you can get some at the door, as there's always some held back for first come, first serve. So check out the facebook event, cop the tickets from there or take your chances showing up at King and Bathurst.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: The Return of Crystal Castles & STFU "Find That Girl"

Despite ongoing frustrations with my computer, which has now been completely wiped thanks to Asus (a company I urge everyone to avoid), the world of music never stops. The beauty of Bump In The Hump and its focus on new music, makes it possible for me to simply pick up where I left off. Since I sent my computer away last week, there's been a seemingly unprecedented onslaught of new music. And as always, I like to give you a little taste of what our great Canadian producers have been brewing, and boy have they been brewing. We're looking at a week capped with MSTRKRFT's new album, Operator, dropping Friday, joining new Pusher, A-Trak, Strider White, Tristam, Blu J, Black Tiger Sex Machine, and yes even more. Part of the proverbial 'more' is two very different tracks, one from established Canadian legends Crystal Castles and the second, from fast rising stars STFU.Ethan Kath, the producer behind Crystal Castles has a new front woman, in Edith Frances, and their first album as a duo, Amnesty (I), is set to be released August 19th. This week you'll hear their latest addition to that album, "Char." Hear it in its entirety, and get lost its dark abyss, on youtube, here.Originally aired on Benzi's ninth installment of his Girl Trapz series, we've now got the full length version of their future bass anthem. Furthering my claim that Zak and Alex are fast rising stars, they've dropped a second track in less than a week, a remix of Leaf's "Money." Expect big things from them as the both the world and the wheels of steel continue to turn.

I've got a number of exclusives on the way into my inbox as I write this, and can safely say that this week's episode of Bump In The Hump is one for the record books. Do not miss out on this absolutely massive hour of entirely new Canadian electronic music, airing live Wednesday from 6-7 on Radio Humber, rebroadcast Friday 11-midnight, and as always streamable on this very blog.

Bump In The Hump Sneak Peek: Triple Play

Starting this week, my friend Kayj has committed to making me teaser promos for each upcoming episode of Bump In The Hump. This week, I've got three tracks lined up for your listening pleasure, ahead of their play Wednesday on Radio Humber. First, Apashe continues his hot streak remixing the monstrous collaboration of Mr. Collipark, Atom Pushers, DJ Wavy and the vocal stylings of Ying Yang Twins, "Booty Bounce Pop."
After playing Holl & Rush's remix of A-Trak and Phantogram's "Parallel Lines" last week, it's Blu J's turn to put their spin on the undeniably awesome track. Finally, I've got an exclusive first play of an absolutely brilliant track, that somehow combines the swirls of San Holo with the kind of deep house that will leave you dancing for days. "Outcry" is only the third release from the elusive and entirely unknown Toronto producer, 404. All this and more on this week's episode of Bump In The Hump on Radio Humber. A Weekend of Beautiful Music

Even though my computer is going through some rough times at the moment, both my trackpad and soundcard have failed in the last two weeks, I always find a way to have music playing. This weekend I found myself down one of the most beautiful Soundcloud wormholes I've ever come across. Du Tonc's "Slow Down" immediately had me reclining my lawn chair as their bass line throbbed underneath evaporating vocals and the kind of cool atmosphere that suits this scorching weather. Featuring the same kind of modulated vocals, and funky bass, the theme both in "Peace" and this wormhole at large, is one of love, unity and beauty. Super styling, Kenton Slash Demon delivers a track that will assuredly have your toes tapping, as you get up to join the group of reveling dancers. Delightfully dreamy yet poignant, "Always Be Motivated By Love" is not just a great tag line for a t-shirt, but a song as beautiful as a world where people live by that very maxim. The fleeting nature of SQRD's "Gold" left me yearning for more of his unique brand of electropop. Immediately taken aback by the latin flavour of "Bossa Lady" it didn't take long for me to make a fool of myself dancing around in my backyard pretending I was some kind of Cassanova. Already a beautiful track in itself, Prins Thomas adds a little extra groove, transporting Roosevelt's original to a bleepy, playful, all night discotheque, surrounded by people vogueing and posing. It feels like we've come full circle, finding another awesomely funky track with a bass line that you cannot help but be struck by. Enter the dance circle with your best moves; by now you've got the "Jist" of what Soundcloud was recommending by sending us down this wormhole. Sit back, relax and be one with the funk.

Foals - Mountain At My Gates (Alex Metric Remix)

Three years ago, the uncontested song of my summer was Alex Metric's soaring and spine-tingling remix of Foals' "Bad Habit." To this day it remains one of my favourite tracks of all time, in large part because of Metric's incomparable treatment of Yannis Philippakis' poignant lyrics and quivering vocals. Metric's productions are always of the highest quality, pieced together to take listeners on a journey through more than just sound, but verily time and space. Now almost three years to the day, Metric has once taken on Foals, this time remixing their 2015 single, "Mountain At My Gates." Once again supporting the genius lyrical content of Foals, Metric's remix rises just as Philippakis describes the titular mountain, jutting up in ominous opposition. Its defiant progression, prevents the track from being nailed down to just one genre or feeling. It depicts a ceaseless struggle, with Philippakis in constant combat, attempting to overcome the growing obstruction, looming in the distance, yet creeping ever closer. With the telling lines "I see a darkness in my fate" and "Show me a signpost for where I should go," it makes one wonder not just whether they can conquer this bump in the road but whether they're on the right path at all.

Recklessly running into a wall, the line "I'll drive my car without the brakes," may be the most poignant of all, showing the faith the track's protagonist holds; time is linear, always moving forward. Metric's production so perfectly harmonizes with this narrative, becoming a celebration. As Foals climb the mountain, leaving it in the distance, the track hits its heavenly plateau, in a dance that seems to be handed down from those same heavens.

My soundcloud app got a workout last night as I had "Mountain At My Gates" on constant repeat, as the mastery of Alex Metric's remix got me home safely from a late night of baseball. You too will have to wear out soundcloud for the time being as no official release date has been set as of yet.

Tobtok - Aber

Genre tagged 'Deep House,' Tobtok's latest track "Aber" features tropically tuned guitars and rhythmic bongos combined to create an awesome atmosphere, absolutely ideal for summer listening. Full of energy, the Swede's track is set to be released Friday July 8th on Perfect Havoc. Not being the biggest fan of either 'deep house' (whatever that means) or tropical, in large part because of the over saturation of mediocre tracks trying to copy Kygo, Matoma and others I've literally wiped from my mind, I was immediately apprehensive. Those kinds of guitar led, warm and wavy tropical tracks so often seem hollow and essentially valueless kitsch. However, what sets Tobtok's "Aber" apart from the hoi polloi is its constant progression, and playfulness. I was absolutely awestruck by the first drop (2ish minutes in), the melody flutters and picks up steam, tying all loose ends, painting an exquisite picture.

I'm all about the humanity in music, which can be difficult in a technology focused form, but it is that contradiction that gives it such vitality. That's why play and the act of playing is so fundamental to my enjoyment of electronic music; a computer does not play it merely executes action. In "Aber," specifically in the drop, Tobtok is able to inject the existential freedom that warms your heart and urges you to spin in this infinity we call life. It is those quick little licks on the guitar, cascading like a waterfall that at once imbue "Aber" with refreshing tropical vibes, as though drinking from the fountain of youth.

I always try to listen to the track I'm writing about on constant repeat, and often I'm left running, trying to end the post as quickly as possible. In this case however, I've been listening to "Aber" for nearly a half hour, and could easily listen another 30. It's composition reminds me of Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon, in that the beginning could easily be the end and vice versa. Having "Aber" on a true loop, not only works but succeeds in showcasing the progression that makes it a five star, must have summer track. You know I'll be streaming it a whole bunch until tomorrow, at which point it will arrive in my iTunes. Join me by pre-ordering your copy, and get in to the swing of summer.

Bump In the Hump Sneak Peek: NUKAGE - Conjunctiva (FUTURE MAGIC Remix)

I've already had the pleasure of premiering a number tracks from fast rising star, Future Magic, and this week I've got an exclusive first play of his remix of NUKAGE's "Conjunctiva." It's so exclusive that it's still not even publicly available, so you'll have to settle for the original stream, at least until 6-7 tonight when it gets its world premiere on Bump In The Hump, Radio Humber. You can expect Future Magic's remix to maintain the original's power, while transforming it into a hybrid dubstep, drum and bass, glitch workout. His hardest and heaviest track to date, Future Magic said he "wanted to make a track that'd be hella fun live, not overly complex or anything, just fat and dirty." There's no question he accomplished this feat.

Hear it for the first time tonight, alongside a new collab between Kayliox and 1DAFUL, a new freebie from Dr. Ozi, and another track from Paul David's Fresh EP; all that and more tonight on Bump In The Hump on 96.9 FM Radio Humber.
